Protest meeting to support setting up of pro-choice group at UCC

category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Wednesday January 28, 2009 22:14author by Alan Davis - Cork Women's Right to Choose Groupauthor email cork.womens.right.to.choose at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

On Monday evening this week the Societies Guild at UCC rejected an application, backed by over 100 student signatures, to set up a pro-choice student society.

The “reason” the Societies Guild gave for their disgraceful decision was:

"Your society application was brought before the Guild last evening. Unfortunately status was not approved. It is a decision that was ultimately made by a previous Guild and is being upheld. 'A society already exists which caters for debate in the area of abortion and choice'. Membership to this and all societies is open to all students in UCC. Thank you for your interest and I hope you join one of the many societies in UCC."

This is clearly absurd as the society that already exists is the anti-choice "Students for life" - this decision amounts to political censorship of the pro-choice message and must be overturned.

Attached is the poster/leaflet we will be distributing on UCC campus tomorrow (Thursday) 11am – 3pm advertising a meeting on campus next Monday (2 Feb) of all those opposed to this decision and who want to help get it overturned.

Please pass on the news and help build the meeting next Monday, 7pm, Room 8, West Wing, UCC.

A similar set of events happened in Trinity college. Students were told that they should join the Pro-life society to try and change its principles.

This is a crazy situation! I am pro-choice (though not in UCC so of no real use to you). However, if it were the societies board refusing to accept an anti-choice group my reaction would be the same - it is ridiculous!

Best of luck with your group and remember, you don't need any boards approval to start a group on campus. In my experience the loops they make you go through are more hassle than they are worth anyway, and take from the actual efficacy of any group, as they are basically viewed as a social group rather than a valid protest/action group. If it's not restricted to uni students you can also bring in members from the wider community who may have a lot of experience.

I wish you well!
