....or 'A Swim For Each County!'

The Annual CABHAIR Christmas Morning Swim in the Grand Canal in Inchicore , Dublin , will be held as usual this December 25th ....
A Christmas snack after his 'shower' !
A Christmas snack after his 'shower' !

It began - properly structured and organised - in 1976 ,as a ‘fundraiser with a difference’ combined with the need to gain extra publicity for a situation which was then - as now - making world headlines . Those that sat down together in early September 1976 to tighten-up the then ‘hit-and-miss’ affair were a dedicated team who fully understood that to fail in their business would not only bring derision on them and the issue they sought to highlight , but would give their enemy a publicity coup which they would exploit to the fullest extent . With that in mind , the team persevered - favours were called-in , guarantees were secured , provisions obtained and word dispatched to like-minded individuals in the near-locale . At the appointed time on the agreed day - 12 Noon , Christmas Day 1976 - a soon-to-be 32-years-young event was ‘born’…….
The CABHAIR Christmas Day Swim is , thankfully , still going strong and will be , as mentioned , 32-years-young on December 25th next!
Photographs of last years event can be viewed here-
https://www.indymedia.ie/article/85620?userlanguage=ga&...=true
- and , if you can’t make it to the actual swim itself , you might consider posting a donation to the following address (please note that all monies raised goes to the republican prisoners themselves and to their families - no expenses or admin fees etc are removed) :
CABHAIR
Irish Republican Prisoners Dependants Fund
223 Parnell Street,
Dublin 1,
Ireland.

Thank You,
Go Raibh Maith Agat.
Sharon.

Hi Larry -

That is just so sad - I can only imagine the emotions that will hit you at the swim this year : you remembering and missing your Da , your kids remembering and missing their Grandad .
I can't say any more at this point except thanks for writing that post .

It is not sad, it is a beautiful way of remembering the awesome time well spent with dad. When your children grow up and bring their children, they will relive the stories and events well spent with you. It is a beautiful family tradition. Be sure to relive the memories and tell them the stories embeded in your heart. Dad's not very far away. His love is always with you.

Hi Larry !

I know most of the lads from Clondalkin that go to the Swim each year - one of them (Martin G) brings his kids and my girls and Martin's kids have a 'grand re-union' on the banks of the Grand Canal each Christmas morning !
Everything seems to be on track for this event - the organisers have told me that the swimmers are in training (cold showers every morning!) , the 'lemonade' and crisps etc from the local shopkeepers have been secured, and contact has been made with Santa Claus who will hopefully grace us with his presence for an hour or two !
Thanks for the comment , Larry : see you then !

the young ones of irish political prisoners this christmas please pass this notice on
best of luck to all involved in the swim and well done to all who support it

CHRISTMAS APPEAL
www.irishfreedom.net

Thanks to everyone who over the past year has contributed to
the IRPAS Sustainer. Your help is greatly appreciated by the
dependants and family members of the Republican Political
Prisoners held on both sides of England’s border in Ireland.

The Annual CABHAIR Christmas Swim will again be held this
year on Christmas morning at the Grand Canal in Inchicore,
Dublin. This year marks the 32nd Anniversary of this event.
The theme for 2008 is:

“A Year for all 32 Counties”.

Over the last few years, here in America we have had a growing interest in support and sponsorship for those who take the chilly morning plunge to the assist the prisoners’ families.

Hopefully this year we will have even more support for this worthy cause. Currently there are dozens of political prisoners being held in English and Irish jails for their belief in a 32 County Republic, as a free and sovereign Nation.

Political prisoners need our help!

With the holiday season fast approaching, many families will benefit from your donation – any amount - in support of the annual CABHAIR Swim. Your contribution means something truly special to them, especially in days such as these. Please help assist them if you are at all able.
If you have been meaning to contribute all year, make this the time to do so.

If you had not considered it, please do so now and remember that the dollars sent in will help to raise the spirits of a family - who have sacrificed themselves to raise the spirits of a Nation.

As an added incentive, the first 24 people to send donations to
the NIFC in the amount of $100 or more will receive in return a
special ornament handcrafted by one of our members. It is a
beautiful decoration for any home all year round.

Nollaig shona agaibh go léir!

Please make checks out to Cumann Na Saoirse and mail to
NIFC P.O. Box 77108, Woodside, N.Y. 11377

Yes , indeed : as with all such Top Class events , this Swim has inspired its own Jewellery Collection : the piece is hand carved, gilded, jeweled, numbered and signed by the Artist involved !
Details on how to obtain same can be seen on this thread -

Hi Swim Fan !

Thanks for that message of support - much appreciated !
The lads in Inchicore tell me that they're ready and waiting for Christmas Morning to get the 'show' on the road - at least five sponsored swimmers will be taking the plunge with another three "almost certain" that they'll be doing the same .

Hopefully Paula will be present to do her usual first-class report and photographs , plus there will be two Cabhair photographers present on the day so , from one source or another , we should be able to post some pics on this thread on Christmas Day .

Thanks again!

Hi Larry !

Thanks for that , Larry - glad that you and the friends and the kids enjoyed the day : everyone seemed to be having a ball!
I know Cabhair are thrilled with how the event went , and not just because of the amount of money that was raised by it , but because events like that help to keep the Six County issue 'live' with people - there was at least between 150 and 200 people that crossed our path on foot during those few hours , plus the many dozens in cars that slowly drove by , sounding their car-horns in support as they passed .

It was well worth the effort - and 'Thank You' to you , Larry , and those like you , for making the effort and taking the time to get there . It really is appreciated.

Thanks!

Sharon.
