This year the Iranian government's repression of workers has started before the 1st of May with the arrest of a number of labour activists in the last week of April . Two of the leading members of the newly found 'Free union of Iranian workers' ( who despite its unfortunate choice of name has declared its intentions to work within the confines of the current regime and avoid 'political' opposition to the regime) were arrested ahead of plans for a May Day demonstration in Kurdistan. The government followed the arrests by banning unofficial May Day celebrations in various parks in Tehran. read full story / add a comment

The PKK were included in 2002 on the list of terrorist organisations held by the EU. It's a long list. But the decision has now been anulled by the second highest judicial bench in Europe which sits in Luxembourg. There are complex (as always) reasons for this. Without going into it too much, & thus distracting you from reading the judgement in its entirety, I'd just mention the non-desirability of seeing a post-US occupied Iraq divided between Turkey and Iran after the former argued they were containing the PKK terrorists. read full story / add a comment ![]()

An member of the WSM and the Turkish anarchist organization AKI look at the crisis in Turkey, a crisis pushed further into the spotlight since this article was written by the threats to invade Iraqi Kurdistan. Turkish politics are full of contradictions and paradoxical situations. But the bottom line is that both the “democratic” political Islam as well as the “authoritarian” army are elite alternatives opposed to the basic interests of workers, that have agreed on the fundamentals and will likely keep agreeing in maintaining the repressive political structures of the Kemalist state, read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather in an article published in the Weekly Worker (25 Oct 07) deals with the growing threat of war against Iran. She also analyses developments amongst the Kurds and highlights how the Iraqi PUK are betraying other Kurds. If anyone is in any doubt about the level of the threat of war against Iran, I suggest they read the text of a speech by Tony Blair comparing “Iran’s extremism” to “rising fascism in the 1920s and 1930s” (Times Oct 19). Quiet clearly Blair has spent so much time in Israel that he repeats like a parrot the most stupid utterances of Israeli politicians - all this in line with the US administration’s plans for possible military attack against Iran and paving the way for more extensive sanctions. Worst of all for Iran’s leaders, Russian president Vladimir Putin, in Tehran for talks with the theocratic regime gave a stark warning that Russia will not oppose further sanctions and military strikes against Iran, unless it stopped its enrichment of nuclear-grade uranium. read full story / add a comment

Turkish Special Forces recently carried out a covert killing of Kurdish Village Guards, state sponsored miltias. This was blamed on the Kurdish Freedom Fighters of the PKK and publicised worldwide. But the truth is that this massacre was carried out by the Turkish authorities, as a pre text to a full scale planned invasion of Kurdistan that is being discussed by Turkish authorities tonight and will be presented to the Turkish parliament tomorrow. read full story / add a comment ![]()

It is unbelievable to hear the news about a 12 years old girl, brutally killed by her father because he suspected her of having a relationship with their 24-year-old male neighbour. Amina was killed on the 5th May 2007 by her own father in their house opposite the Ministry of Human Rights in Erbil, Kurdistan. Amina’s father is said to be a PUK military official who has not been charged or even punished for killing his daughter up until now. It is said that Amina begged her father not to kill her, and that she kissed her father’s feet twice for mercy. He was cruel enough to ignore his 12 years old daughter’s innocent plea and killed her in cold blood. read full story / add a comment

travelled to the Kurdish area of Iraq to study and observe women’s activities there at close range for the first time in 2000. Then last summer I travelled to this region again to visit the non-governmental organisations of Iraq. When I arrived and came across the activities of Kurdish women, it was a very familiar environment for me, since I had done thorough research on Kurdish women in the recent decades, and also due to my familiarity with the NGO activities of Kurdish women in Turkey. In the Sulaymaniyah region of Iraqi Kurdistan I investigated eight women’s NGOs in detail. read full story / add a comment

In Iraq amid chaos, sectarianism, a rise in tribalism, and the enslavement of women, one can think of a constitution which is being written only as a document - or some how an agreement between the political players in Iraq. The constitution is only a clear indication of power sharing, pleasing each party's desire to practice their policies, and practices outlined by law. When reading the constitution, from the preambles to the end, I thought it is just written in a patriarchal, religious and tribal language, and this is the political mixture of the parties we have in power in the so called “parliament”. It does not represent anything to do with Iraqi people, and their aspiration for freedom and equality. read full story / add a comment

Houzan Mahmoud, Representative of the Organisation of Women's Freedom in Iraq has been threatened by Islamic Fundamentalists. On February 26, 2007, Houzan received an e-mail signed by Ansar al-Islam, the notoriously brutal jihadist group based in Kurdistan/Iraq. The death threat, delivered via e-mail, read: "With the permission of Great God, we will kill you either in Iraq or in London by the middle of March, because you are campaigning against Islam. You should be sent to God for punishment." read full story / add a comment |
