The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Globalise Resistance activist meeting..tomorrow (wednesday)night 7.30pm Upstairs Conways Pub, Parnell st. to be discussed...structure of gr, upcoming anti-war protests, september WTO actions, October WEF events QUICK REPORT The Evian feedback meeting was very successful and people talked about the inpirational events in Geneva (for an eye-witness report check out our website at freewebs.com/globalise ). People also talked about the need to bring the anti-captialist movement to Ireland and how we can link in the struggles against neo-liberalism in Ireland with the international movement. Then there was the press barons ball protests last monday which highlighted the corporate takeover of the media. We want to continue building the movement here in Ireland and make globalise resistance the lively activist centre of anti-capitalist protests and counter-information in Ireland....bring seattle to dublin..O2O! see you wed night, rory

Any chance you could bring seattle to shannon on saturday? Hope to see you all there at 2pm in the town centre! would be a good focus for gr for the future, don't ya think?

I understand Globalise Resistance are against neo-liberalism etc, and are also linked with SWP politics (this has never "been hidden from public knowledge" as many seem to think). But I have to go against the use of the persistant use of Anti this and that without the alternative being offered.
Rory, what is the alternitive that GR and SWP propose? Obviously, a socialist state is the all encompassing word, but what does that entail? In what way does it progress from the past socialist (mis)adventures and in what way might it improve our present system? In what way does the position of GR and SWP move from the anti stance to the pro, where a tangible alternative is being offered to people?
And please, for those of you who have a habit of simply coming to IMC to offer sectarian comments and persist in your own created rivalries, go to another news article.
ps. my political affiliation is non-existant, only that i share many of the sentiments of most of the groups that use this site. Yes, we do exist.

I know others have said it slagging GR off before but using O20 does unfortunatley look very similar to the phone logo. what is the significance though of using the abreviated form? is there something more to it, because as far as I can make out it merely uses the discourse of the corporation.
just a passing comment

I think GR dont exactly have a 'pro' alternative at the moment. Yes, GR and SWP have a connection with its members and... share the same office... but however, GR is trying to break away from the title of a cover for SWP. The sooner they break away from that title, the better.

Deireadh Fomhair is a name being given to the name of the entire range of actions happening in October.

Check out the site for the reasons behind this.

Fair enough. but who, when, structure, who's behind it. A site is announced. a list set up and name given to the protests. A mailing list with 27 people. (i'm interested enough to subscribe)

Not slagging, not suggesting people put all their details on the net. But some level of transparency wouldn't go a miss surely? or maybe i'm just paranoid.

on the use of O20 , most of these anti-capitalist/globalisation/corporate (call them what you will) demos are simply know by the abbreviated form of the days they take place.

But I think the O20 is quite clever.

Read the GR, they have a section titled Anti Capitalist FAQ. The writer of this section pretends to be an anarchist! They are so unpopular they now pretend to be us! How sad is that Rory?

is obviously lifted from another site. (There's an anti-copyright notice at the end))

C'mon 'genuine anarchists' get real. The GR site lacks any mention of anarchism. Why would they want to be associated with an ideology they disagree with.
You're the sad one(s). Post something worth debating.

author by Raypublication date Wed Jun 18, 2003 17:48author address author phone Report this post to the editors

There's a page in there (resources? about anticapitalism? something like that) that contains an article by some British SWP people, an FAQ, a Chomsky bit, and some other bits and pieces. The FAQ was written by an anarchist. But its not that someone from GR is pretending to be an anarchist, but that that page is made up of stuff lifted from other sites.

"reload anticapitalism"

"O20"

"the press barons ball "

"People also talked about the need to bring the anti-captialist movement to Ireland" vs "We want to continue building the movement here in Ireland" (Well-which is it?)

"....bring seattle to dublin.."

Ever thought of writing for the Sun or some other prol-fodder paper? your writing style suits it. baseless sensationalism. who's your page 3? a topless stalin?

Why are there no links to anarchist groups in
the "Activist Websites" section? It seems a
bit strange that it lists marxist parties but
not anarchist groups, if it really is a board
organisation...

There didn't seem to be much happening as far as a way for people from other countries coming to Ireland for the WEF to see what's going on was concerned. So someone set up the website just to link all the stuff that's going on together, nothing sinister : )
