Mary Robinson, Inauguration speech as President of Ireland, December 3, 1990 Introduction On the night of the 8 March 1966 a massive explosion was heard in the centre of Dublin and Nelson's Pillar came crashing to the ground in hundreds of tons of rubble. No one was hurt and a stump was all that could be seen of the 157 year old monument. It was not the first time that monuments had been attacked in Ireland and certainly not the last, at least figuratively, with a series of later monuments accruing many derogatory nicknames from the Dublin people. The recent spate of attacks on monuments in the US and the Uk has opened up the debate on the cultural issues they provoke, ranging from those who can't believe the attacks hadn't happened sooner to those who see their destruction as mob vandalism. read full story / add a comment

This gathering is the signature event organized by D.U.S.T (Dublin Unit for Speculative Thought), an art/theory collective recently founded by Michael O'Rourke, Paul Ennis and Fintan Neylan. The media/gov and industry are not telling people that, in fact, fracking is a major 12 county national issue. This would result in rural Ireland being industrialised by the fracking industry and all the dangers and risks that come with this process. This is also a huge cross-border issue, the same company that wish to frack in the north-west, want to begin operations in Fermanagh. Fermanagh is where the anti-fracking campaign will win or lose in Ireland. Everyone on this island has a vested interest in ensuring that fracking does not proceed in Fermanagh. We all have a duty to do something to help stop this destructive industry. read full story / add a comment

A New Independent Irish History Podcast has risen to number 2 in Itunes podcast charts in less than a week to challenge Tommy Tiernan and Hector O hEochagain for the top spot. The podcast series aims to look back at the past 2000 years of Irish history and archaeology. The two most well known Irish hydrocarbon deposits: the Corrib field and the Dunquin prospect are collectively worth at least E400 billion euros. They contain around 33trillion cubic feet of gas and between 2.5 and 4 billion barrels of oil. The gas in the Corrib belong to Shell, Statoil and Marathon and the Dunquin prospect is totally controlled by Exxon Mobil and Providence . We will end up buying back our oil and gas and they will be charged pitiful tax rates as they can write all exploration and construction costs over the past twenty-five years against tax.
