Disabling The Propaganda Machine – Independent Media as a Force For Revolution

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday May 15, 2014 12:18author by Deborah - Vegan Information Project Report this post to the editors

Short talk and workshop on how activists can create their own media to challenge the status quo

Workshop to explore independent media as a tool for revolutionary change, threatening a system built on alienation and lies. at the Outhouse, 105 Capel Street, Dublin, Wed 21st May 7-9pm

This workshop will explore the potential of independent media as a tool for revolutionary change, and a threat to a system built entirely on alienation and lies which is created by activists' fearless and committed telling of the truth.

the event will be divided into two parts :

1) a ten minute talk on the concept of 'invisible people', how their invisibility is created and maintained by mass media, and the feminist and anarchist traditions of creative rejection of an rebellion against this. to be followed by a short q&a session.

2) a discussion and workshop. we will examine the ways in which independent media has been used by counter cultures, with particular reference to the radical feminist ‘riot grrrl’ movement and their attack on corporate media's objectification of women. we will explore the practicalities of the many forms of independent media, from zine making and distribution, to activist guerilla documentaries and pirate radio. we will also make space for thinking critically about the use of mainstream media by social justice movements .

thanx once again from the facilitator to everyone who attended the last session - it was a privilege to be part of such a passionate dialogue in a revolutionary atmosphere. hope to see you all again this time!
