Education Cuts

category antrim | education | event notice author Thursday July 01, 2010 16:23author by NIPSA517 - NIPSAauthor email nipsa517 at seelb dot org dot uk Report this post to the editors

The Southern Education Board has agreed to reinstate transport for the children attending the special needs summer schemes. This is an important step forward in the fight to restore the summer schemes including the second week of the schemes across all Boards.

As part of the campaign a protest has been called by NIPSA 517 and the Carers Forum on Learning Disability. The protest will be held next Wednesday 7th of July 2010 at 1.00pm in the Market Square, Lisburn (beside the Irish Linen Centre Museum).

NIPSA 517 would encourage as many to attend as possible and send a clear message to the Minister that we will fight all cuts.

It seems now the SEELB is the only board committed to this disgracefull attack on children with special needs, The other boards turned tail and ran when they saw the level of opposition. Let this be a marker, it's time to fight.

Fight the cuts
NIPSA 517 understands that the SEELB is going to reinstate the second week of the special needs summer schemes for pupils with severe learning difficulties.

NIPSA welcomes this decision and believes that it is in the interest of children, parents and staff.

Unfortunately the Minister of Education and the Northern Ireland Assembly has not yet released additional funding for the scheme. As we stated in our circular dated 30 June 2010 NIPSA 517 believes that the Minister must make additional resources available to allow the schemes to go ahead as planned. Any other approach will mean the schemes are not properly funded and an already over stretched budget will be brought to breaking point.

This is not acceptable and all cuts will be fought.

NIPSA 517 would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all who assisted in the campaign against cuts in the special needs summer scheme and to encourage everyone to stand together against cuts.

If we fight, we can win. If we don’t fight, we will most certainly lose!
