A month after the arrival of Scotland's Hate Crime Act and it appears reports of the demise of the Scottish Enlightenment may have been premature, no thanks to the SNP but due to the doughty spirit of the Scots.

Should governments be able to censor online content for the entire world? That's what Australia is claiming the right to do. But do they really think China and Russia should be able to choose what the world sees?

On eve of judicial review, Rossport Solidarity Camp breaks up Shell transport lines.

Direct action against Shell in Mayo continues

Yesterday afternoon, Shell security personnel watched helplessly from their compound as Shell to Sea supporters overturned bog tracks that were laid to enable heavy machinery to build the next stage of the Corrib gas pipeline.

Since Tuesday Shell has been trying to work on this most controversial part of their project, despite the fact that a judicial review of the Bord Pleanala permission for it is due this week. The campaigners from all over the country displaced more than 30ft of bog tracks.

NOTE TO EDITORS:
Shell to Sea is a national campaign with active groups based across Ireland. The Shell to Sea campaign has three main aims.

  1. To renegotiate the terms of the Great Oil and Gas Giveaway, which sees Ireland’s 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent* off the West Coast go directly to the oil companies, with the Irish State retaining a 0% share, no energy security of supply and only 25% tax on profits against which all costs can be deducted.

  2. To have the Corrib gas field exploited in a safe way that will not expose the local community in Erris to unnecessary health and safety and environmental risks.

  3. To seek justice for the human rights abuses suffered by Shell to Sea campaigners due to their opposition to Shell’s proposed inland refinery.
*This figure is based on the estimate, issued by the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources (DCENR) in 2006, that the amount of gas and oil in the Rockall and Porcupine basins, off Ireland’s west coast, is 10 BBOE (billion barrels of oil equivalent).
