The petty-bourgeois “left” promotes the CIA war in Syria

category international | anti-war / imperialism | other press author Saturday April 13, 2013 11:10author by fred Report this post to the editors

For those of you following events in Syria, WSWS has an interesting analysis of how the "petty bourgeois" left has given it's support to a CIA backed coup by right wing religious fundamentalists in Syria. Worth a read.

Quote:
The ISO’s fantasy that Syrians are now experimenting with radical forms of self-government under the jackboot of ultra-right, sectarian Islamist militias armed by the CIA is ludicrous. Syrian workers in opposition-controlled areas are either simply trying to survive as Islamist guerrillas loot their workplaces, schools, and homes, or are actively protesting the opposition’s thuggery.

A series of interviews in the Guardian with opposition militia forces in Aleppo last December laid out the basic character of the Islamist militias, which plunder the population for cash to buy CIA weapons. One militia commander said, “I liberate an area, I need resources and ammunition, so I start looting government properties. When this is finished, I turn to looting other properties and I become a thief.”

Another opposition official noted the death of an opposition fighter, Abu Jameel, in a fight with other militias over how to divide the loot from the seizure of a steel warehouse. He said, “To be killed because of a feud over loot is a disaster for the revolution. It is extremely sad. There is not one government institution or warehouse left standing in Aleppo. Everything has been looted. Everything is gone.”

Given Aleppo’s role as the center of Syria’s state-run pharmaceutical industry, the opposition’s raids on factories and other state facilities have had a devastating impact. Critical medicines are running out, notably diabetes medications and antibiotics. State flights carrying vaccines into Syria have been shot at, and chlorine for water purification is banned for import by the imperialist powers under the pretext that Assad could use it to create chemical weapons—resulting in a spread of water-borne diseases.

Abdul-Jabbar Akidi, a former Syrian army colonel and a leading official in the opposition’s military council in Aleppo, confessed that there is deep popular hostility in Aleppo to his forces: “Even the people are fed up with us. We were liberators, but now they denounce us and demonstrate against us.”

Another Quote:
"The ISO’s presentation of CIA-backed Islamic fundamentalists as defenders of women’s rights is absurd and repugnant. Should Al Qaeda-type forces conquer Syria with US and Saudi help, Syrian women—who largely lived in modern conditions under the secular Assad regime—will be forced to live under conditions like those faced by women under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan or in Saudi Arabia. There, women are considered legal minors and are denied basic rights, including the right to drive a car.

As it turns out, the Aleppo women activists the ISO cynically held up as examples of the opposition’s supposedly progressive character have not fared well. “In early March, the revolutionary local council in Aleppo was elected and didn’t include a single woman, despite some well-known female activists being nominated,” the ISO writes, complacently adding: “So there is—like everywhere in the world—some distance to go before women have equality in Syria.”

Yes, it incredible how these petty bourgeois leftists find themselves on the same side as Nato so often. After all, Francois Hollande leads a so called socialist party, and has joined in the New Scramble for Africa with just as much gusto as the war criminal Sarkozi. Libya today is in a state of utter chaos, where racist gangs rule the people without challenge, and the USA controls the oil and water. And this Holocaust was cheer led by these petty bourgeois lefties - not least by the so called Irish Anti-War Movement and their CIA chum Madhi al-Harati. It seems that keeping up the standard of living of their voters - even by imperialist mass murder and plunder - and thus keeping up their share of the vote, is enough for them.

excellent post on Syria situation on WSWS.

It seems that the AlQaeda terrorists are on the back foot so the US is resorting to using the "WMD" excuse to intervene before their proxy jihadists lose too much ground in the war against the Assad government.

This is a very worrying development.

The Irish times had a front page article selling this propaganda to the Irish people and this was highlighted without balance on Vincent Browne. So expect your friends to have already swallowed this propaganda lie and be already regurgitating it by the time you read this. Same goes for the neo liberal P.ie echo chamber

Meanwhile RTE spends several minutes on tonights news talking about baling the grass in shannon airport. as if there was nothing else newsworthy. We are truly living in the matrix!!

"WSWS has an interesting analysis of how the "petty bourgeois" left has given it's support to a CIA backed coup by right wing religious fundamentalists in Syria. Worth a read."

perhaps they could also do an "analysis" of how the WSWS helped demonise Libya's Ghaddafi Gov't before , during and after the NATO sponsored Mercenary attack on that country.

WSWS articles were in plentiful supply at the time, attacking Ghaddafi's Gov't incessantly. The end effect of this was of course to help legitimise the NATO-sponsored forces actions.

Sure they will deny it, but for anyone watching at the time it was clear the effect the WSWS articles were having amongst the left.

When people here pointed out how WSWS's anti-Ghaddafi propaganda was helping to legitimise the NATO-Mercenary attack on the Libyan people we were of course, as usual, censored unmercifully.

All of a sudden the WSWS is now acting as if it's own role in helping to spread Anti-Ghaddafi propaganda never occurred.

Yes I agree, many left leaning people were taken in by the rather romantic notion of an "arab spring" where the poor workers threw off the shackles of their oppressors.

However the reality was much different as salafist jihadists were funded and used by the US and their allies to destabilise and destroy a soverign nation, ( not to mention the carpet bombing! )

Yes many on the left were taken in by the propaganda blanket coming from the likes of al jazeera. Including many in Ireland. And I agree, they need to admit this and analyse how and why it happened and resolve not to let it happen again.

But at least now they are back on track regarding Syria, where the same kind of tactics are being applied again by imperialists.

And the linked article IS worth a read! ;-)

Rather than just pointing fingers, we need more people onboard against this tyranny. I'm glad writers at WSWS have realised how they were taken in. But then a lot of people were.

NED, Gene sharp and his stealthy tactics for yellow pack country destabilisation, postmodern coups etc fooled a lot of people indeed:
http://www.indymedia.ie/article/102162

Hopefully people on the left are wiser to such tactics now.

Another nasty tactic is in the works in Syria according to this counterpunch article:

http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/04/26/pushing-al-qaeda...llah/

The rebels may be somewhat on the back foot, but imperialists and their allies are still making the best of it. Its a win win scenario for them.

The tactic seems to be to encourage Hizbollah to fight with Al Nusra (Al Qaeda), fuel the fire with money and weapons, then encourage all the radicalised muslims, foreign and domestic, to engage in jihad and fight among themselves in a big holy war sectarian fuckfest in Syria, no doubt leading to the complete destruction of Syria and it's infrastructure, then mop up the ones still standing. Very cynical.

"Senator Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), McCain’s neocon Islamaphobe acolyte, goes a bit further and explains to Fox News, once Assad falls and Hezbollah is out of the picture “We can deal with these (jihadist) fellas.” "

It appears a similar sectarian wave is "quietly" taking place in Iraq at present too.

"The tactic seems to be to encourage Hizbollah to fight with Al Nusra (Al Qaeda),"

Wrong way around

The tactic seems to be to encourage NATO-proxy Al Nusra (Al Qaeda) to fight with Hez'b'allah.

Hez'b'allah have never really got involved in any one else's struggles. They have quite sensibly kept their fighting for when they themselves, or Lebanon direct, have been attacked.

In fact Hez'b'allah have never even attacked the Zio-Nazis unless the Zio-Nazis attacked them first or started wandering around in what is to all intents and purposes (rightfully) Hez'b'allah territory.

It's very important to remember that, especially if the NATO-AlQeada Mercenaries start launching attacks on Hez'b'allah.

Because you can be sure that the MSM won't make any mention of THAT if fighting breaks out between those two groups.

As far as the WSWS are concerned : Well, they can just go fuck themselves, the treacherous bastards.

They lied about Ghaddafi at each and every opportunity.

They have used up all their credibility as far as I'm concerned. They have none left. Washed-up Imperialist-stooges, does not matter if that was not their intent (though it is hard to see how they could NOT have seen that at the time) because that is how it played out in the end.

"Useful Idiots" as Stalin (or someone like that) used to say.

It's too much late now to try and claw back any of that lost credibility, imo.

They ARE the "Bourgeois Left" as far as I can see. They ARE what they are railing against.

For some time now, the predominant narrative about Syria has been that the unrest has been fueled in order to weaken Iran. This prevalent account is common to neoconservatives and liberals alike.

While the New York Times trumpeted Israeli-firsters Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham message that “rebel fighters deserved to be armed and that helping them take on the Syrian government would aid Washington’s effort to weaken Iran,” moderate and independent outlets such as Truthout, Counterpunch, and numerous others reported this same objective, except for that it decried the plan. Even Iran’s state-run media shares this account.

This is sheer misdirection - deliberate or otherwise.

Undisputedly, Syria and Iran have been staunch allies since the Iranian Revolution in their joint cause to protect the Palestinian rights and to stand up to Israel and America; and any change in Syria may adversely affect Iran (as it would Russia). But this is a secondary consideration. The generally accepted narrative takes the focus away from the primary reason for the current assault on Syria - Israel.

Since the 1948 war, Syria and Israel have been in a state of war (with brief periods of unsuccessful negotiations). The conflict has been primarily over land and water. Since the 1950s, the conflict over water (and land) has been at the root of the hostilities between the two. In the 1950s, Eisenhower commissioned Eric Johnston to generate a regional water allocation agreement. The failure of the Johnston plan exacerbated the conflict. The published diaries of Israeli Foreign Minister Sharett help understand why the Johnston negotiations were unsuccessful. Sharett maintained, “[P]olitical decisions concerning the occupation of the rest of Eretz Israel were taken as early as 1954, although implemented in 1967.”

The 1967 occupation of Syria’s Golan (Golan Heights) and the Upper Mount Hermon by Israel enabled Israel to seize the entire Upper Jordan River, giving the Israeli regime the advantage of placing its riparian position to fully upstream. Consequently, not only was Syria denied access to Upper Jordan waters, but its territorial and national integrity were assaulted.

Some years later, Haaretz would reveal the existence of a study (Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, Tel-Aviv university) under General Aaron Yariv, a former intelligence services chief, which outlined a “zone of hydraulic security,” which called for placing water resources in Syria and Lebanon under full Israeli control. Disputes continued unabated and the status quo maintained until 1982 when the military prowess of both sides were tested.

A 1987 book by Col. Emmanuel Wald of the Israeli General Staff entitled “The Ruse of the Broken Vessels: The Twilight of Israeli Military Might (1967-1982)” reveals the aims of the 1982 invasion of Lebanon and the month of pre-planning that had gone into it. Wald writes that Ariel Sharon’s master plan codenamed “Oranim” was to defeat the Syrian troops deployed in the Bekaa Valley all the way to the district of Baalbek in North of Lebanon. According to Wald, “during the first days, it was quietly approved by the U.S.”

With this aim, on June 6, 1982, Israel advanced into Lebanon. However, the Syrian army halted the Israeli army advance in the battle of Sultan Yakub and the battle of Ain Zahalta. Sharon’s plan to conquer all of Lebanon and destroy Syria as a military power was thwarted. In reviewing the book and the battles, the famous scholar and activist, Israel Shahak, opined that “the principal purpose of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon was destruction of the Syrian Army.”

Shahak posits that Israel needs to win its wars quickly or not at all. In spite of purported technological and nuclear superiority, another assault on Syria would not predictably bring an easy win to Israel and defenses could ‘drag out a war endlessly.’ He further argues that during the entire history of the Israeli regime, Israeli Jews have shown themselves to be highly sensitive to their losses, and high losses make Israelis “susceptible to political arguments against modes of domination and oppression which they otherwise would accept.”

Shahak’s analysis shed a light on the events that pursued the failure of “Oranim” as outlined in “The Syria Imperative.” Israel continues to pursue its grand strategy, using a different tactic given its awareness of, and its familiarity with the strengths of the Syrian army - an army which must be disrupted from within given Israel’s 1982 failure to do so. And this is the primary reason for arming terrorists posing as “opposition.”

It is not without irony that Netanyahu has recently admitted that he does not rule out arming Syrian rebels, given Israel’s age-old tactic of arming minorities or rebels and cultivating dissent and chaos (such as the Anya Nya in Sudan, later the Sudanese People Liberation Army (SPLA), and the leader of the Sudanese rebels, John Garang, armed by Israel from neighboring countries). This is a scenario being repeated in Syria.

