Trade Unionists in the firing line Ð Colombia (UK/2007/5 mins) [ www.justiceforcomombia.org ]

Asdrúbal Jiménez was a human rights lawyer and defender of the union workers at banana plantations in Colombia. Now forced into exile, he and his wife reflect on the political situation in Colombia.

Entrevista con Aleida Guevara (US/2007/11 mins)
Aleida Guevara, daughter of Che Guevara, is interviewed about the Cuban health system by a very famous filmmaker, guess who?

Hágase la luz (UK/2008/13 mins) [Roberto Chile]
The Cuban healthcare is not only for all the people on the island, but also for its neighbours, from San Vicente and Las Granadinas to Venezuela, in this instance, restoration of sight. In last year's film festival, the Irish documentary, 12,000 Years of blindness was screened, highlighting the work of a Galway based ophthalmologist's work in Venezuela with Cuban medical staff and their pioneering work 'barrio al dentro'.

Cuban Song (Canada/2006/63 mins) [Fernand Béanger, Louise Dugal and Yves Angrignon]
Cuban song features an irrestible soundtrack that drives the soul of everyday life in Havana. It is a timely glimpse into the lives of ordinary Cubans under Castro. With the essentials of life guaranteed healthcare, education and housing for all fulfilled, the communities relax with song. From Celia Cruz, Nico Saqulto, Angel Villoldo, Ramon Calzadilla, Coro Cantores de Cienfuegos to Banda Municipal de Santiago Relax and be entertained! It is a society that shows us another route away from the self destruction of economic globalisation, WTO, The World Bank, IMF EU Central Bank, that are destroying Ireland and its neighbouring countries that make up the European Union. There is another way for our society.

Los Cartoneros * (Argentina/UK/2007/70 mins) [Ale Corte]
Everyday, 70,000 workers travel by train to Buenos Aires. They are los cartoneros or paper pickers who make a living searching for cardboard and other waste to sell for little financial reward. They are at the base of a new and thriving recycling industry in Buenos Aires. It is a personal story of a young girl and her family, adapting to a life of impoverishment. Despite their harsh existence, they continue to live in hope.

Colour at the end of the World *(Argentina/UK/2008/70 mins) [Ale Corte]
In 2004, the Benetton group forcibly evicted a Mapuche couple from their rural home, having finally to resort to police intervention. The Mapuche people have gathered the support of international activists and a Nobel Peace prize-winner in their fight against the giant landowners. Benetton is the largest foreign landowner (over two million acres of land in Patagonia to support the textile industry's demand for wool). The Mapuches are adamant that ancient lands cannot be bought and sold, they are a birthright of an age old community.

* The Director, Ale Corte, will be present to introduce Los Cartoneros and Colours and lead a discussion following the screening.
