Public Lecture: Creative Solutions for the New Emergency by Dmitry Orlov

category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Sunday May 24, 2009 22:41author by Terence Report this post to the editors

Dmitry Orlov of Reinventing Collapse fame to speak in Dublin

Dmitry Orlov who is perhaps now one of the most well known people in the Peak Oil community will be coming to Dublin in June and will be giving a public lecture titled: Creative Solutions for the New Emergency on Tues 9th June in the Davenport Hotel, Dublin 2.

Dmitry will be here to take part in a Feasta organised conference from 10th to 12th June and will be a keynote speaker in that event.

Dmitry Orlov, author of Reinventing Collapse, will explore the question "What is it that we are looking at here, and what can we do about it?" He believes that there is not much hope for a global financial system and economy, nor should there be given the huge problems it is causing with the environment. If this is the case, then what can people do, in terms of coping with financial collapse, creating community resilience, and re-skilling for the new, local, self-reliant, highly manual age that is coming?

The main details of this event are:

What: Public Lecture: Creative Solutions for the New Emergency: Seizing the Mid-Collapse Moment

Who: Dmitry Orlov.
Where: Davenport Hotel, 2 Merrion Sq, Dublin 2
When: 7:30pm, Tues, 9th June

Price: 10 euro. Unfortunately there is an admission charge and presumably this is to cover the expenses of both the venue and of Dmitry. It is however not an commerical event.

The time has yet to be announced but one can assume it will be around 7 or 8pm.

Dmitry Orlov is an American Russian who was born in Russia and spent his early life there. He then moved to the USA. However his family used to visit the USSR every year for the summer, and he had visited the country before the collapse of the Soviet Union and then in the years after the collapse right through the 1990s.

He came to world attention when he described his experiences of the Soviet collapse and then towards the end of the 1990s as he began to notice great similiarities with the US in terms of the political system and the belief system around that holds it together.

So one of his early appearences to the broader world was when he wrote this article for the website www.energybulletin.net titled: "Closing the 'Collapse Gap': the USSR was better prepared for collapse than the US" by Dmitry Orlov

It can be found here: http://www.energybulletin.net/node/23259

The response was so overwhelming and it is still by far the most read article on the above site, that he went on to publish a book called: Reinventing Collapse He also gave his first public lecture at one of the ASPO conferences to 500 people and it was a massive success.

He never intended to write a book and just drifted into all this, but his writing style is great and he certainly should not be missed.

He has also given many podcast interviews which you can easily find on the Internet. For example, here is one such interview: http://kboo.fm/node/8892

From the title of this public talk, it would appear that Dmitry is moving on from his description of what happened in the USSR and the parallels with the US today and is going to talk about how to cope with the changes that are coming down the line.

Even if you never intend to go this talk it is well worth listening to one of his podcasts.
