Stan, the storm after Rita has killed at least 150 people in Central America last night. The countries and areas affected include - Guatemala, San Salvador, Chiapas in Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua. El Salvador has just seen its largest Volcano erupt and is recording the most deaths. 32,045 evacuees are presently in 309 temporary shelters. The rain is not stopping movement is very difficult. Almost since i came to live in Catalonia, people have spoken about their "estatut" the reform of the relationship between their local and historical government and that of the Spanish state established under the constitution agreed at the transition to democracy. & i've done my best to explain the background and contemporary issues to readers in Ireland, because for many reasons it ought interest them. Many previously would have thought constitutional issues in Spain stopped at the Basque. This morning the deputies in the Catalan Parliament, standing up one by one and gave their final "yes" or "no" to each article, to end this process in a public and historic manner & enter the video mp3 files of telly. No deaths nor Wars nor soldiers in uniform or balaclava read a proclamation. Its an example to follow. I hope these fine words will build a fine society. Today Spain and Morocco met at the highest level available to them to discuss as a matter of urgency, the events of the last month and week. hundreds of migrants of sub-saharan origin attempt to cross the frontier between Morocco and the Spanish specifically in the tiny enclave of Melilla. 5 migrants have died (3 on the moroccan side 2 on the spanish side) in the last attempt which saw an estimated 500 migrants try to jump the Melilla wall on Wednesday of this week. Doctors without frontiers claim 66% of the injuries sustained by the migrants resulted from their experiences on the Moroccan side. Its the Chinese and the internet again. The Chinese love the internet, their state doesn't. & in the last days their state has updated its rules and regulations on internet use and made quite a list of transgressions. They are also asking the public to help information departments at all levels to supervise news sites & report them if the stories are unhealthy. "A new regulation on online news services was issued jointly on Sunday by the State Council Information Office (SCIO) and the Ministry of Information Industry. Under this regulation, online news sites that publish fabricated content, pornography or violence face severe punishment or even closure." read full story / add a comment

It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “upcoming issues” and looking back at "how history was made". Today is september 25 of 9th month. It is also the 20th day of Elul, year of Moses 5765 It is also the 20 th day of Shaban, 1426 years since the Hegira. Nigeria produces 2.4 million barrels per day, 200,000 more barrels than have just been cancelled from the production of the USA. Understandably therefore any threat made to the Oil fields is big news. the "Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force" (NDPVF) yesterday made just that threat, if their leader Moujahid Dkubo-Asari arrested on the 20th of September is not released within 48 hours. Chevron have closed platforms and evacuated workers as have Shell - Nigeria's production is down 19,000 barrels according to british sources 26,000 barrels according to other sources. read full story / add a comment

As you know this summer the Zapatistas decided to form the "peaceful civic, nationalist, leftist and anti-capitalist" movement of Mexico and will participate in next years elections, and thus are preparing their federal tour in early 2006. On the other side of Mexican politics, last wednesday the chief of Mexico's anti-narcotics police died along with many other high ranking officials in a helicopter crash. The mice were genetically engineered to carry a copy of human chromosome 21, a string of about 250 genes. the organisation "lunar Republic" have just started the long process of internationalising their proclamation and ideals, their web site has just launched and might prove a good umbrella or maybe not... For many years now I have lamented the lack of a "space.indymedia", we have added biotech to the global list, we have seen many initiatives on satelite technology, but the issues of space, and the use and misuse of space exploration and speculation are yet to be drawn together by us. read full story / add a comment

Simon Wiesenthal has died in Vienna at 96 years of age. "When history looks back I want people to know the Nazis weren't able to kill millions of people and get away with it." Wiesenthal survived the Holocaust ( he had been held in Mauthaussen along with hundreds of thousands of other jews and the spanish republican prisoners) but never returned to his career as architect, instead he became the most effective and well known hunter of nazi war criminals. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday saw quite a lot of near panic amongst a certain class of political leader in Israel, which resulted from the near arrest of Doron Almog, former commander of the IDF in the gaza strip. A private law suit brought on behalf of 900 Palestinian children meant the moment he got off his plane, he was to be arrested. & the UK Home Office weren't going to get in the way. The implications are huge. The facts are:- A London magistrate issued a warrant for the arrest of Doron Almog over his role in a 2002 bombing raid that killed 15 Palestinians, many of them children. An Israeli peace movement (Yesh Gvul) http://www.yeshgvul.org/english/ is also compiling a case with London lawyers against chief of staff Dan Halutz, and his predecessor, Moshe Yaalon, over their role in the same operation. read full story / add a comment

President Bush junior is presently the most unpopular occupant of the White House since modern polling methods began. Yesterday he announced his "marshall plan" for the gulf coast on prime time US national TV networks. Today he spoke again to the nation, from the national cathedral in Washington. The speech has already been hailed as his finest ever. & it only ended 15 minutes ago. The fires which killed over 30 people mostly children in Paris this summer, brought impetus to the French migrant support groups, and housing organisations. Chirac expressed shock and horror. De Villepin's government promised action and a "census" of slum housing where France's african migrants live. Pretty soon after the police moved into forceably evict the houses on the census list, arresting those within, processing them for deportation and sending them off to the migrant detention centres "for their own good". This summer flooding really came to Europe. Almost 50 died, a very small figure which reflected community awareness and good municipal responses. But all scientific evidence now suggests that these incidents are best to be considered as part of a new pattern related to global climate change. We are not dealing with the causes in the short-term. We are thus dealing with effects which are long term. Proverbially the time to put that first stitch has passed now.- We now face forest fires and flooding of the largest river valleys in summer and extreme storms with tornados in spring and summer. read full story / add a comment

as Bush remarked yesterday when linking Pearl Harbour to September 11, and the Iraqi and Japanese constitutions, "The document they have produced protects fundamental human freedoms, including freedom for women, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of conscience, and freedom of expression". Over a 1000 citizens of Baghdad of the Shi'ite faith assembled for an annual holiday today, and after several events, stampeded in panic as the chinese whisper spread theough the crowd that kamikaze bomber was amongst them. Last nights fire in Paris which killed 17 people most of whom were children is just one in a series of incidents which bring attention to the appaling conditions mostly african migrants are being housed in. The group "DAL (droit au logement)" estimates 50,000 people in the "migrants, illegal migrants, asylum seekers, refugee" category are housed dangerously in the city. read full story / add a comment

Eric Rudolph was sentenced in Atlanta today to four consecutive life sentences as well as 120 years in prison for three bombings in Atlanta and one in Birmingham, Alabama between 1996 and 1998. Rudolph, a right wing extremist bombed the Atlanta Olympic games in 1996, killing 1 and injuring 111 with a nail bomb.
