Balanced reporting last seen being ushered out of the window The Irish Times goes all out on behalf of the 'Yes' Campaign. Expect more of this nauseating lecturing over the next few days. In an unattributed piece and a report by Mark Hennessy, Political Correspondent today both go so far out of their way to endorse the 'Yes' vote that it almost leaves you smiling. Well, it might do, if you weren't concerned about how the government is misleading Irish people about the true meaning and significance of the Lisbon Treaty. |

I've just discoverd from one senior news editor that he was unaware of the MEP vote in February which saw three quarters of them vote NOT to respect the outcome of the Irish referendum.
In case there is any Indymedia reader who didn't know this, here's an article by Kathy Sinnott (yeah, I know, I know but she is not wrong about this point):

I dont think the Irish Times was ever very comfortable with the idea of Irish independance - letting the natives rule themselves was always highly suspect. After all, the Times did call for the execution of the 1916 leaders. Nothing much has changed.
I don't think the Irish Times called for executions in 1916. The Irish Independent did in an editorial.
I remember Hennessey covering an industrial dispute at the Valuation Office when I worked there back in 2002. He interviewed the management side and faithfully reported their version of events. He never bothered contacting the union side. I rang him up and gave him the union side of the story. He said he didn't know how to reach us! He then politely listened and promised to write a balancing article but suprise surprise nothing appeared.
From IRISH TIMES leader, headed 'The Insurrection', published 01/05/1916:
'...The state has struck, but its work is not yet finished. The surgeon's knife has been put to the body of Ireland, and its course must not be stayed until the whole malignant growth has been removed. In the verdict of history, weakness today would be even more criminal than the indifference of the last few months. Sedition must be rooted out of Ireland once and for all. The rapine and bloodshed of the past week must be finished with a severity which will make any repetition of them impossible for generations to come...'
Let's hope that the 'Are we out of minds?' editorial of 07/06/2008 proves to be equally percipient
