As unrest continues in Iran, Yassamine Mather writes on the divisions within the ruling Theocracy and how the "Reformists" fear that that the revolt will result in genuine revolution. Full text at link. More than two weeks after the demonstrations of December 27 2009, the political repercussions of these events, and the reaction to the anger and radicalism of the protesters, continue. Clearly now no-one, from the government to the ‘reformists’, to the revolutionary opposition, has any doubt that the current protests are no longer about who should be the ‘president’ of the Islamic Republic, but represent a serious challenge to the very existence of the religious state. read full story / add a comment

After he allegations that he had been having an extra marital affair with Waterford PR executive Monica Leech, Martin Cullen said some of his colleagues did not want to be associated with him. The former Progressive Democrat and current Fianna Fáil TD claimed that that his children had been subject to bullying and He said he had felt like running down Kildare Street shouting: 'I am innocent. I am innocent'. He described the experience as being like 'waking up every day and being raped'. Monica Leech received a payment of 1.9 million euro from a newspaper in libel damages after remarks made on RTE about her relationship with Cullen were repeated in print. RTE settled with her for a payment of €250,000. The Minister lodged proceedings separately but has not yet acted on them. By contrast, the average payment from the redress board (which was to compensate people for, in some cases, literally being raped every day) was €60,000. read full story / add a comment

As predictions for the death toll from the Haitian earthquakes rise over 200,000, ABC News have reported that planes carrying medical equipment and relief supplies are having to compete with soldiers for the valuable slots at Port-au-Prince airport which was taken over by the US military after the quake. Since the start of the great anti-slavery republican insurrection nearly 220 years ago, Haiti has been presented as a dangerous place incapable of running its own affairs and requiring foreign intervention. Yet the reality is its people were the first enslaved population to deliver themselves from slavery and also carried out what was only the third successful republican insurrection on the planet. The threat of this good example was rewarded with centuries of invasion, blackmail, the robbery of Haiti's natural resources and the impoverishment of its people. This articles summarizes that history of intervention and the resistance to it in order to put into context what is happening in Haiti after the quake read full story / add a comment ![]()

They have been surrounded since and under siege, unable to leave. They have had to resort to tunnelling into Egypt and smuggling basic food stuffs and medicines. We just thought that we had to start a campaign to remind people locally of their plight” said Patsy Doyle, who organised the protest. read full story / add a comment
