On Occupation and the University: A Discussion

category dublin | education | event notice author Friday January 21, 2011 14:32author by Conall - UCD FEE Report this post to the editors

The Provisional University and Free education for Everyone (FEE) present:
On Occupation and the University: A Discussion
7pm, Thursday, January 27th, Seomra Spraoi.

Following international coverage of the occupations of universities across the UK and Italy, the occupation here of the Department of Finance during anti-student fee protests late last year and the occupation of Department of education grounds with the 'surprise conference' on education, the Provisional University and FEE invite you to a discussion on occupation and the university.

With live video feed from activists in the UK on the controversial occupations there, this event is a chance to talk about the political potential of occupation today and to ask if, how, when and where we should occupy.

Free education for Everyone (FEE) is a grassroots student campaign, set up to fight the re-introduction of direct tuition fees while campaigning for genuinely free education for all.
FEE activists have organised protests, occupations and blockades across the country since 2008. As well as fighting the re-introduction of third level fees, we fight for an abolition of the registration fee which has now been raised to over €2,000, for a decent grant system and for a massive investment in public education from pre-school to third level.

The Provisional University is an autonomous education project based in Dublin. Our commitment to autonomous education stems from the fact that the independent and egalitarian dimensions of study and research are under attack. This attack is not limited to the university. It echoes wherever people act independently of market objectives and, in particular, act on the basis of equality (e.g. community development, public health care…). Our goal is to express, augment and organise autonomous research and study, to withdraw our energy and curiosity (which in fact sustains the university) in a kind of subjective strike and to rearticulate them in a collective, open and horizontal fashion.

As researchers and students, we are not ‘at’ the university, we are the university.

I would love to have the gall to be as prententious as those people.