Paradoxically, the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]GCC), which is today on a mission to secure Israel’s vision (with a nod from Washington) by arming rebels and undermining Syria, were all in favor of securing Syria in 2003 when they told Washington, "We think the threat to Syria should stop. We don't think Syria wants a war or to escalate any situation. We reject any infringement of Syria's security.” There is no end to their duplicity.

Amos Yadlin, the outgoing military intelligence chief, warned the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in November 2010 that Israel's next war would take longer and be fought on more fronts.

Yaldin warned that Syria, in particular, posed a greater military obstacle to Israel than at any time in the past three decades. It would appear that the unrest in Syria has allayed his concerns. The Syrian forces that put up such a resistance in 1982, are now engaged in fighting terrorists, while the world is being told that they are the violators. Perhaps Netanyahu’s plan will succeed where Sharon’s Oranim failed.

Regardless, it is important to change the accepted narrative about the unrest in Syria. Given the decades-long demonization of Iran, it may be more palatable to associate the fueling of unrest in Syria to a ‘weaker’ Iran, but let there be no mistake - Syria today is in turmoil in order to promote Israel’s grand strategy - even as the perpetrator - Israel, plays the victim and warns of chemical weapons use by Assad’s regime, demanding intervention.

The so-called 'Institute for the Study of War' is a neocon/Pro-Zio-Nazi organisation, headed by Israeli-Firster Kim Kagan, under the auspices of the neocon Hoover Institution.

What to do?

The "Institute for the Study of War" (http://www.hoover.org/related-materials/144816) Kimberly Kagan, has a plan -- "The Smart and Right Thing in Syria."

The United States must embrace the Syrian opposition fully in order to strengthen its moderate elements, convert the networks of opposition groups into a functioning hierarchy that can govern the country, and ensure that a moderate, representative state friendly to the United States emerges in the wake of Assad.

Another Israeli-Firster, Ari Ratner, also quoted in the article along with the ISW's Elizabeth O'Bagy, is described as 'a former Middle East adviser in the Obama State Dept' (whatever that term 'adviser' means: Presumbly not a career FSO?)

Looks to me like the Israel-firsters have decided to try to have Washington repeat inside Syria the policy it pursued so successfully throughout the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s: To use Washington's power to tip the balance in such a way as to keep the war going as long as possible, with neither side winning but with the host population suffering unbelievable losses... and Israel & its many friends in the U.S. laughing all the time.

Thats still pretty much akin to what I (and the article) was saying. Divide and conquer is being applied in Syria.

And Washington's interests generally dovetail into those of Israel, since their hand is up Washington's ass. Israel are certainly up to their necks in orchestrating this process in Syria.

I also agree the process of sectarian division is being implemented in practice by Al Nusra being encouraged to threaten/attack Hisbollah rather than the other way around. I thought that was a given but no harm emphasising this. My wording was unfortunate. End result is they both fight and this does the work of imperialism.

Thanks for providing some interesting background.

The wsws doesn’t lionize Gaddafi as some on the left do ; but when and how has Gaddafi been “demonized” by the site? I’d like to see some quotes . The wsws archives show that the last articles critical of the Libyan regime on wsws appeared in the early part of 2011, before the NATO no-fly zone was created . . All the wsws articles since March 2011 on Libya have been explicitly in defence of its national sovereignty and explicitly opposed to the US and its proxy forces' intervention .

Bill van Auken did write an article that was critical of Gaddafi’s past relations with Washington on 27 August 2011 titled “WikiLeaks cables expose Washington’s close ties to Gaddafi”. Robert Stevens wrote an article on 29 October 2011 titled "Documents reveal how UK backed Gaddafi’s repression"
But these two critical articles hardly constitute wsws “demonizing” Gaddafi or “lying about him on any possible occasion.”

Throughout the 2011 war WSWS carried reports and commentaries on the Libyan situation virtually every day. Here is a sample. Just from the tone of the headlines it should be clear that the wsws was not engaged in demonizing Gaddafi , or anything like it.

because they are all puppets of the US. That's why they are helping finance the US Mercenary army which is currently tasked with trying to destroy Syria.- , they are doing it under instruction from the from the US overlords. And as even a blind fool can see the US is heavily infiltrated by Zionists, Jewish or otherwise.

If one is engaged in destroying something, as the US Israel and their Mercenary army currently are, it would be kinda hard to also at the same time "doing anything to help the poor Syrian People"

More at link.

In an astounding admission, the New York Times confirms that the so-called “Syrian opposition” is entirely run by Al Qaeda and literally states:

Nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of.

From the beginning, it was clear to geopolitical analysts that the conflict in Syria was not “pro-democracy” protesters rising up, but rather the fruition of a well-documented conspiracy between the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia to arm and direct sectarian extremists affiliated with Al Qaeda against the Syrian government.

This was documented as early as 2007 – a full 4 years before the 2011 “Arab Spring” would begin – by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh in his New Yorker article titled, “”The Redirection: Is the Administration’s new policy benefiting our enemies in the war on terrorism?” which stated specifically (emphasis added):

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has coöperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.

For the past two years the US, UK, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Turkey have sent billions of dollars and thousands of tons of weapons into Syria along side known-terrorists from Libya, Chechnya, neighboring Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. In the Telegraph’s article titled, “US and Europe in ‘major airlift of arms to Syrian rebels through Zagreb’,” it is reported:

There are well informed "global terrorist" researchers/observers who claim that Saudi Arabia has two main exports: Oil and Wahhabism.

Among close observers, Wahhabism is widely seen as an ultra-conservative branch of Sunni Islam. It is a religious movement among fundamentalist Islamic believers, with an aspiration to return to the earliest fundamental Islamic sources of the Quran.

"The Saudis have spent at least $87 billion propagating Wahhabism abroad during the past two decades, and the scale of financing is believed to have increased in the past two years." (From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahhabi_movement)

But the other part of the deal is that the Russians have removed their block on the US attacking Syria.

Apparently Russia has already advised all its citizens to leave Syria.

This is a must read article

BFP BREAKING NEWS: Boston Terror, CIA’s Graham Fuller & NATO-CIA Operation Gladio B-Caucasus & Central Asia

A major break in the Boston Terror CIA Connection took place last night when I came across a post outing CIA Operative Graham Fuller as the father of the woman married to Boston terror suspect’s infamous uncle Ruslan Tsarni. Further confirmation of this bombshell was received via mainstream reporter Laura Rozen here. Let me first provide a few excerpts from the original reporting site (a real alternative media):

Boston Bombers’ Uncle Married Daughter of Top CIA Official

The uncle of the two suspected Boston bombers in last week’s attack, Ruslan Tsarni, was married to the daughter of former top CIA official Graham Fuller . Ruslan Tsarni married the daughter of former top CIA official Graham Fuller, who spent 20 years as operations officer in Turkey, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. In 1982 Fuller was appointed the National Intelligence Officer for Near East and South Asia at the CIA, and in 1986, under Ronald Reagan, he became the Vice-Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, with overall responsibility for national level strategic forecasting.

all one has to do is just politely disagree and state the reasons for that..

Your sort of reply is just rude. And unnecessary. And frankly rather "Porcine"-like behaviour.

I don't agree with Sibyl's theory either, but to describe it as "Wingnuttery" suggests you are simply over-emotional about the whole thing.

For example Russia DID let US/ZATO attack Libya, which surprised a lot of people.

And Russia HAS been pussy-footing a little with regards to both Iran and Syria. It has for example refused to follow-through on agreed sales of Defensive Anti-Aircraft systems for example, which it has recently refused to deliver to Iran. It could deliver more up-to-date Air-defences to Syria also, but so far has yet to do so.

Such systems would go a long to ensuing that the Zio-Nazis and their US lapdogs would not launch an air attack on either Syria or Iran. For some reason the Russians, despite all their talk, do not seem interested in supplying these systems to countries under threat of attack from the US/Zio-Nazi axis of evil.

but as you stated - Russia has not been shy when it comes to trying to wipe-out the US-backed "Jihadi terrorists" in it's own back-yard. So imo Sybil's theory is wrong.

However Russia's lack of protection for Libya for example does leave a lot of room for speculation regarding it's true motives here.

Will they repeat the process where they at the last minute sell-out to the US/Zio-Nazi axis of evil and allow more dangerous Security Council resolutions to pass? In return for who-knows-what sort of quid-pro-quo with the US/Zio-Nazis?

Only time will tell.

It certainly is a possibility

The FSA terrorist attacks continue. Sanctioned by Washington & London & Tel Aviv.

A massive car explosion which hit central Damascus on Tuesday morning left at least 13 people dead and 70 others injured, according to Syrian state TV.

The incident took place in Marjeh district, a historic part of the capital. The blast went off near the Semiramis Hotel and a building which once housed the country’s Ministry of Interior Affairs. The ministry had earlier been moved to another site.

This could be a case of Russia just assassinating people they perceive as a "threat" AND/OR doing the US a favour by covering-up some embarrassing "loose-ends".

http://beforeitsnews.com/scandals/2013/04/russia-hit-sq....html

A Russian death squad killed two members of a CIA-backed Russian Jihad group operating in Dagestan in a raid earlier this morning that Russian intelligence has linked to Boston Bombings suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

The assassinations are just the latest in a trail of blood being used to cover up the tracks implicating CIA involvement in the Boston Bombings.

The death, and therefore assured silence, of these two individuals certainly would be useful for the US, if these two are genuinely connected to the Brothers Tsarnaev.

Capturing them and parading them in front of the cameras, while pointing the finger at the CIA/US, would make a LOT more sense than just offing these two, if Russia and the US were truly at odds over this.

And even if the pay-off is NOT a free-hand in "cleaning up" Russias Southern Flank of all the US-sponsored pretend "Jihadis" there may be some other pay-off down the line.

Certainly no one here has enough info either way to say a definite "yes/no" to that scenario.

So Sybil could be half-right.

She might be right about the Russia/US collusion aspect but just wrong about what the actual pay-off is for the Russkies

Actually it occurs to me that Russia cleaning up the CIA/US mess in the Caucuses might lead to the US backing off a little on the Syrian-front.

The Jackass John Kerry has recently made statements regarding increased funding for the US-Zio-Nazi sponsored mercenary army in Syria. However the US appears to be dragging it's feet in relation to actually making sure that their mercenary army actually gets the funding and supplie sthat the US/Zio-Nazis have been promising

eg:

Excerpt below from Asia Times (http://www.atimes.com/atimes/World/WOR-02-220413.html) would suggest that any claims that Obama is somehow intending to "dial down" the US financed War on the Syrian people are based more on wishful thinking than any objective analysis of facts.

US Secretary of State John Kerry announced that Washington will double its assistance to the Syrian opposition to US$250 million and will expedite delivery of new US military assistance to the Syrian opposition fighters. "I'm going to make sure this is a matter of weeks. It has to happen quickly; it has to have an impact," he said.

HOWEVER a similar report from the WaPo puts a slightly shine on this info
Kerry says U.S. will expedite new aid to Syrian opposition - http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/kerry-s....html
ISTANBUL — Secretary of State John F. Kerry said Sunday that the United States would push to expedite delivery of new U.S. nonlethal military assistance to Syrian opposition fighters, including body armor and additional communications equipment.

“I’m going to press to make sure this is a matter of weeks. It has to happen quickly; it has to have an impact,” Kerry said at a news conference after marathon meetings over the weekend to unify the rebel movement and its international backers.

He said there would be additional consultations with Gen. Salim Idriss, head of the rebel Supreme Military Council, who attended the meetings in Istanbul, to determine what the opposition forces most need.

“Movement of those items [directly] to Gen. Idriss,” Kerry said, “is going to have an impact, particularly in the south,” where rebel fighters have begun to gain territory. Donor nations meeting here also pledged to funnel all future aid — weapons largely provided by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and nonlethal assistance from the United States, Britain, France and others — through the military council to prevent it from falling into the hands of Islamist extremist groups that have grown in power within the anti-Assad ranks.

Far down in that WaPo report it does mention that

Kerry’s description of the body armor and other defensive material (the NON-Lethal stuff that the US/ZATO pretend is ALL they are supplying) was the first public confirmation that President Obama has approved additional shipments of nonlethal equipment directly to the rebel military, on top of the food and medical supplies that Kerry announced in February.

