This catholic worker initiative flows from last December's "Witness Against Torture" walk through Cuba to Guantanamo Bay, nonviolent direct actions at U.S. Mission to the U.N. (NYC) and White House (DC) and a gathering gof 350 catholic Workers from 55 communities in North America and Europe (Oct, Iowa, USA). catholic Workers will hold vigil at their local Cathedrals Sunday Dec 10 (Human Rights Day) and then converge on Washingotn DC for nonviolent direct action on Jan. 11th (5th anniversary of opening of Guantanamo military prison). read full story / add a comment ![]()

Given that tens of thousands of Irish people were shipped into slavery, isnt it strange that Ireland has no day remembering them? I dont know of a single monument to the victims of slavery in Ireland. Perhaps someone can let me know if they know of one. As far as I know, even the Republican Movement fails to commemorate the tens of thousands of innocents sold into slavery from Ireland. A number of serious anti-war trials are underway around the globe. Margaret Jones and Paul Milling enter the last days of their trial for disabling vehicles specifically designed to reload the U.S. B52 Bombers that were based at Fairford (England) in '03 and were ging to drop napalm, cluster bombs and fuel explosives over Iraq. Meanwhile in the U.S. Fr, Carl Kabat OMI (who has already served 15 years imprisonment for nonviolent resistance),Vietnam vet/catholic worker Michael Walli and ex-soldier had no trouble finding WMD. they looked in North Dakota,USA, rather than wasting their time lookng for them in Iraq! Acquitted Pit Stop Ploughshares Damien Moran was questioned briefly by a Garda at Shannon Airport as Condi Rice took of this afternoon. Condi touched down in Shannon during her busy schedule of organisning U.S. wars around the planet. On Feb 3rd. 2003, the Pit Stop Ploughshares 5 carried out an act of nonviolent disarmament on a U.S. Navy War plane at Shannon Airport. In July '06, the five catholic Workers were found not guilty of "US2.5million criminal damage without lawful excuse" by the unanimous verdict of a jury - the conscience of the commuity - at Dublin's Four Courts. read full story / add a comment

The much celebrated and surveilled Pit Stop Ploughshares are having Farewell Drinx at Brogans on Dame St. from 8 pm on Thursday night August 3rd. Two of the Pit Stops will leave Ireland soont o contiue the journey in nonviolence and seeking justice. Two will stay on to demilitarise Shannon Warport. This group that came together for the first time 8 days before their historic act of nonviolent disarmament at Shannon against deployment for the U.S. invasion of Iraq, they hung in as a nonviolent resistance community for 3 1/2 years and three trials. Former RC priest ,and long time catholic worker, is presently serving a 6 month sentence for a nonviolent trespass at Offcut Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. Offcut is headquarters of what was once called the U.S. Strategic Air Command. This is Frank's 7th. 6 month stint for nonviolent resistance at Offcut AFB. Frank also did time for a (1990's) Plowshares action on a B-52 Bomber at Andrews Air Force Base. (By happenstance, Amy Goodman was on site and covered the action for "Democracy Now"). Although Frank is presently a prisoner of the Federal Government he spent the first 2 months of this sentence in overcrowded County Jails (There ar e now 2.3 million prople locked up in the U.S.) Frank is now ensconsed in Yankton Fed Pen (once rated by Penthouse 'zine as one of the 5 easiest places to do time in the U.S. system. read full story / add a comment
