World car free day

category national | environment | event notice author Friday August 14, 2009 01:26author by anti-car Report this post to the editors

Every September 22, people from around the world get together in the streets, intersections, and neighbourhood blocks to remind the world that we don't have to accept our car-dominated society.

But we do not want just one day of celebration and then a return to "normal" life. When people get out of their cars, they should stay out of their cars. It is up to us, it is up to our cities, and our governments to help create permanent change to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, and other people who do not drive cars.

Let World Carfree Day be a showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like without cars…365 days a year.

As the climate heats up, World Carfree Day is the perfect time to take the heat off the planet, and put it on city planners and politicians to give priority to cycling, walking and public transport, instead of to the automobile.

Unfortunately dunk and all it doesn't like that there'll be anything happening for Car Free Day this year, certainly not in Dublin. There was meant to be a Critical Mass for Car Free Day in Dublin for the first time in several years, but at the very last minute that has been deferred to a later date (Maybe under duress from the state? It would be interesting to know what went on behind the scenes).

Hi Disappointed, I see you got around!

A you may know, I'm the one who called for a critical mass a few weeks back. I never organised a cm for car free day. As I said elsewhere on Indym, I left my email four times and organised a meeting. I done this by myself, and I only do the occasional sabotage for the state. You could have been involved. Why dont you organise something yourself if your not going to get involved?

Conor. M

(ps) since you have not revealed your name, just come to the mass, it should be a good laugh and maybe you could even come to the next meeting and I wont know who you are and we'll shake hands, and everthing will be great and we can go for a cycle.

What are you trying to achieve?
Less cars it seems. I like that! Why?
Less climate change? Why?
Educate yourself.
How many sausages do you stuff down your throat per week?
Do you actually know the science?
The amount of CO2 shit out by transport VS the amount shit out by flesh eaters?
Not to mind the suffering

Due to traffic caused by road closure!!

Would it be possible to advertise and remind people that No Car Day is upon us again.
This reminded might encourage people to take public transport and with some notice more people could plan to do so.

I have asked several people this morning and no one I spoke to knew that this was happening.

Perhaps advertising, extra busses (trains) and some walking routes might encourage people and if not then the delays caused will certanly encourage people not to drive, but why should we learn the hard way!!!

It’s a bit disappointing and frustrating to be honest.

I would like to respond to 2 comments above. I am interested in the comment left by 'Disappointed' and also the comment entitled 'Nothing for Car Free Day 2009'. Was there meant to be a Critical Mass for Car Free Day? I'd be interested if you could tell me more about this. The first I heard about Critical Mass was at the Seomra Spraoi meeting. A group of us discussed the merits of the different dates and we decided that in case another event was planned for Car Free Day it was best not to clash. In any case, Critical Mass is generally on the last Friday of the month. In addition we thought it would be good to connect with people who have experience of Critical Mass in other countries where it is held on the last Friday of the month.

To the 'Questions' comment I would like to say that many cyclists may also be non-meat eaters! It is funny to think that vegans don't cycle or cyclists aren't vegan or vegetarian!

Sin é. Critical Mass will be deadly so come along and have your questions answered and your answers questioned.