Those initial supplies have been slow to arrive, and senior administration officials said deliveries have been delayed by the need for congressional approval of funds, by the need for White House authorization to draw down military stocks and by what Kerry agreed Sunday had been “logjams” on the ground.

Kerry said that during his talks here with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, progress was made to remove impediments to delivery

SO: although Jackass Kerry is claiming that he will double the funding the fact is that the previous round of supplies and funding have not actually come through for the US/Zio-Nazi Mercenary Army in Syria

One might infer from that that the US is using this promise of future supplies and funding as leverage to gain more control over the Military situation, both with the Mercenaries and also as some leverage to use in discussions with the Russians.

And they certain HAVE spent money on this already.

The "Official" figures are

$385 million in humanitarian aid through international organizations and g . . . $117 million in funds and supplies [given] directly to the political and military opposition groups.

which is probably a lie and the real figure is probably multiples of that

If the US is still dangling the funding carrot in 3, 4 or 5 weeks time the YES, that would confirm that they are just playing a game with the promise of that funding. which MIGHT indicate that the US/Zio-Nazis are looking to do a deal of some sort with the Russkies, regarding the whole Syria thingy.

Equally, if the funding goes ahead in the next few weeks, then any claims that they are dialling-down the pressure on Syria would imo be proven to be unfounded.

We will just have to wait and see what the next few weeks brings.

And this excerpt from an Antiwar.com article certainly appears to indicate that some escalation may be being contemplated - though I suspect it's more a case of the Israeli's doing some tough-guy posturing and trying to pretend that they are more invulnerable, military-wise, than they actually are:

    - Jordan Agrees: Israel Can Use Airspace to Attack Syria - http://news.antiwar.com/2013/04/22/jordan-agrees-israel...yria/
Deal Will Allow Israel to Avoid Lebanon Overflights
by Jason Ditz, April 22, 2013

In a deal that will allow Israel to stop violating Lebanese airspace on a regular basis (if they do is another matter), Jordan has agreed two open two airspace corridors to Israeli planes and drones through their country.

The two corridors are meant to give Israel access to Syria for the purposes of drone surveillance, but Jordan has also agreed that Israel can use them to attack Syria in the future if they choose.

The deal reportedly came at the behest of US President Barack Obama, who pressed Jordan’s King to allow Israel the access. Jordan has also been hosting a growing US military presence along the Syrian border, currently focused on training rebels but also with an eye on a ground invasion to “secure” Syria’s chemical weapons.

Though it could be that the Zio-Nazis really do want to attack Syria.

Since the defeat of 2006 against Hez'b'allah the Zio-Nazis have realised that all their fancy-pants military hardware doesn't actually protect them against asymmetric warfare tactics such as those practised by Hez'b'allah.

So it's possible they might be hoping for an opportunity to go against a more conventional military force than Hez'b'allah in order to show the world just how tough they are. But if the Syrians have learned to use the existing supposedly out-dated Russian-supplied Air-Defences that they are reported to have, then the Zio-Nazis might be in for a little surprise.

Maybe a Zio-Nazi attack, if it happens, is intended to be a test of the existing supposedly out-dated Russian-supplied Syrian Air-Defences?

The Arab League here they are

-nothing better to do than make an announcement in Washington,

Representatives of the Arab League announced in Washington their support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which would be based on 1967 borders but include a "comparable and mutual agreed minor swap of the land."

This is a small but significant refinement of the Arab Peace Initiative (API), shifting the position from an inflexible demand on Israel to return to 1967 lines, to an endorsement of the principle of negotiated land swaps.

The development is a success for John Kerry in binding regional Arab support into his intensive efforts to the get the peace process moving.

The initial response from Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who is tasked with leading negotiations with the Palestinians, was to welcome the news as positive.

However, it will not in itself break the deadlock, which will require closing gaps between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
What has been announced by the Arab League in Washington?

Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani, following a meeting between Arab League representatives and US Secretary of State John Kerry, announced that: "The Arab League delegation affirmed that agreement should be based on the two-state solution on the basis of the 4th of June 1967 line, with the [possibility] of comparable and mutual agreed minor swap of the land."

Al-Thani also made clear that the delegation, "endorses President Mahmoud Abbas' effort for the peace," as well as giving "support for efforts for the economic help and aid," apparently in reference to Kerry's recently announced plans for economic development in the West Bank.

Will this help 1,000,000 Syrian refugees ?

US pledges to arm Syrian opposition as new terror bombing hits Damascus

http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2013/05/01/syri-m01.html

Looks like the salafist terrorists (as opposed to "rebels"!) are on the back foot so now their puppet masters, the US, have to up the ante to help them.

Any agreement regarding Chechnya and Russia from the US was probably minor. The US just didn't want the connection highlighted as the sleepwalking US public might be pissed off that their government was involved in deliberately fostering more Chechnyan jihadists for it's geopolitical games with Russia, just as it did with the mujahadeen in Afghanistan which led to Bin Laden and 9/11

Wouldn't want the public to make this connection while in an emotive state after the Boston bombing!!

So Russia probably got some small concessions in return for shutting up about the embarrassing Chechnya / Boston / CIA connection for a while until it all cools down a bit.

However I doubt it was as huge as giving the US carte blanche to attack Syria. Don't forget also that a very handy russian naval base is also located at Tartus in Syria.

The US media may be many awful things, but no one could ever accuse them of not being consistent- at least when it comes to certain subject areas; US-NATO-Chechen joint terrorism operations being one. The censorship of this topic goes to such extremes – where even modified-sanitized-pasteurized versions of related events and facts are nowhere to be found in the US media. Let me list a few globally known and reported facts, then add a few twos and twos and twos together, and see whether you can find any traces of that in the US mainstream media:

Assassinations of Chechen Terrorist Leaders in Turkey:

The following was reported by British paper Telegraph in September this year:

"Kremlin hit squad ‘assassinate Chechen Islamist in Istanbul’" ...

The triple murder was carried out by a lone gunman in less than thirty seconds using a 9mm pistol fitted with a silencer. It brought the number of Chechens assassinated in the Turkish city in the last four years to at least six. The gunman pumped eleven bullets into the three men in a busy Istanbul street before speeding off in a black getaway car.

One of the murdered men, 33-year-old Berg-Haj Musayev, was said to be close to Doku Umarov, an Islamist terrorist leader who is Russia’s most wanted man. The other two were said to be his bodyguards.

It was Umarov who claimed responsibility for the January suicide bombing of Moscow’s busy Domodedovo airport, an atrocity that left 37 people dead. Musayev’s widow Sehida said she was sure the Russian secret service was behind her husband’s murder, a view echoed by Murat Ozer, head of a Chechen Diaspora group in Istanbul.

What we have to remember is that a new Constitution has been adopted in Syria. The majority of people took part in the referendum, and of that majority, that majority voted that Constitution into law. NATO's proxy terrorists rejected that democratic result, just as NATO and its gangs in Libya consistently rejected any efforts to make peace, for example, peace initiates from the African Union.

There is no reason whatsoever for violence. The Baath Party has lost its privilege, under the new Constitution. If the Syrian people do not want Bashar al-Assad as President, they can peacefully vote him out. Those among the Irish establishment - and those among the bourgeois Left - who support terrorism are keeping that fact out of the media.

The UN and human rights have been mentioned here. Let's not forget that human rights are not the key principles of the UN Charter. The key principle is the sovereignty of nations. That is a legal fact. NATOs War On Libya was totally illegal under the UN Charter. All the more so given that human rights are far far more abused under the current lawless chaos in Libya than any level of abuse that Al Gaddafi was ever accused of - even by his worst enemies.

Similarly in Syria. Abuses committed by the Baath Party pale into insignificance when compared to the atrocities carried out, on a daily basis, by NATO's sectarian murder gangs - including forcing children to behead prisoners in the street and cutting the throats of women who have offended the Sharia. But, even the current atrocities of NATO's proxy gangs pale into insignificance, when compared with the Holocaust that will follow if the Syrian state collapses. Already the sectarian war between Sunni and Shia has spilled over into Iraq, which is now on the brink of open and all out sectarian Holocaust. The one million Iraqis, who have already died of NATO's humanitarian efforts, will certainly be joined by another million dead, as both Syria and Iraq descend into a single sectarian Holocaust. The Syrian government holds the thin red line between the peoples of Syria and Iraq and that inferno. The Syrian and Iraqi people know this, which is why the Iraqi government has rejected the calls of the USA to support the sectarian gangs in Syria, and why the majority of Syrians - Sunni, Alawite, Christian, Druze and Atheist are supporting the state against the sectarian gangs. Even in Aleppo, where the sectarian gangs have their main base, the rats themselves admit that the majority of people do not support them, and are sick and tired of their thieving, murder and sick interpretation of Islam - which includes the belief that its the right of the Jihadi to rape the captured women "of the enemy."

But, of course, the greedy Irish gombeens care nothing or know nothing about these facts. All they care about is being on the winning side, and being thrown some bones by the Americans for being loyal dogs. The bourgeois Left is even more despicable. Unlike the pig ignorant gombeens, they actually have a reasonably good idea of what's going on, and yet, they still push Iraq and Syria towards Genocide, just like they cheer led the racist lynch mobs in Libya as they strung up "Gaddafi Mercenaries" who turned out to be poor and defenseless Black workers - both Libyan and migrant.

"Let's not forget that human rights are not the key principles of the UN Charter."

This is a statement I have not come across before. Nevertheless, I'm happy to take your word for it.

Even so, I still believe that the people responsible for so very miserably and irresponsibly failing to go along with the "educational" suggestions in the section of the Preamble of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights reproduced below, as so many -- in all, or almost all of the nations which make up the UN appear (to me) to have done, and CONTINUE to do -- are not doing "humanity as a whole" any favours whatsoever; and, in addition, I personally would be extremely doubtful about their motives: so much so that any opportunity I get to "put a spanner in the works" for them, regarding their very deliberate and sinister suppression (as I see things) of the information in question, I always try to take advantage of.

"Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction."

Iran and Hezbollah are coordinating to seize control of large swaths of Syria in the aftermath of Bashar al-Assad's expected downfall, according to analysis published today by Israeli Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Dr. Shimon Shapira

. Details of the Iranian plan have been emerging since early 2013, when the Washington Post revealed Tehran's moves to create a network of militias inside Syria to preserve Iranian interests.

Shapira's analysis outlines the dimensions of a planned 150,000-man force, to be composed mainly of Shiites drawn from Iran and Iraq.

Iranian officials publicly emphasize the strategic importance of Syria to the Islamic republic.

Mehdi Taeb - the chief of a top Iranian think tank linked to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei - has described the country as Iran's "35th district... [and of] greater strategic importance" than parts of Iran.

Brig.-Gen. Dr. Shimon Shapira is being used by the Israelis for propaganda purposes. Either he is blatantly lying, or he is being fed false information, in his retirement, by the Israeli state. The idea of thousands of Shia militia traveling to Syria from Iraq and Iran is the most lurid kind of fantasy. Shia make up only 10% of the world's Muslims. The last thing they want is a genocidal war with the Sunni - backed up by the USA and Israel - that they could only loose.

The Sunni Al Qaeda-in-Iraq has sent hundreds of fighter to Syria, but there has been no Shia militias going there. They are too busy preparing to defend themselves in Iraq itself.

I very much doubt that the Syrian state will fall. Thankfully, it seems to be making significant gains against the sectarian gangs, and is showing a new confidence. No doubt, Iran will continue to support it with arms and money, and perhaps some special forces support, but thousands of militia fighters - no. To the great frustration of the USA and Israel, President al-Assad has managed to maintain the support of the majority of the Sunni population. He has done this precisely by avoiding the type of scenario that General Shapira fantasizes about. An influx of foreign Shia fighters would push the Syrian Sunnis into the arms of the terrorists.

Hezbollah may become the decisive factor. In 2006, it proved itself the equal to the Israeli military, and forced the Israelis into a humiliating withdrawal from Southern Lebanon. If Hezbollah can close the Lebanese border to the rats, they will no longer be able to mount major attacks on Damascus and will loose their foothold in Homs. In such a case, they will be limited to Aleppo, and will be totally dependent on Turkish supply lines.

Israeli warplanes 'launch air strike in Syria'
May 2013 Last updated at 04:04 GMT

US media reports suggest that Israeli warplanes have launched an air strike inside Syria.

