NUIM Students Deliver Petition Against Ahern Appointment

category kildare | education | event notice author Tuesday December 01, 2009 18:13author by Garfitzp Report this post to the editors

Meet 2pm, outside JH

All NUI Maynooth students are invited to deliver the petition condemning Bertie Ahern's appointment as an honorary professor in the University. Let's send a clear message that we don't want this man honoured on our campus.

Over 1,000 students have signed so far. The text of the petition is as follows:

The following students wish to condemn the appointment of Bertie Ahern T.D. as an honorary professor in NUI Maynooth. We believe the University should take into account the views of the student body before offering an award to such a controversial political figure. We believe that such a step should not be made if it contradicts the views of the students and staff of the University. Considering Bertie Ahernís record in a government that led us to the current economic crisis, the questions surrounding his personal finances and the damaging cutbacks to education being pursued by the Government to which he belongs as a T.D., this appointment is not appropriate.
