Akbayan Partylist condemns the cold-blooded murder of its fisherfolk leader Honorio “ Norvict” Baculao in Bohol. Ka Norvict, as he is fondly called by comrades in the civil society community and social movements, had just attended a municipal assembly of civil society groups and basic sectors in Getafe, Bohol on Tuesday when he was shot in the head by a lone gunman. WikiLeaks released the secret negotiated draft text for the entire TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) Intellectual Property Rights Chapter. The TPP is the largest-ever economic treaty, encompassing nations representing more than 40 per cent of the world’s GDP. The WikiLeaks release of the text comes ahead of the decisive TPP Chief Negotiators summit in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 19-24 November 2013. The chapter published by WikiLeaks is perhaps the most controversial chapter of the TPP due to its wide-ranging effects on medicines, publishers, internet services, civil liberties and biological patents. In the afternoon of the 2 November, the peasant leader César García, president of the community association (Junta de Acción Comunal) of Cajon La Leona, was killed in cold blood by a shot to the head as he returned to his homestead with his wife and son [1]. García had become visible through his participation in the Environmental and Rural Committee of Cajamarca for the defence of life, water and food (Comité Ambiental y Campesino de Cajamarca por la Defensa de la Vida, el Agua y el Alimento), an organisation which has been leading the community´s struggle against the large-scale extractive project La Colosa. This open-cast mine has been denounced in Tolima because of the disastrous impact it would have on the community and the environment. The community of Tolima has expressed its rejection of the project through a series of massive demonstrations in defence of water and life, as well as through a popular consultation which took place in the municipality of Piedras on 28 July. On that occasion, 99.2% of the population rejected the mega-mine, with participation of approximately 60% of the electorate [2]. read full story / add a comment

The labeling "Responsibly Farmed" on farmed salmon in Irish Supermarket Chains is a complete contradiction. Why you may ask? In the nutshell, science has proven the negative impacts Salmon Farms have on native species of juvenile sea trout and salmon. It is far from Responsible to place a salmon farm on any coastline in the direct migratory path of native species. Salmon farms have proven to be connected to the mass decline of sea trout and salmon in many river systems around the world. Lets not forget the famous sea trout collapse in Connemara after they placed salmon farms along the West Coast of Ireland back in the 80's. read full story / add a comment

This year 2013,the year of the 100th anniversary of the Great Dublin Lock Out of 1913, also marks the 36th anniversary of the murder of Socialist Republican Seamus Costello. Seamus was murdered by anti Working Class forces in Dublin on October 5, 1977. A great loss to the fight for Socialism and Republicanism. read full story / add a comment

Ireland could and should have a Universal Pension for everyone over 65. it could be paid for principally by standard rating the current tax-break for private pensions. More than 80% of benefit of the current tax break goes to the 20% with highest earnings. A Universal Pension would be simpler, fairer and more just as well as being sustainable in the decades ahead. No existing pensioner would lose out and many would experience an increase in the Universal Pension. In particular, those adults aged 66 years and older, in respect of whom reduced payments are now made due to their status as ‘Qualified Adults’, would receive a Universal Pension in their own right. read full story / add a comment

Eight campaigners are due to appear in Belmullet District Court this Wednesday (11th Sept) charged in relation to protesting against the Corrib Gas project. Included among the eight campaigners are both Shell to Sea spokespersons Maura Harrington and Terence Conway along with Pobail Chill Chomáin spokesperson John Monaghan. Galway, August 22, 2013 - On Saturday, August 24th, at 2:00 PM, animal rights activists will be on Grafton street, Dublin as part of a global day of protests for animal rights. They will hold synchronized street theater at several locations, including McDonald’s, for its sale of animals as food, and Bernardo's furs. Strong visuals are expected.