The reports, quoting unnamed US officials, say the likely target was a weapons site. Some indicate the arms were to be sent to Lebanon's Hezbollah.

There has been no confirmation from the Israeli or Syrian government.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama says he does not foresee sending US troops to Syria, amid concerns over the possible use of chemical weapons there.

Speaking on a visit to Costa Rica, Mr Obama reaffirmed that clear evidence that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons would be a "game changer", but that any response would not be rushed.

    'Enemy planes'

The US officials - speaking on condition of anonymity - say the Israeli air strike probably happened on Thursday or Friday, but the aircraft did not enter Syrian airspace.

An Israeli embassy spokesman in Washington declined to comment.

But the spokesman - quoted by Reuters news agency - added:
"What we can say is that Israel is determined to prevent the transfer of chemical weapons or other game-changing weaponry by the Syrian regime to terrorists, especially to Hezbollah in Lebanon." - [the usual lies and bullshit then from the Zio-Nazis]

President Obama said he did not foresee "American boots on the ground in Syria"

The Syrian ambassador to the UN said he was not aware of any Israeli attack against his country.

Meanwhile, Lebanon's National News Agency cited a Lebanese army communique as saying that "two Israeli warplanes breached the Lebanese airspace over the southern town of Rmeish" on Friday.

It said "the enemy warplanes flew in circular manner over all Lebanese regions, and then left".

Earlier this week, Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon acknowledged that Israel had launched an airstrike in January against a target inside Syria.

He said that the transfer of sophisticated weapons to radical militant groups like Hezbollah was a red line for Israel, and Israel had acted when it was crossed. - [the usual lies and bullshit then from the Zio-Nazis]

[Zio-Nazi] Airstrikes Signal Western Desperation in Syria - http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/2013/05/israeli-airst....html

Alleged airstrikes hope to expand conflict, undermine Syrian advances, & provoke Syria and Iran to give US justification for military intervention.

May 4, 2013 (LD) - Once again, [the Zio-Nazis] are "leaking" information about alleged airstrikes they claim they have conducted against Syria along the Lebanese-Syrian border. According to CNN's "Sources: U.S. believes Israel has conducted an airstrike into Syria," it was stated that:

The United States believes Israel has conducted an airstrike into Syria, two U.S. officials tell CNN.

    And:

The [Zio-Nazis] have long said they would strike at any targets that prove to be the transfer of any kinds of weapons to Hezbollah or other terrorist groups, as well as at any effort to smuggle Syrian weapons into Lebanon that could threaten Israel.

This was the same flimsy pretext used in another allegedZio-Nazi attack on Syrian territory earlier this year.

In reality, the "other terrorists groups" Israel claims to worry about, are indeed funded and directed by the US, Zio-Nazi-Land, and Saudi Arabia as part of a long-standing, documented conspiracy to overthrow the nations of Iran and Syria.

What the [Zio-Nazi's] Alleged Air-Strike May Really Mean

Indeed, [the Zio-Nazi's] explanation as to why it struck neighbouring Syria is tenuous at best considering its long, documented relationship with actually funding and arming the very "terrorist groups" it fears weapons may fall into the hands of.

In reality, the pressure placed on Syria's borders by both Zio-Nazi-Land and its partner, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Turkey in the north, is part of a documented plan to relieve pressure on the Western, Zio-Nazi, Saudi-Qatari armed and funded terrorists currently collapsing inside Syria.

Lebanon Foreign Minister: Israeli air breaches pose danger to region - http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Politics/2013/May-04/2....ashx
(Last updated: May 04, 2013 02:10 PM)

Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour said Saturday that Israel’s ongoing violations of Lebanese airspace would not provide it the security it seeks and urged the international community to help end such breaches from taking place in the future.

Breaching UN resolutions, of course... but when have the Zio-Nazis ever give a flying f**k for UN Resolutions, eh?

Israel has intensified the rate of its flights over Lebanese airspace over the past several days, a development security sources attribute to the monitoring of cross-border weapons transfers with Syria.
In contrast to the routine near-daily flight patterns by Israeli jets, unusual flight patterns were recorded in the last 48 hours by the Lebanese Army.

Israeli planes continued to breach Lebanon’s airspace overnight Friday with sighting over the capital as well as northern and southern areas of the country.
According to the Lebanese Army, Israeli jets flew over the coast of Batroun and Shekka, both in north Lebanon, parts of south Lebanon and the capital.

“Between 8 p.m. and 11.05 p.m. [Friday], four Israeli warplanes violated Lebanese airspace over the maritime areas in Shekka and Batroun and executed circular flights above different Lebanese areas,” the Army said in a statement Saturday.

Between 10 p.m. and 1:35 a.m. the planes began exiting Lebanese airspace from the southern towns of Alma Shaeb and Rmeish, the Army said.

Another plane, according to the Army statement, violated Lebanon’s airspace at 10.30 p.m., flying over Naqoura, southern Lebanon. It exited Lebanese airspace at 3 a.m. Saturday after flying over Beirut, Riaq, Baalbek and Hermel.

President Michel Sleiman condemned Friday the recent Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty, calling them a continuation of the Jewish state’s “policy of intimidation” and a bid to destabilize the country.

No mention of any strikes whatsoever, though, which is interesting.

At this point, More than 24hrs later,it is still unclear whether any Zio-Nazi Air-strike actually took place.

This is the 2nd time the Zio-Nazis have claimed an Airstrike in Syria, and also the 2nd time they claimed that the target was a mysterious "convoy" [supposedly] "transporting missiles for Hizbullah". No evidence was ever produced to back up the Zio-Nazi claims the first time they made such claims, back in Jan 2013, either.

It's still equally probable this is nothing but the usual Zio-Nazis lies and propaganda.

Massive explosions shake Damascus – state TV

trong blasts have hit the Syrian capital, according to media and eye witness reports. According to state TV a military research center was targeted. It also says that the explosions have been caused by an Israeli rocket attack.

The blasts reportedly occurred in the area around Mount Qasioun in Damascus in the early hours of Sunday.

The area hosts a military research center in Jamraya, which came under Israeli attack earlier in January.

The Israeli Air Force conducted an airstrike on Syrian territory on Friday reportedly targeting a shipment of advanced missiles.

Video footage uploaded onto the Internet showed a massive ball of fire rising into the sky. RT could not immediately verify the authenticity of the video.

"During the attack, one Israeli jet was reportedly shot down by Syria's Air Force, according to Hezbollah's Manar TV channel, citing security sources in Damascus. Two Israeli pilots of the downed IDF jet have been taken to a military area in Damascus under Assad’s control, according to reports in Lebanese and Syrian media."

"While no official casualty number has been made public, rumors on Syrian social media say that at least 300 soldiers stationed at Mount Qasioun have been killed and hundreds of others injured. Many Syrians are calling for retaliation as the possibility of a full-scale war with Israel is speculated upon."

"There are reports of gunfire shots heard in outskirts of Damascus, apparently indicating that some rebel groups tried to seize the opportunity and went into offensive amid the commotion caused by the airstrikes. However, no major breakthroughs on their part were reported.

The rebel offensive however may give the Syrian government grounds to further accuse Israel of supporting the Syrian armed opposition by saying they had foreknowledge of the Israeli airstrikes and were prepared to move out."

All you need to do is look at the behaviour of your beloved Zio-Nazi Murder-Gangs, the IDF

"It s like the Germans carrying on deporting and murdering people to Auchswutz in the last months of WW2 in 1944 - 1945 when they knew they had lost the War "

Holocaust pimping again? I'd say "A new low" but for you it's not really, is it? You Zio-Trolls just can't help yourselves can you. You're the boy that cried "Wolf" but you're just too damn stupid to see it. Pretty much everyone else sees it though. And that is what scares you silly Zio-Nazis and Zio-trolls.

Actually the latest Army to do such a thing was in fact the so-called "Most Moral Army in the World"™, The Zio-Nazi Murder Gangs, also known as the IDF.

THEY dropped MILLIONS of cluster-bombs in and around civilian areas in Southern Lebanon immediately before they pulled back their forces in the brokered Truce-agreement -http://www.haaretz.com/news/idf-commander-we-fired-more...97099 - now THAT is REAL callous Nazi-like behaviour.

" he could have stopped at any time if he had talked to what was at the beginning "a loyal opposition "."

No he could not. The protests were violent from the start - guns were very quickly produced by the so-called rebels - The US/Zio-Nazi-financed mercenary Terrorists clearly had already infiltrated what ever "loyal" opposition existed, if any.

This take-down by the USZio-Nazi Gangsters was planned from at least 2007.

And US/Zio-Nazis were offering pots of money to "opposition" groups in Syria for several years before any violence broke out. Hard to call yourself "Loyal" when you're doing the bidding of US/Zio-Nazis Gangsters.

BUT the big LIE is that far from the nonsense the racist Zio-Troll "fred" would have people believe it is the US/Zio-Nazi financed "opposition" that are causing the violence - these people are nothing but "terrorists" in the REAL meaning of the word. The set out to terrorise the Syrian people with there beheadings and bombings and civilian massacres (all financed by the US/Zio-Nazis or their "Arab puppets")

This has been quite clear since the Arab League report very early in 2012 http://www.indymedia.ie/article/101276?#comment287695

They saw clear evidence that the US/ZioNazi financed terrorists were causing most of the violence, murdering and bombing and beheading US/Zio-Nazi financed murdering and bombing and beheadings no less)

Not that any of that will penetrate that thick web of lies, propaganda and non-stop bullshit, you have so tightly wrapped around your head, but still.

Let's just look at a little of what Zio-Nazis got up to last time they attacked and murdered civilians in one of the neighbouring states.

    Human Rights
Israel’s cluster bombs continue to kill and maim in Lebanon - http://electronicintifada.net/content/israels-cluster-b...10376

More than 400 Lebanese civilians — one quarter of them children [that is 100 innocent Children, for the mathematically-challenged] — have been injured by ZIO-NAZI cluster bombs since the end of the 2006 war.

      ........

“Every day we find cluster bombs in between the houses and in the fields,” said Ali Shuaib, community liaison manager at the Mines Advisory Group, a British organization clearing landmines and other remnants of war in Lebanon. “There are tens of villages like this all over the south.”

Although Lebanon has been plagued by landmines since its 1975-1990 civil war and subsequent Israeli occupation, it faced unprecedented contamination levels from cluster munitions after Israel launched a 34-day war in July 2006. According to Human Rights Watch, Israel’s use of the weapons was the most extensive anywhere in the world since the 1991 Gulf War.

      ........

These are the most indiscriminate weapons of modern warfare; 95 percent of all victims of cluster munitions are civilians, according to the organization Handicap International. Since the cessation of hostilities five years ago, 408 Lebanese civilians have been killed or injured by cluster munitions, 115 of them under 18 years old. Unless properly disposed of, the weapons keep killing and maiming for decades.

What sort of Nazis would drop MILLIONS of cluster bombs in civilian areas where they KNEW what the end result would be?

Zio-Nazis! That's what sort.

The "west's proxy army of terrorists" in Syria (a.k.a. "rebels") are losing ground so Israel were sent in to attack and provoke the Syrian air force into retaliating so the Israelis could have an excuse to blast them to shit, thereby giving the terrorists some breathing space and a huge military advantage.

Essentially an unofficial "no fly zone".

Hopefully the Syrian army will not rise to the bait.

Boycott all Israeli produce!! They are scum.

A dirty little secret is the fact that the US is not supposed to provide taxpayers money to nuclear armed states not adhering to the NPT yet it gives billions to Israel each year. That's why Israel refuse to acknowledge their 200+ nukes.

This needs to be highlighted.

http://www.moonofalabama.org/2013/05/the-angry-arabs-wi....html

The attacks Thursday or Friday on alleged "weapon transports to Hizbullah" were only a diversion to set a propaganda picture for today's air campaign. The U.S. will at least have known of this plan. It is likely that it helped to develop the target list.

A response will come, either through Lebanon or at sea, but not immediately. Five days ago Israel called up reservists for a surprise live fire training maneuver in the north. This supposedly to hold of an immediate retaliation for the long planned attack. But it can not keep reservist in the field for long. The economic impact is too big.

