Surely a pet dog cannot be taken from someone purely because he is a certain breed, especially if he is under proper control and has not done anything wrong. If Dublin City Council can get away with this unfair proposition then what will come next?. This situation must constitute discrimination at the very least. The very idea that DCC are responsible for dogs who bite people on council property is wrong surely?. It was my understanding that owners are responsible for the actions of their pets. If a person falls off a ladder in a Council house are the Council responsible for that too Besides being indiscriminate , this proposition is unenforceable. Where will the dogs be taken to and by whom?. Who will rehome them??? How long will they be kept and where? There is already legislation already in place against dog fighting, if this law was enforced we would not have this problem. read full story / add a comment

“Every woman deserves to have her mother in the delivery room with her” I remember reading these words on rollercoaster.ie years ago from a young scared Irish woman due with her first baby. Her heartfelt plea for help…her desperation for ANY suggestion ….of ANY possible way that she could persuade her maternity hospital to make the exception to the rule and allow her mother and husband in with her for the labour and birth. Likewise I remember the replies of other women…women who have gone through it before…women who dripped with cynicism because they too would have liked this choice but knew what her outcome would be. The pain, confusion and fear of that sad, sad post have stayed with me over the years. Unfortunately it looks like very little has changed for women in some areas of Ireland . While many maternity units around the country are receptive of additional birthing partners and Doulas, the Dublin hospitals remain unresponsive. AIMS Ireland has decided to look deeper into this issue. read full story / add a comment

Reacting to the announcement that loyalist Willie Frazier is to meet with senior Gardai in 26-County government buildings on June 21 to seek permission to hold a loyalist march or rally in Dublin, possibly in July, Republican Sinn Féin pledged to oppose such an event. A previous attempt to force a loyalist march through O’Connell St in February 2006 had to be abandoned due to the scale of the protest. read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War is organising a “99 Red Balloon Peace Event” at Galway’s Spanish Arch at noon on Sunday 24th June, the same day as the Salthill Air Show. Last year the Galway peace group ran a similar event, which ended in controversy when the Gardaí burst most of the red balloons. At the time the authorities claimed that the warplanes would be endangered if the balloons “collided” with them. Such claims were greeted with incredulity and the Gardaí were left with what resembled egg on their faces. read full story / add a comment

Activists from the Shell to Sea campaign are attempting to block lorries removing peat by chaining themselves to the lorries attempting to enter the site at Bellanaboy, Erris, County Mayo. A large group of animal rights activists protested at the St. Stephen’s Day meet of the Waterford Foxhounds in Tramore Co. Waterford. The annual protest was organised by the Association of Hunt Saboteurs and BadgerWatch Ireland. Protesters held banners condemning foxhunting and called for a ban on bloodsports. Speaking at the event, John Tierney, Campaigns Director, AOHS, said: ““Animal rights organisations intend making animal rights an election issue in the 2007 general election.” read full story / add a comment

Last friday's events in Rossport were a clear example of the brutality of the state; non-violent protesters were viciously assaulted with fists, boots and batons. It is important to remember however, that these events are part of the same logic that saw five men imprisoned for 92 days last year for refusing to allow Shell to construct a dangerous pipeline through their land. read full story / add a comment

A large crowd of Ogra Shinn Fein activists organised and took part in a direct action at the Statoil service station in Newcastle this lunch-time (Thursday), closing the station for buisness for an hour. The protest was attended by activists from the Socialist Party and Shell to Sea.OSF spokesperson Caitlin Ni Ruanaidh said of the action, "We mounted a picket today to express our solidarity with the beleaguered community in Rossport, and to raise awareness of the theft of our natural resources." read full story / add a comment

The Shell to Sea campaign condemns the ongoing co-ordinated campaign to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to Shell’s project in Mayo. On last Friday, Gardai employed excessive violence against peaceful deminstrators causing scores of injuries and a number of hospitalisations. Government Ministers and the leader of Fine Gael have deliberately sought to create the impression that the campaign is orchestrated by sinister ‘outside’ forces. Over the last two weeks the Shell to Sea campaign has been subjected to a coordinated assault designed to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to Shell’s project in Mayo. On the one hand, a large force of Gardai has been deployed to facilitate Shell’s resumption of work. Garda policing of local protests has become increasingly aggressive and is adding to tensions on the ground. Numerous incidents have been logged by monitors and will be pursued in due course. On the other hand, a concerted campaign has been waged by some sections of the media alleging that our campaign is centred on intimidation and effectively run by subversive elements. read full story / add a comment

Sinn Féin Natural Resources spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has called on people to support solidarity protests against Shell facilities across Ireland in the wake of further clashes and reports of assaults by Gardaí on protestors at the Bellanaboy site. In a strongly worded statement, Deputy Ferris accused Shell of reliance on ‘dodgy polling, brute force and scab labour’ as proof of how isolated their position is and said the company is prepared to ‘lie, cheat and intimidate’ to get its way. read full story / add a comment

The Alliance for Animal Rights is pleased to learn that Circus Sydney have retired the Ailing African Elephant Max to a safari style Park in Germany. This Elephant has been the subject of controversy since he started touring this season. He was one of two elephants at Circus Sydney that animal Rights Campaigners reported to Gardai over the last few months as in need of urgent medical attention for a hind leg injury . read full story / add a comment

The Captive Animals Protection Society Ireland (CAPS) has slammed the DSPCA for its imcompetence following the society’s failure to secure an x-ray and Veterinary treatment for Max the male African Elephant in Circus Sydney, who has been removed from Ireland despite being the subject of a Garda Investigation under the 1911 anti –cruelty legislation. Max who had a severely deformed hind leg which was clearly causing him distress was forced to perform in the ring nightly. This had prompted floods of calls to SPCAs throughout the country since the start of the circus season. read full story / add a comment |
