"Argos announced profits in 2006 exceeding 8.1 billion euro whilst profits for the first half of this year are up 50%. Despite this Argos are refusing workers a 10 % pay rise, which would bring hourly rates to 9.90 euro. The cost of importing strike breakers is greater for Argos than the pay increase sought by the workers. According to Concern and other international and national NGOs, there is an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in South Central Somalia. Tens of thousands of people are currently fleeing violence in Mogadishu adding to the up to 335,000 people already needing immediate lifesaving assistance in Mogadishu and the Shabelle regions. NGOs cannot respond effectively to the crisis because access and security are deteriorating dramatically at a time when needs are increasing. The international community and all involved parties have a responsibility to protect civilians, to allow the delivery of aid and to respect humanitarian space and the safety of humanitarian workers. read full story / add a comment

The Minister for education Catroina Ruane has stated publicly that the current offer on the table to settle the Classroom Assistants dispute is valued at £45 million. This is in direct contradiction to the statements by the education Boards that the offer is valued at £40.2 million. These opposing statement have caused great confusion amongst parents and staff. NIPSA is calling for transparency in the job evaluation process and demanding access to the costings for the job evaluation process. read full story / add a comment

After many days fighting a lone battle to defend the education system. Classroom assistants took the magnanamous step to suspend their highly successful strike action to allow management to finally engage in meaningful negotiations. If anyone took this to be a climb down or retreat they were very much mistaken. As the negotiations reach a critical stage the message is loud and clear. "Settle this now or face more of the same" NIPSA's classroom assistant's call on every decent trade unionist to show solidarity with them in their time of struggle. They are fighting not only to maintain but to improve the standard of education for all children in this provence. Irish, German and Cuban communists, as well as the many communists from abroad now living and working in Ireland, will come together next week to celebrate the 1917 October Revolution in Russia. This year is the 40th anniversary of the murder of Che Guevara by the CIA in Bolivia. Che was in Bolivia trying to assist the revolution taking place there when he was captured and shot, his last words apparently being “Shoot, coward, you’re going to kill a man”. Che Guevara’s legacy and the struggle for socialism in Latin America today will by discussed at a upcoming forum on the 21st of July in Limerick. Many family pets are at risk of being destroyed following the decision by Dublin City Council to ban all dogs listed under the Control of Dogs (Restriction of Certain Dogs) Regulations, 1991. ANVIL Ireland has condemned this move. Spokesperson, Miriam Anderson stated “this decision appears to have been made in the absence of any informed discussion with rescue or welfare groups. The fact that Dublin City Council has referred to all of these breeds as “dangerous dogs” implies a total lack of understanding of both the breeds in question and the existing legislation”. read full story / add a comment

“Every woman deserves to have her mother in the delivery room with her” I remember reading these words on rollercoaster.ie years ago from a young scared Irish woman due with her first baby. Her heartfelt plea for help…her desperation for ANY suggestion ….of ANY possible way that she could persuade her maternity hospital to make the exception to the rule and allow her mother and husband in with her for the labour and birth. Likewise I remember the replies of other women…women who have gone through it before…women who dripped with cynicism because they too would have liked this choice but knew what her outcome would be. The pain, confusion and fear of that sad, sad post have stayed with me over the years. Unfortunately it looks like very little has changed for women in some areas of Ireland . While many maternity units around the country are receptive of additional birthing partners and Doulas, the Dublin hospitals remain unresponsive.