This air attack happened after the Syrian army's offense against the foreign sponsored insurgents showed some serious progress. Israel and the U.S. want to prolong the fighting. To achieve that they hit the Syrian army to "level the playing field". As even As'ad AbuKhalil finally acknowledges their aim is to destroy Syria. Not Bashar Assad, not the government but Syria the country. Their aim has not yet been achieved.

The Israeli attack and its now obvious cooperation with the so called Free Syrian Army will have a significant negative impact on the insurgency. In the early phase many Jihadist from other countries came to Syria because they believed in the propagandized cause of overthrowing an, in their view, un-islamic regime. That early flood has already changed into a trickle. This source of personal will now run dry. Likewise many Syrian patriots who had joined the insurgency will now change their mind. Defections from the army to the insurgency had already stopped. We will now see defectors from the insurgents who will be willing to (re-)join the army. They will have valuable intelligence.

In my estimate, gained from hundreds of videos and reports, the total number of insurgents has never been above 30,000. Early on casualties were compensated for by new recruitment. But the recent gains of the Syrian army already had me guessing that the number of insurgents was in decline. Either through defections, people being just tired of it and going home or due to weapon impacts. This process will now accelerate.

This is something neither the U.S. nor Israel can compensate for without putting boots on the ground. Something neither wants to do. A dwindling number of insurgents and the drying up of their recruitment pools, while the Syrian army can still replenish its ranks (if needed from outside the country) makes it certain that the insurgency will lose. The larger formations that currently hold territory will diminish in strength and melt away into a underground terror campaign that will be more of a nuisance than a real national danger. The Angry Arabs now more and more understand what this war is really about. They will no longer fight against Syria. Israel's attack accelerated that process.

In the above fred the first uses the Word "butcher" to describe the rightful leader of Syria Assad, but that is just apeing McCain, Obama and the CIA

What you are leaving out is that Syria has been attacked by a combination of US and british Imperialism and by Jihadists Shariahists and the country has been so pulverised that there is a huge danger of Hizbullah getting in its hands the most dangerous weapons. Sincé Hizbullah kills jews these weapons are a great danger to Jews.

The Israeli elite who lead the country have been in a state of paralysis and have been unable to take up ANY position.

But now to save the lives of Jews in Israel they must act.

In opposition to the last comment (and here I am not at all addressing the Mein Kamph guy above) I think that Israel must defend Assad against the Obama supported JIHAD. At the same time Israel must not drop its guard against Assad, or Hizbullah Fascists (remember the straight arm Nazi salute), Hamas, Fatah or Iranian Fascists.

There is a major problem though which is glossed over by bourgeois and pro-imperialist supporters of Israel like Mark Humphries and others.

That is that the Israeli elite (and in this they are the same as the Irish elite) are NOT independent, but they must become so, or they will perish. This necessitates building a new leadership (same again as in Ireland)

But the above pro Israel person (fred the first) is NOT defending Assad from the Obama led JIHAD…big problem right there fred. Note this well Fred if you are not defending Assad then you are in favour of his overthrow by a coalition of Western Imperialism and the worst Fascists the world has seen on an equal with the Hitlerite Nazis, the modern day Sharia seeking Jihadists)

People like you fred the first sek to opt out of that but there is no neutral ground, no fence on the middle of the battlefield to sit on. It is either one ot the other.

The problem is fred the first as you well know the left in Ireland is so blinded by Antisemitism. They really HATE the Jewish Homeland so in essence hating the Jews.

Still fred the Jews need a strategy based on principle

Against that think of this my friend:

Just a rough sketch (not in any way exhaustive) of some needs for Israel and for lovers of the Jews

1. Be independent, that is the first step. That centres though on leadership.

2. Make their position clear in Word and Deed, they are opposed to the NATO/Obama/Muslim Brotherhood war on Assad, to topple Assad etc.

3.Israel as an independent state to call for unity with the people of Iran and against Obama and the Fascist Mullahs. That is partly the position of Ken Timmerman who is a nationalist and Zionist

4.Israel must not delay a second longer and must strike with all it has got, including if necessary tactical nuclear weapons, to stop the Iran Nuclear Bomb. The wsws.org group has got big illusions in the Iranian Antisemitism…a crime I think against Trotskyism and Marxism

5. Retake Gaza and Sinai now!

6.Destroy all chemical weapons and other weapons of Assad when they judge they threaten Israel. I support every strike Israel makes on Assad which is made from their own independent position. On the other hand the idea that Israel should do anything as part of a pact with Obama and the likes of the Saudis, Qatar or Erdogan, is frankly sickening.

7. Oppose the US elite but seek a closer Alliance with the American people in every way possible. I know Congress is inadequate here but it is a start.

In other words Israel should break decisively with US and EU Imperialisms in Word and Deed, something which it has never done, certainly in public, which is where it counts.

In relation to the defence of Assad which is absolutely necessary, that is defence against the western backed Jihad, itself a crime, the key experience is both Yugoslavia (defence of Milosevic and Karadzic) but also more recently Mubarak. There is no difference whatsoever between the defence of Mubarak against the Obama backed Muslim Brotherhood Jihad, Ben Ali, Gaghbo and through to Assad.

Yet what we found is that the fake Trotskyists on wsws.org were calling for the overthrow of Mubarak AT THE VERY SAME TIME THAT OBAMA WAS ALSO DOING SO. Quite amazing that a group (led by North) should sink so low after a lifetime of work.

Those who said that this was a revolution were off their rockers. It was never a revolution. It was always a counter revolution. The Pew Poll had stated clearly that 90 plus % of Egyptians wanted Sharia.

In those conditions the only way to prevent a Muslim Brotherhood takeover and Sharia involving the enslavement of women and the Hitlerite closing down of trade unions was to defend Mubarak in power. Many many times history throws up these kinds of choices.

The wsws actually as a “Trotskyist” claiming movement totally betrayed those young people who had grown to hate Mubarak but who were totally underestimating Islam and Sharia. In other words they had been badly miseducated. The wsws adapted to that backwardness. Such a betrayal of Trotskyism and Marxism.

The wsws on the issue of Egypt betrayed and will never recover from that

Felix Quigley, The Fake Marxist above, producer of the usual 100% pure-GUBU Bullshit, would like people to

    A) "Defend Assad!!" - even though it is Syria and Syrian Civilians that are the casualties and the target sin this US-Zio-Nazi financed attack on Syria, and not "Assad" this bogeyman that Zio-racist trolls like Felix pretend is the cause of all the violence. Felix and his Zio-Troll mates want to pretend that the US/Zio-Nazi Gangsters have not been supporting the Terrorists that are attacking Syrians in Syria.

    B) He also wants people to "Defend Israel" even though by now, even a slightly dim child should be able to work out that it is Israeli that has ATTACKED, without any Military provocation whatsoever, Syria.

How can someone "defend Assad" even though the target is the Syrian people themselves, while at the same time "Defend Israel!!" when Israel has all along been backing the terrorist Army that is attacking Syrians in Syria.

So now when the Zio-Nazis up the attacks to Airstrikes the Tag-Team of Zio-Trolls, operating under a fake Marxist persona, and a fake "fred" persona (bizarre enough in itself) come out to defend the indefensible with complete nonsensical arguments

Felix Quigley (well known around here as a supporter of the openly Fascist EDL) claim both are victims - even tough it is Israel that has launched the attack on Syria - Clearly the one launching the attack is no "victim".

Clearly the Zio-Nazis are launching attack without provocation.

Clearly the Zio-Nazi-State is no "victim".

Both want to pretend that there is some truth to the Israeli claims that the Syrian Gov't have used or are preparing to use Chemical Weapons - this is of course nothing but lies, as if it could be anything else given who is saying it - here is the proof - The BBC now reports that a UN Investigation team has found evidence that it is the US-Israeli-financed Terrorists that may have used such chemicals - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22424188

These claims about Syrian Gov't and Sarin are just lies use by Zio-Nazi trolls such as Felix (the fake Marxist) and "Fred" the racist troll to distract people from the few facts available

Israel, in true Nazi fashion, launched an Air Attack on the nation of Syria, without ANY provocation whatsoever.

These 2 trolls will attempt to spin a web of lies and bullshit in order to try and obscure that FACT.

There next trolling efforts will probably claim that Syria needs to be attacked to get Sarin away from the terrorists - even though they are financing and supporting those very same terrorists, And where might these terrorists have gotten "Sarin" from? Certainly unlikely to be from the Syrian Gov't.

Who else does that leave?

Well, the Israelis themselves certainly have access to supplies of "Sarin". As does the US and UK etc etc

Anyone looking to hunt the source of the terrorists "Sarin" (if the whole story isn't just more US/Zio-Nazi financed lies and propaganda, which it most likely is anyway) might want to start in either the US or Zio-Nazi-Land itself, the State of Israel.

Earlier Fred-the-Zio-Nazi-Troll quite dishonestly claimed that:

" Hizbollah said overnight the Israelis had missed a previous transport of missiles which they now have in Lebanon ."

this is of course a knowing lie in order to re-enforce the perception that the most recent Zio-Nazi attacks actually have something to do with Hezbollah and some fairytales about "missile shipments" from Iran.

This is all part of the usual concerted Zio-Nazi propaganda campaign - so far the Zio-Nazis have made claims like this several times, yet not one piece of evidence has ever been produced to support those claims.

They are merely the usual lies that the Zio-Nazi spread in order to try and justify future murderous bombing on their part.

Both the Fred-zio-troll and the Felix Quigley fake-Marxist Zio-troll, are pushing hard on claiming that the Zio-Nazis are merely protecting themselves from either HezB or from scary scary imaginary "Sarin "

Both of these "reasons" are just plain lies.

so "fred" the racist Zio-Troll just made up an on-the-spot lie about HezB claiming:

"Hizbollah said overnight the Israelis had missed a previous transport of missiles which they now have in Lebanon "

when he knows that no such thing happened at all - that he is in fact deliberately lying.

But what else can one expect from either of these 2 racist Trolls?

The truth certainly will not help them.

The "truth" will show them to be the blood-thirsty hate-filled war-mongering monsters that they are.

So lies is all they have.

Yes, a lot of what you say has merit but, hey, any chance you could write a proper article about the attack instead of pointlessly and abusively duking it out in the comments section with trolls. All that does is help the trolls achieve their aims to drive more people away from this site. I'm sure moderators can deal with trolls more effectively if nobody responds to them.

The WSWS you dislike so much seemingly agrees with you somewhat about the Israeli attacks on Syria:

The Israeli attacks on Syria:

A crass apology for imperialist intervention in Syria:

The real problem is insidious writers like Gilbert Achcar of the pseudo-left United Secretariat

"who recently dismissed criticism of imperialist involvement in the Syrian war as a “kind of conspiracy theory.” Since it supported the 2011 NATO war in Libya to remove Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the pseudo-left fraternity has stepped up its activity as propagandists for imperialist wars for regime-change, waged in alliance with right-wing sectarian elements and reactionary regional powers."

They wanted to provoke the Assad air force so they could annihilate it and help their jihadist terrorist proxies

Motivations possibly include:
to drag out the conflict and destroy Syrian infrastructure / military / society
to suck Hizbollah into the conflict and weaken them / pit them against Al Nusra
to weaken Iran by damaging / eliminating an ally and damage it's future pipeline plans
to get rid of a Russian ally in the region and lose Russia it's port facility
to install a proxy puppet in Syria
to sell lots more weapons to local arab countries.

Now how is Obama gouing to blame this on Assad? The rebels story would make a cat laugh.

Syrian rebels have abducted four UN peacekeepers monitoring a ceasefire line between Syria and the Israel-occupied Golan Heights, a UN peacekeeping spokesman has said.

A Syrian rebel group identified as the “Yarmouk martyrs brigade” claimed responsibility for the act, saying the peacekeepers had been detained for their own safety after clashes erupted in the separation zone between Syria and Golan, Reuters reports. They further said the presence of Syrian government forces threatened the safety of the peacekeepers, as well as “criminal elements” in the area.

