An Broc Bocht!![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Is cosúil go mbeidh broic na tíre faoi ionsaí fíochmhar roimh i bhfad. Tá sé deamhnaithe ag an Roinn Talmhaíochta go bhfuil slad tuillte ag na broic toisc go bhfuil eitinn á scaipeadh acu i measc béithigh feirme. Tá pleananna réitithe ag an Roinn 75 duine a fhostú i gCo. Muineacháin leis na broic a mharú ins sa chuid sin tíre ina bhfuil an méid is mó eitinn le fáil i measc na mbó. Níorbh é seo an chéad uair ar chuireadh an locht ar na broic as eitinn a scaipeadh agus maraíodh na mílte acu thar na blianta. Ar ndóigh, tuigtear go maraítear broic go minic ar na bóithre agus tá mé den bharúil go ndéantar a leithéid d'aonturas ag roinnt feirmeoirí. De réir saineolaithe na Roinne, ní bhíonn an oiread sin eitinn le fáil in áiteanna ina maraítear na broic. Mar aon leis sin, creideann siad go bhfuil an eitinn ag méadú i measc na mbroc. Rinneadh taighde ar uimhir áirithe broic agus tugadh faoi deara go raibh eitinn ag 21.2% acu.-- Is docha go gcaillíonn sé sin gur cheart iad uilig a mharú! Tá mé go mór in amhras an bhfuil go leor déanta ag an Roinn Talmhaíochta ar mhaithe le slánú na mbroc. B'fhearr i bhfad leo na broic a mharú ná dóigheanna a aimsiú l'iad a leigheas. Is dócha go bhfuil socrú is leisciúla roghnaithe acu. Deir an Roinn go bhfuil sé ar intinn acu suirbhé náisiúnta a dhéanamh l'áiteanna cónaí na mbroc a aimsiú agus go ndéanfaidh siad scrúdaithe maidir le leigheasanna a thriail. Le fírinne, cé go bhfuil an méid seo ráite acu, is dócha go mbeidh níos mó fuinnimh curtha ins sa fheachtas le broic a mharú. Má tá 75 duine fostaithe ag an rialtas le broic a mharú i gceantar amháin, nach mbeidh siad ag iarraidh conraithe measartha buan a chruthú dóibh féin. Ní chuirfidh an 75 seo fáilte roimh leigheas ar bith. Lena chois sin, cén cineál teachtaireachta atá á chur ós comhair an phobail? Gach seans go mbeidh scaiftí de mharfóirí ag dul amach le broic a scrios agus go mbeidh feirmeoirí le cogadh a thoiseacht ar na broic bochta ar fud na hÉireann. B'fhéidir go bhfuil sé in am don Roinn Talmhaíochta dóigheanna eile feirmeoireachta a chothú chomh maith. Cad chuige a bhfuil feirmeoirí ag brath an oiread sin ar na ba cibé ar bith? Nár smaoin siad riamh go raibh i bhfad barraíocht béithigh feirme sa tír agus nach bhfuil sé thar am do fheirmeoirí níos mó barrthaí agus eile a sholáthar? Is cinnte nach bhfuil meas madaidh ar an bhroc bhocht a thuilleadh. Bhí ardmheas ag ár sinsear ar an ainmhí seo agus chreideadh go raibh sé i gcumas an bhroic féar bainte a shábhailt ón fhearthainn thar oíche. Ní fios go cruinn cad é mar a d'éirigh le broc a leithéid a dhéanamh óir d'oibrigh sé go rúnda sa dorchadas. Bhí cleas iontach ag an bhroc fosta agus é ag iarraidh taisteal go gasta. Chuireadh sé a shrón faoina ruball sa dóigh is go mbíodh liathróid déanta aige dá chorp agus bhíodh sé ag roithleageadh síos cnoic is sléibhte. --- Seans go mbeidh ar na broic pilleadh ar na seanchleas seo l'éalú ón Roinn Talmhaíochta! Seanfhocal na Seachtaine 'Ní léir do dhuine a locht féin.' Molaim gur chóir don Roinn Talmhaíochta an seanfhocal thuasluaite a mheas sula dtosaíonn siad ar slad na mbroc. |

Basically, the Department of Agriculture are going to be killing badgers (broc) because they are spreading TB (eitinn) among the cattle herd. They're going to employ 75 people in Monaghan, which is where the biggest problem with TB is. This isn't the first time that they've been blamed for spreading TB and thousands have been killed over the years, not to mention those killed on the road and deliberately by farmers. Apparently the Ag experts say that there isn't much of a TB problem where badgers are killed, so they believe that it's spreading through them. Their research shows 21.2% of the badgers studied have TB - "I suppose this means that you should kill them all", says the author, who also wonders why the Department don't try and cure the disease rather than killing the animals. The Dept. are also intending to conduct a national survey and will try the use of medicines. The author also suggests the 75 employed to kill the badgers in Monaghan won't welcome the use of a treatment approach.
Other points at the end of the article: why are the farmers depending on cattle? There is obviously no respect for badgers any longer ("meas madaidh" - cool Gaeilge-cliché, one of the best) - our ancestors believed that they could save hay from overnight rain (good old Irish tradition…it's all about the rain), The author also tells a story about how a badger could make itself into a ball and roll down hills (by tucking its nose under its tail..) "They might need to return to this old trick to escape from
..from the Department of Agriculture!"
coz my irish doesn´t stretch to commenting that badger TB has been a petrie dish source of chemical weapon research.
& without a translation I couldn´t have brought myself to write a such a comment in bearla.

Armed badgers occupy and settle the land of Starbucks, 'If Israel can, we can'
NEWS RELEASE - 31st October 2002
Armed Badgers Storm Oxford Street Starbucks in Central London to Build
Illegal Settlement - "If Israel can, we can"
On Thursday 31st October at 3.00pm, 30 badgers armed with waterpistols
stormed the Starbucks on Oxford St claiming it as their ancestral home.
Using the logic of Israeli settlers[1] the badgers evicted some of the
customers and erected the first badger settlement in London.
With placards proclaiming "If it works in Palestine why not here" and "It's
ours because we say so" the self-styled Badger Defence Force set up
checkpoints to inspect shoppers and tourists for concealed weapons. "If
they're not a badger, they could be a terrorist" a spokesbadger said. They
handed out copies of the badger bible which proves their ownership of
Starbucks and a fact sheet which answered Frequently Asked Questions about
their activities (see documents attached together with 8 photos).
The badgers have selected the store for their settlement because of the role
of its CEO as a major supporter of the Israeli state. The company has become
a prime target of an international boycott of companies with ties to
Israel[2].
A spokesbadger said "Since the chief executive of this company clearly
believes it is ok for one group of people to grab land belonging to another
and say they have a right to it, we believe they won't mind if we take some
of theirs".

Notes for the Editor:
[1] The number of Israeli settlers in the West Bank and Gaza is now almost 400,000 in 308 illegal settlements
. These settlements are illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention and UN resolutions.
[2] This action forms part of a growing international campaign, styled on the anti-apartheid movement of the 70s and 80s, to end the illegal occupation by Israel of Palestinian territories. This has included the disruption of Israeli cultural and sporting events in the UK as well as non-violent actions in Israel and Palestine. Many participants in this action have travelled to Palestine as part of the International Solidarity Movement to act as human shields for Palestinians. In April this year, 6 of its members were shot by the Israeli Defence Force and some of its members entered the Church of the Nativity during the Israeli siege. The group is committed to non-violence.
