1916 Rising: Exhibition Of Memorabilia And Tours

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Wednesday May 27, 2009 11:27author by Diarmuid - Save Moore Street Campaign Report this post to the editors

The Save Moore Street campaign stages 1916 exhibition

An exhibition of rare and never-before seen 1916 Rising exhibits is being organised in order to add impetus to the campaign to save Moore Street, including the last buildings to be occupied by the insurgents from the GPO.

HQ16 -- THE EXHIBITION

30th May 2009, 12noon -- 6pm. Official launch at 3pm. (Also tours on 31st).

Wynns Hotel, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1.

This exhibition has been organised to display a unique collection of memorabilia and artefacts from the Easter Rising. These will include

The surrender flag from Moore Street

Jack Plunkett's bullet-marked Volunteers' slouch hat

The lock of James Connolly's hair cut the night before his execution on the family's instructions

Tom Clarke's diary

There will also be a fine collection of original uniforms, flags, medals and other associated items. Most of these items have been in safe keeping of the immediate families and have therefore never been seen in public before. This is a rare chance to view them. There will also be the opportunity to view a digitally-enhanced print of the famous GPO Garrison veterans' group photograph taken in Croke Park in 1938. A volunteer will be on hand to help add any names to the many unidentified faces within the group. Relatives of the executed 1916 leaders will also be present over the weekend. James Connolly Heron a great- grandson of James Connolly will be unveiling our alternative plan for the Moore Street area.

TOURS OF BATTLEFIELD MOORE STREET
On Sunday 31st there will be guided tours of 'Battlefield Moore Street' at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Building on the success of the recent 'Arms Around Moore Street' demonstration, you are urged to attend with as many people as you can muster .

It's a pity this falls on the bank holiday weekend when a lot of interested people will be away, (including myself) at the Rossport Gathering in Mayo and beyond.

Any plans to show it again and the tour?

Bring the tour to the States -- there are thousands of us who would help organize fundraisers.