And here you are lying again

SO unless you provide some actual proof that any sane person would be best advised to treat everything you say as a lie -

The Syrian conflict has been accompanied by a distinct media narrative. Within this narrative - which poses a binary division between the forces engaged in the conflict, identifying the players as good (the rebels, who must receive 'our' support) and bad (the government) - the role the West must play is that of potential saviour, whose aim is to cautiously observe the conflict so that it may intervene to 'fix' the situation, as The Guardian's Simon Tisdall put it:

So what can Obama do? As Vladimir Putin was expected to make plain to John Kerry in Moscow on Tuesday, he cannot count on Russian (or, therefore, Chinese or UN security council) support to fix Syria.

This sentiment, that the West can put right the Syrian situation, is inherent to most reporting of the conflict. The BBC - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22385154 - recently reported that - 'the pressure to act has intensified in recent days after emerging evidence that Syria has used chemical weapons such as the nerve gas sarin'. This statement presents the existence of a 'pressure to act' as a given, though the source of such pressure is unidentified. From where is this pressure emerging? As a - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22385051 - BBC report points out - , public opinion in France, the UK, the US, and Germany is by majority opposed to the possibility of intervention in the conflict through sending arms and military supplies to the Syrian opposition.

The BBC is not then speaking on behalf of the public majority. Pressure towards military intervention, to some extent considered a desirable option by the UK government (if it can 'achieve the result [they] want', as Cameron put it in an interview with Nick Robinson), is, however, increasingly mounting within the media itself.

    Chemical Weapons 'Evidence'
It is also important to note that the 'emerging evidence' referred to above is not conclusive despite the wording of this report. The BBC - http://www.newsunspun.org/eotn/language-creep-as-bbc-di...syria - reported again on Monday 6 May - that 'Western powers have said their own investigations have found evidence that government forces have used chemical weapons'. Again, this is simply not the case.

'Western powers', regardless of their true intentions, have in fact been very cautious in public about how precisely they present their claims, underscoring the lack of conclusive evidence they have found and that there exists the possibility that chemical weapons had been used by the Syrian government. This misrepresentation by the BBC emerges in a context in which the use of chemical weapons has been signified by the UK and US as the point at which they may become militarily involved in the Syrian conflict. As such these details, so easily misrepresented by the BBC, are of high consequence.

(There are other examples of BBC reports dangerously getting important facts wrong about such issues: - http://www.newsunspun.org/eotn/bbc-deception-continues-...eport - just over a year ago - , for example, a BBC news report stated that the 'International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report with new evidence showing Iran was secretly working towards obtaining a nuclear weapon' - in this case the report said no such thing.)

    Journalists Pushing for Intervention
In recent reports, certain BBC journalists have appeared more hawkish than government officials themselves. Take for example a question - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22316517 - put to Cameron by the BBC's Nick Robinson - :

"Do you ever fear that a terrible thing is happening in our world and that Western leaders cannot or will not act because of a fear of another Iraq?
Cameron responded with 'I do worry about that',

before clarifying that what he has concluded from the 'Iraq lesson' is that the UK should only enter into conflicts it can win, that 'the ability is there'. This is at a far remove from the implication of Robinson's question that past 'mistakes' might prevent the West from playing a righteous humanitarian role. Yet Robinson's leading question provides the basis for the seemingly unambiguous headline: 'Cameron fears Iraq effect holding West back in Syria'.

There is a prevailing trend of journalists taking up the position of presenting the case for military intervention in Syria and proactively pushing government representatives to commit to intentions for military action. On the - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22418204 - Andrew Marr show on 5 May - Jeremy Vine asked Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond a number of questions which demonstrated this pressure by the media for the UK to become involved in the Syrian conflict. When Hammond appeared cautious regarding the prospect of military intervention, stating that the UK would need to engage in discussion with the UK's 'allies and partners', Vine admonished, 'you're talking about having a series of meetings'. Another brief exchange emphasises Vine's apparent desire to see the UK intervene:

Phillip Hammond: 'Frankly that [the potential use of chemical weapons] is not what's delivering the tally of 70,000 that have been killed… the majority of these people have been killed by conventional weapons'.

Jeremy Vine: 'More reason to do something then...'

These comments reflect the consistency of BBC reporting which seems aimed towards creating a case for war. When Carla Del Ponte, of the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told reporters that there were 'strong, concrete suspicions' that the rebels - perhaps not as virtuous as would be convenient for States considering providing military support - - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22424188 - may have used chemical weapons - , the tone of BBC reporting did not suggest that the pressure for military action should be alleviated.

Analysis of Attacks on Syria: Real and Imagined
Taking the case a step further, Jonathan Marcus, the BBC's diplomatic correspondent, discussed the - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22379191 - various ways in which the US could attack Syria - .

His assessment reads more like a military strategy report than an analysis of events for a news provider. Surgical airstrikes, Marcus said, 'could be carried out by cruise missiles launched from aircraft well outside Syrian airspace or from warships or submarines in the Mediterranean', while a wider air campaign, 'might have to be preceded by a significant effort to destroy missiles, associated radars and command systems and might well involve losses'. Why it is in the public interest that such analysis is brought to us by journalists is unclear. Through Marcus's piece, which is nothing more than speculation of military strategy on an as yet non-existent, illegal military intervention, the idea of an attack on Syria from outside is normalised further.

The reporting on the air strikes that Israel has carried out on Syria also reveals how normalised warfare has become in BBC reporting, with very little discussion of casualties or of the chaos inflicted on the people who were bombed. What was important, in this story, it seems, is that Israel was protecting itself from weapons that were supposedly being transported. This is summed up - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-21275289 - in the BBC's Q&A page on the Israeli airstrikes - : in answer to the question 'Why would Israel attack?' we are told that 'the statements from unnamed officials suggest Israel's actions are defensive.' If the Syrian government had, for example, attacked the Israeli air force within Israel, to prevent airstrikes on its own territory, it is extremely unlikely that this would be overwhelmingly reported as an act of defence. Yet when Israel bombs another country, BBC journalists and editors happily report such actions as 'defensive' measures.

Jonathan Marcus - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22419221 - writes - that Israel's airstrikes are 'designed to send a powerful signal' (the headline: 'Israeli air strikes: A warning to Syria's Assad'). It is worth at this point noting that following the last Israel attack on Syria, in early 2013, - http://www.newsunspun.org/article/legitimising-violence...flict - Marcus also wrote - that this was 'in one sense pre-emptive, but also a warning'. It was also portrayed as a 'signal'. That such attacks are continuously reported as warnings and signals, as seemingly rational, and therefore it seems permissible, actions, goes further to normalise them. We might wonder how many attacks Israel would have to inflict on another country before Jonathan Marcus stops referring to the attacks as 'signals' and 'warnings'?

In their seeming urgency to present a case for war, BBC reporters have neglected factual accuracy of reported events. Scepticism towards the unsupported claims of Western governments, insistence upon proof, is also lacking. We are presented with a simplified narrative, of 'good versus evil', in which the possibility of misconduct on both sides of the conflict is considered improbable. This style of reporting very much takes its lead from the positions of Western governments. Whitehouse spokesman Jay Carney - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22427551 - outlined the position of the US - : 'We are highly sceptical of suggestions that the opposition could have or did use chemical weapons. We find it highly likely that any chemical weapon use that has taken place in Syria was done by the Assad regime, and that remains our position'.

The supposed instincts of the US or UK government, despite the inconclusive nature of the evidence, as to the righteousness of the Syrian rebels is not proof of the reality and should not be considered by journalists as such.

"The timing is certainly very suspicious – a couple of weeks ago the Syrians were accused of using poison gas, and then Carla Del Ponte from the United Nations said recently that it appears that it was the insurgency used this poison gas. Suddenly the poison gas disappears, then this bombing happens. I think you have to ask, would the Assad government be stupid enough to pick an open fight with a country on its border that has the second largest army in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization? I don’t see the sense in that; it would suggest that the Assad regime has a suicide complex, and they haven’t demonstrated any of that in the past."

The WSWS article linked to by "fred" is accurate, but it mostly concerns the ISO , which is mainly a US-based organization and not such a player in the European anti-war movement . The ex lefts who are presently formulating the pro-imperialist positions within the Irish Anti War Movement are more aligned with the International Socialist Tendency and the British SWP than they are with the ISO . In 2001 the ISO was expelled from the International Socialist Tendency after a dispute with the British SWP . Relations between the two groups were strained for a number of years after that split , but they have according to reports grown closer to each other again more recently. The positions the IST and the ISO take in support for CIA-backed rebels in Libya and Syria are practically identical. Had the CIA/Al Qaida/MI6 operative Madhi al-Harati been living in the US rather than in Ireland , he would likely have been a prominent supporter of the ISO-backed anti-war movement - since he was living in Ireland , he was a backer of the IAWM .

This is from a WSWS report of a recently organized congress in Germany called “Marx is Muss” , which was sponsored by the IST’s Marx21 - a group operating within the German Left Party .

“The overtly right-wing character of the congress is reflected in its support for imperialist intervention in Syria. Marx 21 is one of the most vocal supporters of the aggression organised by the great powers to topple the Assad regime and of preparations for war against Iran.
Coinciding with the Israeli bombing of Syrian territory and the stepping up of preparations by the US and the other powers for military invasion, Marx 21 is intensifying its propaganda for war.
At the Berlin congress this weekend, Marx 21 member Frank Renken is due to discuss the “progressive nature” of the Syrian opposition. By concealing the real character of the Syrian rebels, consisting mainly of Islamist extremist terrorists, Marx 21 is helping to mobilize support for the rape of Syria. The financing and arming of the Syrian rebels by the US and reactionary Gulf monarchies do not go far enough for Renken. In a recent article, he lamented that “the rebels do not have tanks, helicopters or aircraft” and had received “very few portable infrared-guided anti-aircraft missiles”.
The list of international invitees at the congress also provides a glimpse into its class character. Alex Callinicos, professor of European Studies at King’s College London and a leading theorist of the International Socialist Tendency, personifies the transformation of former petty bourgeois radicals into stalwarts of imperialism.
Callinicos and his co-thinkers, in response to the revolutionary mass struggles in Egypt and Tunisia in early 2011, initially gave their support to the Egyptian military and the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, which then suppressed the working class. He is on record attacking opponents of a war against Syria for displaying “reflexive and unthinking anti-imperialism”.”

A revolution needs a mass movement by people, you should be able to mobilize the overwhelming majority of your people in order to call your movement a "revolution".

If your movement -for whatever reason- cannot mobilize vast masses then it cannot be called a revolution. Just because a few students or some artists or intellectuals, or some labour activist in a developing country is thrown in jail and oppressed, that doesn't turn his or her action -however progressive and brave it maybe- into a 'revolution'.

The dilemma that the left faces (which in my opinion is not actually a dilemma, what they should do is pretty clear: TAKE AN ANTI-IMPERIALIST POSITION) is that there is no *mass* movement in middle east with which the left can agree and this perhaps has been explained the best by Tariq Ali himself, - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oYdvQZVvrU - in a 2009 lecture:

"Now we can all wish that there were a mass, large, secular, socialist -preferably- party movement in that part of the world, but there isn't, so what are we going to do? are we then going to stand back and say 'no! the west has the right to re-colonize the world because there isn't a political organization in that world that we can agree with?' That is an all pro-sectarian position which actually pushes people in the direction of the west" (minutes 20:00-20:48)

What exists in that part of the world are two opposing forces: 1) Independent (not necessarily democratic but independent) forces, 2) pro-western, pro-imperialist forces.

So I ask the same question as Ali does: "so what are we going to do? are we then going to stand back and say: no! the west has the right to re-colonize the world because there isn't a political organization in that world that we can agree with?"

The main problem with that petition is that it fantasizes about a 'revolution' or a 'struggle' in Syria which does not exist and even worse it convinces itself that the pro-western forces (ie. the rebels) are those 'revolutionaries' , and then they declare their solidarity with it. The ironic part is that this fact that there is no 'struggle of masses for dignity in Syria' is - http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/01/04/an-interview-wit...in-3/ - acknowledged by Finkelstein himself:

"I don’t think it’s much of a civil war because I don’t think the internal population has much say any longer in what’s going on."

He later on goes on (in the same interview) to say that:

"It’s turned into a proxy war, with a large number of regional and global powers, including, regionally, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Iran having a dirty hand in what’s going on. And then Russia on one side, the U.S. on the other, having probably the most significant hand in what’s going on. And then there are of course the British and the French."

