This talk is based on a book scheduled to be published in June called "Sins of the Father: Tracing the Decisions That Shaped the Irish Economy", which is an elaboration on a series of blog posts he's written over the past three years which deal directly with this subject, on the popular DublinOpinion.com blog and Irish Left Review, as well as the journal, Look Left.

Exploring attitudes to abortion
(11:30 - 12:30 Connolly Room)
A workshop by Choice Ireland on social attitudes around this perennial issue in practically the only country in the EU to still legally deny women's reproductive rights.

Introduction to Anarchism
(13:00 - 14:00 Theatre)

He has written a number of books on the politics of anarchist-communism, including "The Abolition of the State" and will be talking on the subject of his latest book "Anarchism & Socialism: Reformism or Revolution?". He will discuss the two main trends in anarchism today, revolutionary, class-struggle, anarchist-communism and reformist, alternate-institution-building, alternate-lifestylist, anarchism. Covering key issues such as anarchist organizations, the question of power, the nature of a post-capitalist society, the nature of revolution.

Palestine Today

(14:30 - 16:00 Theatre)
PM Press author Gabriel Kuhn on the subversive side of football. "Soccer versus the State: Tackling Football and Radical Politics" is the latest book by Gabriel who published four books with PM Press in the last year.
Soccer has turned into a multi-billion dollar industry. Professionalism and commercialization dominate its global image. Yet the game retains a rebellious side, maybe more so than any other sport co-opted by money makers and corrupt politicians. From its roots in working-class England to political protests by players and fans, and a current radical soccer underground, the notion of football as the "people's game" has been kept alive by numerous individuals, teams, and communities.

Peripheral Vision
(14:30 - 16:00 Connolly Room)
Anarchists from Portugal, Ireland, Greece & Spain discuss alternatives to Frankfurt-rule and the bailout blues. Manuel Baptista is a veteran anarchist activist and author from lisbon, Portugal. Manu Garcia is and activist with CNT Seville in the Andalucia region of Spain. Mario is an anarchist from Greece, now living in Cork and Paul Bowman is a member of the WSM in Dublin.

Film: The Pipe
(16:30 - 18:00 Theatre)
Risteard O Domhnaill's film of the resistance to Shell by the Rossport and Erris community in West Mayo. The Irish Times review said: "Already acclaimed at half a dozen festivals, Risteard Ó Domhnaill's film is an unashamedly personal - not to mention aligned - attempt to convey the character of the troubled community in Kilcommon Parish.[...] a fine slice of verité". There will be a short talk after the film by a member of Dublin Shell to Sea to update people on the latest situation in Rossport.

The Arab Spring, News and Reflections
(16:30 - 18:00 Connolly Room)
José Antonio Gutiérrez Danton returns from Egypt with news of the state of the struggle for greater freedom in the post-Mubarak era. This will also be an opportunity to discuss the wider winds of change sweeping through North Africa and the Middle East sparked by the Tunisian uprising. José Antonio is a Chilean anarchist living in Dublin, a prolific writer on Anarkismo.net and in myriad publications, he writes, translates and links anarchist and anti-imperialist struggles from across Latin America, through Europe and to the Middle East and further abroad.

Its a shame that there is no discussion / debate space about the visit of the queen of England at the bookfair. Questions such as:

Should anarchists get involved?
Is the protest solely going to be dominated by republicans - so anti-state left wingers dont want to be associated with it?
Are the reasons for protesting in the past / sectarian?

... in the continuum of other talks and debates that have happened before on anarchism/republicanism, it would have been interesting, especially given the swirling security buildup, and the demonisation of any dissenters (something anarchists would be familiar with from the past, with similar bogeyman scare stories in the media).

I hope that some from the non-republican left join in with Eirigi after they were involved with anti IMF and anti capitalist block actions during the winter.

We are a bit overstretched with the bookfair organising but we will be taking part in the protests in Cork & Dublin and Cork WSM are having a meeting on the visit tonight. There are a couple of articles on the WSM site, more to come. Next Weds in Dublin we will be taking part in the march on the banquet in Dublin castle (meet up 5pm outside St Catherine's on Thomas st).

See you at the bookfair
