![]() ![]() The ' Knowledge Economy' is something that many of us cannot get our heads round, but it goes hand in hand with the idea of the Meritocracy and Computer Dependence so beloved of the people who cannot be arsed getting out of bed and doing a day's work. It is high dependence stuff and means in real terms, preparing kids for tech lives and ignoring humanistic education. OECD is criticising our Government for under-investment in our kids futures (again), with one of the lowest spends in the EU on our kid's futures. Personally I think it is lazy complacency that allows Ministers to underspend on National and State Schools. We don't invest in future jobs for the kids. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday a student of general "leftiness" tried to squeeze a ranting bit of information & polemic into a question being put to US senator John Kerry during a student debate in Florida University. Nothing he said was particularly revolutionary despite his obvious passion. He affirmed the belief that Greg Pallast is a good bloke, Kerry had really won the 2004 election, GW Bush gets blowjobs, 911 is upsetting and then just as the good senator had asked him to get to the point and ask the question, the young man uttered the word "impeachment" & then got carried to the back of the room and tasered by the university security guards.the website of Taser international offers a t-shirt with the slogan "so...... you weren't doing anything - let's go to the video!". That's exactly where we going dear readers. read full story / add a comment

Some months back, people from the Dublin community gardens collective secured the legal use of a space on South circular road, across the road from the White Heather factory behind which the original "Dolphins barn commmunity garden" was started 2 years ago on squatted land but that was later evicted. They have been busy over the past while, quietly and happily digging away, gently making a beautiful social space which is an example of what a more sustainable community or city looks like. There is currently a lovely new addition to the old Dublin 8 street, just after the Mosque coming from the city centre: a line of very colorful sunflowers now stand out against the green of the veggies and flowers growing behind in the SCR plot. The collective have at least another 2 years in this space and hopefully things will keep on growing so that this garden turns into a permanent green space for the city. All newcomers are people interested are welcome. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Some interesting developments in Nepal. The Maoist ministers have resigned from the Cabinet. It looks as if the Maoists have decided on mass protests rather than resuming armed struggle at this stage. The CPN (Maoist) has decided to quit the government as eight-party leaders failed to forge consensus on its demands. Maoist ministers submitted their resignation letters to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala as soon as the meeting of top leaders of four major ruling allies ended in a deadlock. The leaders had been engaged in hectic parleys from early morning today. read full story / add a comment

This conference was organised by the Irish branch of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil to bring together people from government and the industry as well as some of those working to alleviate the problems. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons Cork Shell to Sea has so far been unable to gain entry but stimulated by the ideas presented on the ASPO website and our own experinces we put this leaflet together that we think raises points that anyone working in this area would do well to consider. This is the text, we plan to distribute this leaflet outside the conference later today and to write a further article in the next day or two. read full story / add a comment

While Ógra would never dream of violating Dublin City Councils rules on postering and such, or the inalienable right to private property, the cornerstone of this glorious state, we really must commend the young republicans who in support of our movement have attempted to remind the people of Dublin of the revolutionary history of their city. 16 Moore St. the final HQ of the Provisional Government of The Irish Republic in Easter week 1916 now represents the minority of the Parnell Street area which has not been revitalised by the "new" Irish. It lies in disrepair, shut up and until recently anonymous to the thousands who pass it everyday. Since named as a protected structure by DCC in 2005 which halted an attempt by its owner to demolish it, 16 Moore St. has remained untouch and unopen. This is a great shame as it holds the potential for a focal point in what is now a very vibrant part of the city. read full story / add a comment ![]()
