Video from Daíl Protest

category national | anti-capitalism | news report author Wednesday May 12, 2010 16:55author by Trade Union TVauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

'I'm sick of being one of the sheep'- watch why people took to the streets to protest last night in the rain.

Thousands took to the streets to protest at the bailout of the banks and at the jobs crisis in Ireland. Watch some of the speeches, listen to the views of some of the protestors.
John Bisset a veteran campaigner for social justice was particularly scathing of the role of the media in backing up the propaganda war on workers, women, the poor, the disabled and the vulnerable. There were some scuffles at the Daíl where people tried to get in.

Speakers included Fintan O'Toole (Irish Times), Jeanette Byrne (Patients Together), Siobhan O'Donoghue (Community Workers Co-op), John Kidd (Siptu Firefighters), Cllr Richard Boyd Barrett (People Before Profit), Professor Kathleen Lynch (UCD), Ruadhan MacAodhán (Sinn Féin) and John Bisset from the Canals Communities Project.

The Irish are getting angry, finally, good.

The woman speaking at the end put it right, the message to Ireland:

come out and protest
dont be complaining,
dont be telling me that "ah look what they are doing with the cuts "
get out and fight for your own rights
dont be expecting us to do it
come and fight

i look forward to more action and more vids of that action from TRADE UNION TV - http://www.youtube.com/user/TradeUnionTVIreland

‘‘This is Greece! We are not Ireland! We do not sacrifice ourselves for the rich!"-
http://www.sbpost.ie/newsfeatures/we-do-not-sacrifice-o....html

"The previous, hated, British colonial rule has left the country with a well embedded legal and political infrastructure. The country’s small size makes it easier to manage. While Ireland has a history of bloody civil war, it appears to be facing the current woes with surprisingly high levels of social cohesion.

In a sense, the crisis is being treated like a horrific new year’s day hangover: everyone knows that Ireland wildly overindulged during the credit boom, they also know that purging – if not repentance – is needed. So the nation is collectively lying on the sofa, groaning. "

Thanks for that Paula. Its worth noting that one of those who was batoned by the cops at the demo last night was a 61 year old retired midwife. She wasn't endangering the cops but she was hit on the head with a baton. This is a breach of Garda discipline, they are not supposed to strike people on the head, certainly not people who pose no danger to them.

Dont get too starry eyed about the cops. If it came to it they would baton a pensioners demo offf the streets.