But he does not elaborate on what the Iranian, or the Russians want and how that contradicts the interests of the Syrian masses. To be specific why Iranians and Russians are against the "rebels"? Do the Syrians have some natural resources which Iran/Russia covet? Do they want to monopolize the Syrian markets for their "exports" (which they don't have and are far from having)? Are they interested in the cheap Syrian labour market for their own (Russian/Iranian) capital?

Today Iran's sole interest in Syria is to keep it from becoming a US satellite and going in league with Israel. Is that against the Syrian people's interests? What is the position of the "revolutionary" forces in Syria? Are they "struggling" against Asad's collaboration with ISrael against Hezballah? What are they "struggling" for? Does the "dignity" for which they are "struggling" lie in collaboration with Saudies and Qataries?

This self-contradiction in their (ali's and finkelstein's) position is not peculiar to this petition. If you watch the vidoe of Tariq Ali's lecture which I linked above in its entirety you will see what he says regarding the so-called "green movement" (the Iranian equivalent of the rebel forces in Syria) in minutes 30:47-33:34:

"the crisis in Iran which has to be viewed soberly. I mean my heart was with the students and the others on the streets, desparately trying to get a way out of the regime that they feel is oppressive. But their problem was that the people they had chosen to back were some the most repressive produced within the system: 'Mousavi', who is he? this great defender of the liberal ideas? As prime minister of Iran he carried out massive attacks and repression of large numbers of left wing and trade union groups in the country directly responsible for sending people to death chambers. So let's have a sense of perspective.

Obviously people follow who they want to try and remove someone whom they regard as the bigger threat. Rafsanjani, Mousavi's big backer, one of the big billionairs, who grew rich because of his role in the early days of the clerical regime. That is why he was defeated by ahmadinejad in the first place in 2005, it was a class based election the first time ahmadinejad won. Because these things matter even in that country. And the tragedy of this movement, which is a good movement by and large, is that it is trapped within the frame work of the system that exists in that country, till now, hopefully it will get out.

But it is not a movement which has been able to transcend that, including in some of their slogans. And it is no good imagining that they can do that. And we know now from a lot of stuff that has appeared in the middle eastern press that they (ie. the mousavi supporters) were promised that if mousavi came to power they would immediately stop all backing for Hezbollah and Khaled Mashaal, in other words basically do a deal with Israelies.

And all the opinion polls -I am not saying that there were no ballot rigging, I am sure that there was- but all the opinion polls including the polls carried by the new american foundation virtually showed the same results that the election elections produced. I just say that. Sometimes, over-eager civil servants and beurocrats creat a mess. So Iran from an internal point of view is a mass."

Now on one hand QUITE CORRECTLY he points to the fact Mousavi is one of the worst elements coming out of the Islamic republic, with his hands in the blood of thousands of people, and that Rafsanjani is one of the most corrupt people ever produced by the Islamic republic, on the other hand he expresses that his heart is with Mousavi supporters.

He says that Mousavi were desparately trying to get of a regime who is oppressing them and that he was sure that there was ballot rigging. But then he adds that all opinion polls including the ones by the new american foundation showed the same results that the elections produced!!! So how is he so sure of ballot rigging?

And if the election results were showing the true will of majority then what does that reduce those "students" who were crying "give me back my vote!" to? Are they now reduced to people who wanted to steal an election and impose their own will on the majority? He himself says that those "students" (ie. the middle-class equivalent of the Iranian "rebels") were trying to make a deal with the Israelies (and he is UNDENIABLY right in that) and then he says that he considers their "movement" to be "a good movement by and large!"

Now how does that work???

Incidentally it is very interesting to see the significant parallels between the pro-US/Israeli rebels in Syria, and the pro-US/Israeli "Mousavi" supporters in Iran.

Also Ali in that lecture mentions that the first ahmadinejad victory came as class-based victory in 2005.

But very curiously he does not mention the same thing about the elections in 2009!

2009 elections were even more class-based than 2005's elections. The elections slogans very clearly showed the class-based nature of the elections in 2009.

The Syrian army is still preparing to liberate the city of Qusayr which is situated on one of the main supply routes for both the insurgency as well as for the army. Civilians fleeing the surrounded city - http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/05/16/191432/refugees-f....html - report - that about a thousand insurgents in the city are digging in but are low on ammunition.

Anonymous U.S. intelligence people - https://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/17/world/middleeast/rus...share - claim - that Russia delivered a new version of anti-ship missiles to Syria. There is no mentioning of when exactly that is supposed to have happened. Last month, last year or three years ago? It also not clear why that is supposed to be a change. Syria already has able coast defense forces that would make a supply of the insurgents via a sea route quite dangerous. Additionally, as U.S. media - http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323398204....html - only now note, there is new permanent Russian navy force in the Mediterranean that could challenge any attempts of a coastal siege or even a no-fly zone. The "new weapons" story seems to be a plant (to "Iraqi WMD" reporter Michael Gordon) to allege recent Russian delivery of arms to Syria even if there is no proof for such. But the claim can be used to justify the delivery of U.S. weapons to the insurgents.

The exiled Syrian opposition is now - http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/syrian-....html - demanding - new arms as a condition for agreeing to peace talks. The seem to understand that the current losing state of the insurgency does not give them any leverage in negotiations.

For the third time insurgents have - http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/un-3-un....html - abducted - UN observers in the Golan height zone and looted their observation post. The Syrian government - http://www.innercitypress.com/syria1pkemail051513.html - claims to have an email that prove contacts between the Qatari government and the UN kidnappers in one of the earlier cases. Qatar is said to have invested about $3 billion to keep the insurgency in Syria going.

"Western" pro-insurgents "experts" - https://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/17/world/middleeast/pre...world - claim - that Syria is breaking up into various parts. As the facts on the ground would not yet agree to that, this campaign suggest that such a breakup is the aim of the "expert's" sponsors.

Obama met with the Turkish sultan Erdogan. There seems to be no agreement between them on how to continue their onslaught on Syria. The only point they agree on is a meaningless "Assad has to go" which would then be a starting point for "something". Zionist lobby "experts" - https://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/17/opinion/can-obama-sa...share - urge - the U.S. to further intervene with a no fly zone to save Erdogan's - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2325626/Chaos-T...wsxml - endangered - political position and U.S. "credibility". In the run up to World War I it was Germany's "credibility" towards a misbehaving ally that had to be saved. That did not end well.

By May 15th 2012, The Washington Post were (http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/s....html) reporting that 'Syrian [US/Zio-Nazi financed Terrorists] battling the [Gov't of Syria] have begun receiving significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, an effort paid for by Persian Gulf [US/Zio-Nazi Medieval Puppets] and coordinated in part by the United States' .

After a (http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/world_news/Ame...6.ece) lull in the the supply during the late summer and early Autumn of 2012 (during which the level of casualties started to decline) the NYT times (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/25/world/middleeast/arms...&_r=0) reported on March 24th 2013 that 'With help from the C.I.A., Arab [US/Zio-Nazi Puppet] governments and Turkey have sharply increased their military aid to Syria’s [US/Zio-Nazi financed Terrorists] in recent months'.

While correlation obviously doesn't apply causation, there is a very definite correlation between the level of monthly casualties in Syria, and the shipping in of arms by the U.S and [US/Zio-Nazi Medieval Puppets] Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Namely, that

The number of people being killed in Syria rose dramatically in the weeks immediately following the onset of [US/Zio-Nazi financed] gun running operation in the January of 2012.

The number of people being killed in Syria again increased dramatically during the period when that operation is reported to have been significantly expanded circa May 2012,

The number of people being killed in Syria declined when the supply was said to have been reduced during late summer and early autumn 2012, and

The number of people being killed in Syria started to rise again as the supply was again stepped up circa February 2013 .

And this graph is perhaps indicative that those who've alleged that the funnelling of arms into Syria is simply exacerbating the conflict and so by extension killing more people.

Worth remembering the next time Hague and Cameron, backed by a chorus of media cheer leaders, call for (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/03/hague-aid-s...apons) yet more arms to be sent to the [US/Zio-Nazi financed Terrorists] to 'save lives'.

She said that the rebel soldiers had put a bomb in his pocket and that he was blown apart (she gestured grotesquely). “And why did they kill him?” she cried. “Because we are Shi’ite”.

She pulled out a crumbled photo of the boy from her pocket and kissed it repeatedly. I borrowed the photo briefly and kissed Mohamed too.

The Woman from Mount Qasioun

He was walking to work when a mortar shell blew off his legI shared dinner with a very articulate woman who lived on the slopes of Mount Qasioun, which is within jogging distance of the centre of town.

Mount Qasioun is the mountain that was bombed last week by Israeli jets. This woman told me that she had been thrown out of her bed by the force of the explosions!

The Israelis claimed they were targetting a convoy of weapons bound for Hezbollah, and the US President excused the attack accordingly. This woman though told me that three very precise targets had been hit:

  • The barracks of ‘Brigade 14′ – Bashar Al-Assad’s elite ‘royal guard‘
  • The ammunition dump
  • The military research centre

This would suggest that the attack had nothing to do with Hezbollah, though sources in Lebanon have said that seven Hezbollah personnel had been killed in the attack.

Either way though, this was a direct attack by Israel on Syria and not on Hezbollah, and it has the potential to lead to World War III.

This is the third Israeli assault on Syrian soil.

The plan seems to be to continue to provoke Syria with small murderous acts until Israel gets a response. That response is not likely to come from Syria (whose resources are completely tied up with its internal struggle) but from Iran (whom many believe are really in control of Syria now). Once this happens, the Israelis will have the excuse they need to launch an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

It seems that the US has not given Israel permission to attack Iran. If Iran attacks Israel though Netanyahu won’t need permission. He’ll then be able to drag the US into the conflict as it escalates into a regional war. One can only imagine the consequences!

The Sheikh with one ear

We met a Sheikh with only one ear in our visit to the hospital in Damascus.

This man had been abducted by rebel troops, tortured, beaten with rods, had his ear cut off, and was eventually shot in the throat and left for dead. Somehow he survived, but now he is unable to leave the grounds of the hospital as he knows that there are people on the outside waiting to kill him.

How did this man become so hated? He said that the rebel fighters had asked him to bless their troops. He refused. . . .. "

Shias, mass media, and Hezbollah: What lies behind the battle for Qusair http://rt.com/news/qusair-strategic-syria-rebels-550/

By Nadezhda Kevorkova | RT | May 21, 2013

As the Syrian army and [US/Zio-Nazi-backed&Financed Terrorists] fight for control of Qusair, it is necessary to realize why the town is strategically important and vital for Shias on both sides of the border, making it a military and media battleground.

There are far more elements surrounding the situation in Qusair than first meet the eye, RT’s Nadezhda Kevorkova reveals.

The army’s advance to Qusair is a key strategic operation. Qusair is near Homs, which is located on the road connecting Damascus with the Mediterranean seaport. And Qusair itself is the closest town to the Lebanese border. So taking control of it allows the forces to control the Lebanese border with the Shias living on both sides. There is an important high point between Qusair and the Lebanese village Al-Qasr. The Syrian army was forced to leave this area in the fall of 2012, so locals lost their protection. Opposition fighters took over the region and tried to chase out the Shias and take control of the high point – there were severe battles here in April 2013. (I was in Lebanon’s Al-Qasr at the time – the village came under heavy fire). But the [US/Zio-Nazi-backed&Financed Terrorists] lost to the fighters from the Syrian People’s Committees. They were able to hold the high point.

Had the opposition forces won over this rather small and seemingly insignificant area, there would’ve been major consequences. The war would’ve spread to Lebanon, and Hezbollah would’ve been obligated to get involved. Jihadists would’ve been able to get into Syria from Lebanon and attack Hezbollah in southern Lebanon in the Beqaa Valley.

But fighters from the Syrian People’s Committees didn’t let them do it and held the high point.

Thanks to their effort, the government forces were able to deploy troops here and start the Qusair counter-offensive on May 19.

Thirty-thousand Syrian Shias live on the Syrian side of the border (not the Alawites – the Shias). As we know, the border between Syria and Lebanon is relative – the Shias have lived here for ages. When colonial powers drew border lines between countries, they didn’t take the traditional settlement patterns of ethnic groups and communities into account. Many of the local residents have Lebanese passports.

