A climate activist told his pregnant wife she can't have gas and air during labour because of the impact on the environment. Is this what the activists hope the eco-utopian future will hold? wonders Sallust.

Brisbane G20 - Ciaron O'Reilly prohibited then arrested speaking out for Assange, Manning, Snowden

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Sunday November 16, 2014 22:43author by WISE Up Wales Report this post to the editors

G20 resistance all but evaporates in Brisbane heatwave

Policing for the G20 summit in Brisbane this past weekend was of overkill proportions. There was very little in the way of serious resistance, the Guardian reported that cops (6,000) outnumbered protesters and only 14 arrests were made. One of these was Irish-Australian Manning and Assange solidarity and anti-war activist Ciaron O'Reilly, who has been held in custody all weekend and will be brought before Brisbane Magistrates on Monday morning.

A 'Prohibited Person'

After being served with a 'Prohibited Person Notice' by the police earlier in the week

possibly for promising to confront President Obama over his persecution of Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning

Ciaron O'Reilly was back with his placard in the 'exclusion zone' around the Brisbane G20 summit Saturday and was arrested.

As he was being surrounded and pushed back by police, Ciaron referred to how wars are fought on lies and said that "if we began telling the truth, maybe we could stop war."

Ciaron climbed up above dozens of police officers to shout "Free Julian Assange! Free Chelsea Manning! Free Edward Snowden!" (Free Speech!) before being bundled into the van.

Held over the weekend, in court Monday 17 November

Ciaron is due to appear in court on Monday morning, presumably on a charge connected with breaching the prohibited person notice issued under the G20 (Safety and Security) Act 2013.

When your civil liberties are curtailed by such legislation, do you roll over and submit or do you stand up and resist? There were over 1,000 arrests at the 2010 G20 in Toronto; in preparation for Brisbane 2014 the Queensland courts had arranged for day and night court hearings over the weekend complete with livestream. However, with just 14 arrests in total, it seems most folk rolled over or simply stayed away from the G20 this time.

All the more important, then, to support those few now facing the courts for resisting the removal of basic freedoms.

Ciaron O'Reilly was arrested while speaking out for three people persecuted for speaking out for all of us: Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden. Free them all!

Some of us in Ireland well remember Ciaron's interesting and deeply felt contributions to Irish activity and public awareness raising. Clearly the Aussie police were over reacting to his vocal and visual presence on the streets of Brisbane. Good luck Ciaron and hoping you get out into the sunshine soon. We need thousands like you everywhere.

Ciaron hope you are well. Thanks for speaking out for us all at the G20.
A demonised Putin who gave sanctuary to snowden might have been listening
but I doubt the rest of them were.

Obama was spewing his usual cold war Orwellian language lies and nonsense
All they seem to care about is getting this TTIP passed more quickly
and killing off any remaining pockets of resistance to the US system
of perpetual war, free market fascism for the ordinary people
and corporate and financial socialism for the rich.

Hope we see you again here soon. Irish are finally showing signs of waking up a little.
After years of frustration trying to wake them up, you of all people might
appreciate it!

Brisbane is probably one of the more conservative Australian cities and the police aren't particularly fond of the Irish or anybody of Irish extraction at the best of times. It's definitely more of a 'Pommie' friendly part of Oz. More proof that the police forces of various countries are essentially in the employ of the elites.
