amnesty International fears the wave of arrests of civil society activists in Iran is intensifying after the leading lawyer and women's human rights activist Shadi Sadr was violently arrested in Tehran this morning on her way to Friday prayers. She lost her headscarf and coat in the ensuing struggle but managed briefly to escape. She was quickly recaptured and beaten with batons before being taken away in the car to an unknown location. read full story / add a comment

international / worker & community struggles and protests / press release Friday June 26, 2009 16:47 by Liz Chinchen
Workers from across London will be giving up their lunch hour today (Friday) to attend a protest outside the Iranian Embassy against its Government's harsh treatment of trade unionists, something which is feared will get even worse in the wake of the current street demonstrations. Long before the current crackdown against Iranians disputing the recent presidential election result, the Government had been harassing and intimidating trade unionists. In Iran members of independent trade unions are frequently beaten up or thrown into prison. And there are concerns that attacks on trade unionists will increase as protesters look for other ways of demonstrating against the regime by taking part in strikes and other work-related protests read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea campaigner, Maura Harrington was released from Mountjoy Women’s Prison this morning after serving 28 days. Maura had been imprisoned for allegedly slapping a member of Garda Siochana, a charge which she denies. Maura proceeded from Mountjoy Women’s Prison to Dail Eireann, where she was accompanied into the Dail by Aengus O Snodaigh TD and Martin Ferris TD. Maura met with press outside Dail Eireann where an impromptu press conference had been called. Maura called for an end to the gas give away: “Our pension fund was given to bail out the banks, and we now stand to gain nothing from our own natural gas and oil resources. The government is putting pressure on the people of Ireland today with this new Budget, but the oil and gas companies are feeling no pressure.” read full story / add a comment

In Ennis district court today Thursday 13 November, Judge Mangan adjourned a charge of obstructing/impeding an airport fire officer, brought against the former UN peacekeeper and anti-torture campaigner, Edward Horgan, of Castletroy, Co. Limerick. Having heard that Horgan’s summons cited the wrong act and did not come as stated from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the case was adjourned to 8 January. Horgan went to the airport on 18 June 2008, on a tip-off that Learjet N54PA was due to arrive from Florida via Newfoundland. Flight logs showed that N54PA had landed several times, including 3 June 2008, at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Horgan walked into the security office to demand that the aircraft be searched for prisoners, and its crew questioned about recent and past activities, and insisted on remaining while the plane was being refuelled in order to confirm whether Gardai searched the aircraft or not. read full story / add a comment

Scandal of Justice Continues: New Extension of Remand in Custody for Austrian Animal Protectionists Because the suspects refused to renounce animal protection, their remand in custody was extended on the grounds that there remains the risk they will perpetrate criminal offences! The District Court of Wiener Neustadt extended the remand in custody of the ten animal protectionists for a further two months today. Even after inspection of the numerous computers and photos that have been confiscated, not one single substantiating charge has been added and many of the existing charges that made the strong impression of having been fabricated have already been dropped by the Chief Public Prosecutor. Nevertheless, the authorities insist on further remanding the animal protectionists in custody. read full story / add a comment