In the fall of 2012, [US/Zio-Nazi-backed&Financed Terrorists] and foreign mercenaries began to sweep Shia villages with fire. They also intimidated people and conducted ethnic cleansing operations. In mixed communities they would go into Shias’ houses telling people to get out, drew “outlaw” signs on the buildings, snipers shot at those who tried to exit these houses. If a family left a home, it was burned down. [US/Zio-Nazi-backed&Financed Terrorists] planned to drive all Shias out of the area near the border.

Opposition propaganda resources in major mass media and social networks have deployed a campaign in the Islamic world aimed at bolstering the idea that all the Shias are apostates – they are not Muslims, not native to these regions and are simply a tool that is used for proliferating Iranian policy across the Middle East. That is why jihad regards killing a Shia as noble. A number of propaganda resources that different sheikhs were using to broadcast anti-Shia sermons, were involved with the campaign.

Moreover, the mass media are thus instilling the minds of Muslims with the idea that all the Shias, including ordinary peasants, are Hezbollah militants, and Hezbollah, in its turn, is a supplement to the ‘dreadful thugs’ of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution.

Such an approach, which is used by the opposition and backed by the world’s major mass media, has a precise analogy.

The scorched-earth policy was first used in the region by the Irgun Jewish settlers in April 1948, when several Palestinian villages were wiped off the map (Deir Yassin is the most well-known). The goal was simple: the news about the massacre of 254 Palestinians – kids, women and old people would terrify all the rest so much, that they would run away voluntarily. The news about such unprecedented atrocities as, for instance, disembowelling pregnant women did strike terror into people: unarmed and unskilled in terms of war 740 thousand Palestinians fled from their home villages becoming refugees. Zionist ideologists still claim that the Palestinians are not native to Palestine and they were invited there as migrant workers, so they are either Bedouins, or nomads, or Gypsies from the Middle East who didn’t have any skills in agriculture and didn’t know how to farm.

This is also the reason that has been driving the mass-media campaign to discredit Hezbollah that has been accused of allegedly fighting against the Syrian people. Video footage and photographs of fallen Hezbollah fighters dating back to the 2006 Lebanon War have been circulated as “proof” that Hezbollah is involved in Syria and suffering losses. Back in 2006, 800 Hezbollah fighters put up resistance to the ground invasion of Lebanon by Israel, and these numbers were officially announced by the party leader Hasan Nasrallah.

I met with families that were forced to flee Syrian villages by the border. These were mostly large families who feared that their women, wives and daughters, would be raped by the opposition fighters and criminals that accompany them. Many also said that it was their strategy to intimidate the local population on purpose to have the houses vacated. Nonetheless many stayed and organized community defense volunteer squads to protect themselves from the [US/Zio-Nazi-backed&Financed Terrorists] forces and mercenaries with arms in their hands.

The battle of Qusair has been of strategic importance, but not only that – Qusair is the only town, however small (with 50,000 people of population ) that had been given up by the government forces in the past – while the rest of the towns in Syria are under the government’s control. Mass-media that are telling their audience that the purpose of the battle of Qusair was “to regain control over the Mediterranean coast” and “re-deploy the government forces to Aleppo” are lying. The army is already in full control of the coast. Last Sunday, the army launched a massive offensive on all transit routes for weapons and supplies coming into the country.

As of today, Qusair is surrounded by the Syrian army, which is also in control of the downtown area. An escape corridor is being kept open for the fleeing population. The militants who fail to use it are contained in town’s quarters.

As for the losses, all the numbers cited are pure speculation and part of the propaganda attack on Syria. For example, the opposition initially reported online that they had killed “90 Hezbollah militants,” yet after a while changed the number to 30, and that’s in addition to the Syrian army’s losses of 20 soldiers reported by the army itself.

2 sources for the same story - one from Syrian State broadcaster SANA - http://sana.sy/eng/337/2013/05/21/483331.htm

    May 21, 2013
DAMASCUS, SANA_ General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces said that our armed forces destroyed an Israeli vehicle [which] entered from the occupied territories and exceeded the cease-fire line towards the village of Bir Ajam.

" The village is located in the liberated area of Syrian territories where there are armed terrorist groups, " the General Command said in a statement issued Tuesday.

" Following that, the Israeli enemy fired two rockets from the occupied site of Tal al-Faras toward one of our sites in al-Zubaydiah site; no casualties reported, " the statement said.

It added that the aggression aims at raising the terrorist groups' collapsed moral due to the painful blows they received at the hands of our armed forces in more than one a place, especially in al-Qsier area.

The General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces said that the blatant aggression confirms again the involvement of the Zionist entity in the ongoing events in Syria and the direct coordination with the armed terrorist gangs.

The statement stressed that any breach or an attempt to violate the state sovereignty will be responded.

Probably REUTERS (published verbatim in the execrable Irish TImes) - http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/middle-east/israel...01279

Zio-Nazi State troops shot at a target across the Syrian frontier today in response to gunfire that struck its forces in the Golan Heights, the Israeli military said.

A statement said a military vehicle was damaged by shots fired from Syria but that there were no injuries. It said that soldiers “returned precise fire”.

Gunfire incidents across the frontier from Syria have recurred in past months during an escalating a civil war there in which rebels have sought to topple president Bashar al-Assad.

Israel’s army radio said today’s was the third consecutive cross-border shooting this week. The Israeli military added in its statement that it viewed these incidents “with concern”.

Israel captured the Golan territory from Syria in a 1967 war and later [illegally] annexed the area. Negotiations aimed at resolving that conflict ran aground in 2000.

Israel has not taken sides in Syria’s internal conflict, but has been worried about the involvement of its Iranian-backed foe, Hizbullah, in the fighting. ------------- (This statement is a blatant lie by Reuters. The Zio-Nazis have CLEARLY taken sides, and only the latest evidence of this is the Zio-Nazi by the illegal unprovoked attack on the Syrian Gov't facilities with a Zio-Nazi missile, little more than a week ago)

========

NOTE: the Reuters "report" is merely a verbatim vomiting up of Zio-Nazi statements regarding this incident - absolutely NO effort to obtain nor tell the Syrian Gov't version of events.

NOTE ALSO: that the Syrian Gov't version paints a very different picture than the Zio-Nazi Version.

The Zio-Nazi version makes absolutely NO MENTION of where the Zio-Nazi Military Vehicle was when it was fired upon, whereas the Syrian Gov't is very specific.

The Zio-Nazis had clearly deliberately infiltrated Syrian Territory, if the Syrian Gov't version is to be believed.

Since the Zio-Nazis refused to mention where there vehicle was, when attacked, it is pretty safe to assume that it was NOT on the Zio-Nazi side of the existing demarcation line.

SO CLEARLY, as per usual, the Zio-Nazis are the ones attempting to create some sort of escalation.

Informative read about the Syrian Armed Forces latest push-back against the US/Zio-Nazi-backed Army of Terrorists in Qusair (Al-Qusayr):

"Besides reams of incriminating documents conclusively demonstrating the connivance of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanese Forces, the Mustaqbal Movement, Turkey, France, the United States and Britain, 76 foreign officers were apprehended in several tunnels"

    "French intelligence officers who spoke North African Arabic;
"Israeli" agents ("katsas"), operatives from Sameer Ja'ja's Lebanese Forces who were trained in the Zionist Entity and who spoke Modern European Settler Hebrew,
Turkish agents working for the MIT,
spies and gun-smugglers who were paid by Sa'ad Hariri, were all CAPTURED ALIVE.

In addition to this, our readers will be delighted to know that several agents from Saudi Arabia and Qatar were also found and are warbling as we write."

"The big issue today is not so much the defeat of the rats in Al-Qusayr, but the participation of Hizbollah in the fighting.

Some reports give the number of dead Hizbollah fighters at17 and some at 28.

The real fact is that the "Rat Opposition" view any Southern Lebanese-accented person as a member of Hizbollah.

We must remember that our National Defense Forces were cobbled together from Syrian, Lebanese, Iraqi and Palestinian volunteers. Many of the fighters inside Al-Qusayr are of Lebanese stock: some are members of the NDF, some members of the Ba'ath Party and some who are long-time residents in Syria who belong to a militia sanctioned by the government.

Don't believe all the nonsense about Hizbollah."

"We can confirm that the following areas of Al-Qusayr cleansed of the rat population:

All East Al-Qusayr, the area of the Township Arena, Western Neighborhoods, area around the Municipal Offices, Cultural Center, Al-Kaneesa (Church), parts of the North Neighborhood and Central Neighborhood and the Roundabout at Al-Ghaita have been decontaminated. More areas are being pest-controlled as we write.

The SAA has found many tunnels and numerous IEDs in residents' homes."

Estimated death toll among the terrorists so far: 1,300.

[Zio-Nazis] "Grant" Oil Rights in Syria to Murdoch and Rothschild. - http://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2013/02/israel-g...hild/" -

[The Zio-Nazis] - http://www.ajc.com/news/ap/energy/israel-gives-ok-for-o...WWC6/ - have "granted" oil exploration rights inside Syria, in the occupied Golan Heights, to Genie Energy. Major shareholders of Genie Energy – which also has interests in shale gas in the United States and shale oil in Israel – include Rupert Murdoch and Lord Jacob Rothschild.

    This from a 2010 Genie Energy - http://www.idt.net/about/press/story.aspx?id=41777 - press release:
Claude Pupkin, CEO of Genie Oil and Gas, commented, “Genie’s success will ultimately depend, in part, on access to the expertise of the oil and gas industry and to the financial markets. Jacob Rothschild and Rupert Murdoch are extremely well regarded by and connected to leaders in these sectors. Their guidance and participation will prove invaluable.”
“I am grateful to Howard Jonas and IDT for the opportunity to invest in this important initiative,” Lord Rothschild said. “Rupert Murdoch’s extraordinary achievements speak for themselves and we are very pleased he has agreed to be our partner. Genie Energy is making good technological progress to tap the world’s substantial oil shale deposits which could transform the future prospects of Israel, the Middle East and our allies around the world.”

For Israel to seek to exploit mineral reserves in the occupied Golan Heights is plainly illegal in international law. Japan was succesfully sued by Singapore before the International Court of Justice for exploitation of Singapore’s oil resources during the second world war. The argument has been made in international law that an occupying power is entitled to opeate oil wells which were previously functioning and operated by the sovereign power, in whose position the occupying power now stands.

But there is absolutely no disagreement in the authorities and case law that the drilling of new wells – let alone fracking – by an occupying power is illegal.

Israel tried to make the same move twenty years ago but was forced to back down after a strong reaction from the Syrian government, which gained diplomatic support from the United States. Israel is now seeking to take advantage of the weakened Syrian state; this move perhaps casts a new light on recent Israeli bombings in Syria.

In a rational world, the involvement of Rothschild and Murdoch in this international criminal activity would show them not to be fit and proper persons to hold major commercial interests elsewhere, and action would be taken. Naturally, nothing of the kind will happen.

A very real threat of thermo-nuclear world war breaking out somewhere in the world exists at the moment . People who point this out tend to get called crazy , which is possibly why the Irish Anti War Movement never gives the risk of human extinction a mention . Even if the chances of a nuclear war happening stood at a thousand to one against, you’d think that any anti war group worth its name would at least raise the possibility as an issue . But you actually never read any anti-nuclear war articles on the Irish Anti war Movement website.

Looking at their site I see that the IAWM were promoting a “Syria Crisis Appeal” fund-raiser last week - an event held at the Sugar Club in support of the efforts of the Oxfam charity in Syria . Oxfam is supporting Western intervention in Syria .

So, the IAWM leaves Oxfam to talk the “humanitarian intervention” talk for them (while occasionally linking to some half-hearted Guardian anti-intervention newspaper article or other) In its turn Oxfam leaves the war talk to Syrian refugees who they are providing aid to . In this Oxfam article for example , a refugee gives visiting Secretary of State Secretary John Kerry “an earful” thus :

“Where is the international community? What are you waiting for? We hope that you will not go back to the States before you find a solution to the crisis. At least impose a no-fly zone or an embargo.
The US, as a superpower, can change the equation in Syria in 30 minutes after you return to Washington.
Mr. Secretary, if the situation remains unchanged until the end of Ramadan this camp will become empty. We will return to Syria and we will fight with knives.” http://firstperson.oxfamamerica.org/2013/07/18/syrian-r...rful/
