The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Dublin City Council to Debate War

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 03, 2003 17:36author by Justin Moran - Sinn Feinauthor email maigh_nuad at yahoo dot com Report this post to the editors

Dublin City Council will tonight debate a motion put by the Sinn Féin Group condemning the proposed war on Iraq. Last week, Derry City Council approved a similar motion also put by the Sinn Féin Group there joining Galway in the number of cities opposed to war. I know of no protest planned for the outside.

Sinn Féin to put Anti-War Motion to Dublin City Council.

Sinn Féin has called for cross-party support to facilitate the debate of a motion the Sinn Féin Group intends putting to the Council tonight calling for a halt to the drive towards war on the Iraqi people.

Cllr Larry O’Toole said: “Last week Sinn Féin in Derry were successful in passing a motion condemning the war at City Council, joining Galway to become the second city in Ireland to come out against the war. That motion was passed with the support of the SDLP and we hope that tonight all parties can put aside their political differences and vote for peace.

“It is my hope that tonight Dublin will be added to the growing list of cities, including 57 American cities like Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco, that oppose the war. I have put down an emergency motion and I would ask for cross-party support to facilitate the debate of the motion and for this support to also extend to passing it in order to send a message that the people of Dublin are absolutely opposed to this war.

The motion reads:

‘That this Council supports the anti-war rally called for the 15th of February and calls for a stop to the drive towards war on the Iraqi people.’

Yes the crowd of hypocrites who condemned 'violence' for 20 odd years are strangly quiet. Where is their condemnation of the USA? Their silence is deafening, I remmember when they used to come out every second day criticising the provos.

I suppose davey Trimble and Paisley and all the other characters will be consistent and call for British and yankee decommissioning of weapons?
