Documentary on TG4 tonight (9:25pm) about privatisation

category international | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday July 02, 2003 12:42author by Caoimhín Ó Maolallaigh - Green Partyauthor email macmhairtinlally at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Privatising the World: Water, seeds, genes, healthcare - very few things today are not to be considered saleable commodities. 'The Bottom Line' investigates the privatisation of the world and invites us to reflect on the 'common good' notion which is threatened by the decreasing role of the state and the prevailing trend to patent everything that obviously seemed to belong to society for generations.

An Domhan ar Díol: Uisce, síolta, géinte agus cúram sláinte - is beag rud nach féidir a dhíol sa lá atá inniu ann. Déanann an clár seo cíoradh ar phríobháidiú an domhain agus tarraingíonn ár n-aird ar an meon 'leas na ndaoine', meon atá i mbaol anois mar gheall ar ról an Stáit i saol na linne a bheith ag laghdú agus an claonadh a bhíonn ann paitinn a fháil ar gach rud, fiú rudaí a ceapadh riamh anall go mba leis an bpobal i gcoitinne iad. The narration is in Irish with English subtitles on screen. The majority of the speakers in the program will be speaking English. Any other languages spoken will have English subtitles on screen.

Má as Gaeilge atá sé is cinnte go mbeidh fotheidil(?) ar fáil.
If it is in Irish it´s more than likely that it will have subtitles.

Ní thuigim cén fáth go bhfuil an Ghaeilge a cháineadh agat.
I don´t understand your antipathy towards the Irish language.

Ó thaobh náisiúnachas de?
Because of Nationalism?

Is í Gaeilge mo theanga dhúchais ach ní sin an t-aon teanga atá ar mo thoil agam.
Irish is my mother tongue but its not my only language.

Béarla dár ndóigh, agus an Spáinnis agus mé anseo i dTír na mBascach tá cúpla focail Bascais a bhfoghlaim agam.
I speak english of course, and Spanish and while I´m here in Euskal Herria (http://euskalherria.indymedia.org) I´m learning a few words of Euskera.

Mar sin féin, ní chiallaíonn úsáid teanga mionlach i gcónaí, dearcadh polaitiúil áirithe.
The point is that using and supporting a minority language does not necessarily confer political allegiance to any one political asperation.

Ba chóir meas a thabhairt don cheart úsáide teanga dhúchais.
The right to use ones own language should be respected.

Ní chóir chomh maith dímheas a léiriú dóibh siúd nach raibh an seans céanna acu Gaeilge a fhoghlaim sa scoil(go h-áirithe nuair a ghlacann muid leis an leibheál uafásach íseal na múinteoireachta sna 26 chontae go ginearálta).
Disrespect should not be shown to those who haven´t been given the opportunity to learn Irish through school(especially considering generally terrible teaching of Irish in the 26 counties).

Má tá tú i gcoinne dearcadh daoine áirithe leis an Ghaeilge, déanfaidh muid díospóireacht ach na cáin teanga de bharr dearcadh difriúla le roinnt daoine a úsáideann an teanga.
If your against the opinions certain people that speak Irish, we can discuss it but please don´t put down a whole because of your difference of opinion with some people who use it.
