International - Event Notice Friday May 21 2010 08:00 AM Merthyr to Mayo Solidarity Cycle
Making links between communities
Across the planet, in the places where fossil fuels are sourced, people are resisting new energy developments.
Communities are standing together to defend their homes, health, land and water, and our shared planet… This is localised resistance with huge global significance….
From the tar sands of Alberta, Canada to the woods of Mainshill, Scotland….
from the rivers and plains of the Niger Delta to the Amazon jungles of Peru….
and from the valleys of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales to the Northwest coast of Mayo, Ireland… The Merthyr to Mayo cycle caravan will spend two weeks travelling between Merthyr Tydfil, Wales and Rossport, Ireland: two community struggles resisting fossil fuel extraction in their areas.
The time we spend in these communities will provide an opportunity to learn from one another, to share stories and to explore our areas of commonality; we will look at how we can work in solidarity with each other.
On our journey we will hold events in different areas we pass through:
We will highlight the stories of the Merthyr and Mayo communities, explore the links between them and examine the global significance of their struggles.
Join us!
The Solidarity cycle, which will start in Merthyr, Wales on Friday May 21st and arrive in Rossport, Mayo on Friday June 4th for the start of the June gathering, is being organised by supporters of the campaign against open cast coal mining in Merthyr, the campaign against the corrib gas project in Mayo and the bicycology group in the UK. So far most of the organising is being done by the UK group, but it is hoped that a lot more people from Ireland will get involved in organising, supporting and taking part in the cycle.
It aims to link the two communities in their struggle for justice and safety from the corporations who seek to profit from the explotation of the natural resources in their area. It also hopes to link with other communities along it´s route and raise awareness of the issues effecting us all.
The planned route so far includes: Cork/Macroon, Killarney, Tralee, Kilrush, Lahinch,Gort,Galway, Castlerea, Ballina
If you are interested in getting involved please mail us at merthyrtomayo@aktivix.org or visit the website for more information.
