The Gathering Storm

Manorhamilton Event brings inspiration and hope

This Friday in the Glens Centre in Manorhamilton, Co. Leitirm a large gathering of individuals and groups who want to change the world will take place. The event organised by the North West Solidarity Network starts at 8pm with a collection of stalls, book stalls, fair trade produce and Palestinian produce. This will be followed by prominent speakers and a film showing. The event is free entry.

During this period of economic crisis when all focus is on how to resuscitate the financial markets the organisers of this event want to encourage people to work together to build a world where human solidarity; support and assistance for one another is the basis of how we live.

The event aims to highlight the work that people are involved in, promote practical examples and the links between struggles and also encourage people to play whatever part they feel comfortable with to build a better world together.

One of the organisers, outlined the reasons for the event, “the idea behind the evening was to look at how we might all be able to play a more proactive role in making a difference in this world. We discussed how we live in a world where people are divided from each other and that this division is prevalent in the international context. We are divided individually from one another on a local level and internationally. How could we begin to make links and break down barriers so carefully fostered by the rulers and planners of the social and economic system we live in? This is our local attempt at doing just that”.

The diversity of the people attending the event makes for an interesting evening and perhaps maybe its strength. The organisers feel passionately that this event will be the start of an essential refocusing of ideas and energies, an organiser proposed the question “if this system that governs our lives began to collapse how would we deal with it?”

Developing the networks of support and solidarity among groups and individuals could well be an essential ingredient? There will be plenty for people to be inspired by in Manorhamilton this Friday night, a gathering storm, perhaps? A storm that will blow the cobwebs away and clear the mind - a couple of hours of inspiration and hope in the company of friends.
