Give us laws that the City (London finacial area) will respect and fear

category international | crime and justice | other press author Monday February 23, 2009 18:19author by Ken Macdonald - London Times, Febuary 23, 2009 Report this post to the editors

I put this up because I think it is a very significant statement from such a high profile person in such dodgy times. Student

'Our system for regulating markets and for prosecuting market crime is completely broken. If you mug someone in the street and you are caught, the chances are that you will go to prison. In recent years mugging someone out of their savings or their pension would probably earn you a yacht.

Forget the paranoiac paraphernalia of national databases, identity cards and all the other liberty-sapping addictions of the Home Office. Forget the rhetoric and do something useful. If the Government really wants to protect people beyond armoured-vest posturing, here is the opportunity.Do they really believe that an illiterate mother-of-five drug mule from a village in The Gambia should be serving five times the sentence of a millionaire City fraudster?

Sir Ken Macdonald, QC, is a member of Matrix Chambers and was Director of Public Prosecutions from 2003-08

Great story. I dont read the London Times and I wouldn't have come across this.

I recommend everyone reads the full commentary. It shows a sort of sociological view from the top. Weird times or what?

I took you at your word and I have read it, very interesting, and does make a lot of sense.

But what bothers me about it is, have they read it in Government Buildings?, I doubt that they have its too much for that brainless shower to absorb, never mind understand.

''But what bothers me about it is, have they read it in Government Buildings?'' -- Arm-a-Gedden

As it happens, the tv3 politics presenter stood outside the Dail this afternoon and quoted from this story. So if they havent read it, they have definitly heard it.
