CFP THREAT TO FISHING COMMUNITIES

Breton delegates at the Annual General Meeting of the Celtic League
expressed concern at the threat posed to coastal communities by current
European Fishery policy.

Following discussion it was agreed that the League would write to
the European Commission expressing its concerns and urging that more
positive steps are taken to defend the livelihood of communities which
derive their living from the sea.

The AGM was reminded that it was over a decade ago that the League
first expressed concerns and since that time the position for fishing
communities in Brittany, Ireland and the other Celtic countries had
worsened.

The resolution set out below was unanimously adopted by the meeting
and the Celtic League Secretary General was asked to contact the EU
Fisheries Commissioner to raise the issue.

"This AGM: recalling the concerns of the Celtic League articulated
at the 1989 AGM, held in Abergwaun (Fishguard), about the long term
implications of the European Union Common Fisheries policy calls upon
the European Commission to take steps to protect those communities
within the Celtic countries that have traditionally derived their
living from the fishing industry.

I have mixed up this group with a very similar monikered racist organisation. The fact remains though that many groups alleging a passionate interest in their celtic culture are mere fronts for xenophobic rant, cleverly disguised behind an interest in common culture and interest in preserving our celtic environment.
Celtic League doesn’t help itself much either - The Celtic League, American Branch aim is “to provide a link among all Americans of Celtic descent or sympathies who seek a deeper appreciation of their glorious legacy, and the need to strengthen the cultural and national identities of the Celtic peoples” (from their website). This last line is, I feel, pretty ambiguous and open to question. Please prove me wrong…

Fishermen make shitloads of money and they have done for many a long year. They have done this by grossly and often illegally overfishing endangered fish species. Now they whine when there told there are not enough fish left because of them. They just want more moneyand are not concerned about the welfare of our seas at all.
