category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Sunday April 20, 2008 18:22author by Nikita - CYM Report this post to the editors

The Connolly Youth Movement is organising a picket of the Shell station on the Finglas road for Saturday the 26th of April at 12pm.

CYM is organising this picket of the Shell station on the Finglas road to help raise awareness of this important issue. Everyones welcome to come and show some solidarity with the people of Mayo so try and make it along if you can!

If you're heading there from town then you can get the 40,40a,40b,40c or 40d from Parnell Street (outside the Hophouse) and then after about 10 minutes on the bus you'll see the station on your left handside opposite Glasnevin graveyard.

Bring your Shell To Sea banners!

See you there bright and early at 12pm.

The Shell station opposite Glasnevin cemetery is being changed into a "Topaz" station.

But even a cursory glance at the website of the Topaz company shows that it's a "Shell licensee".

All the petrol is still coming from Shell.

What next.
Do not buy or use anything that has been manufactured from shell or statoil, including all secondary products which are utilized by other industries.
Get a grip pal.

Do Shell make diesel? I m wondering if the Tescos spuds are okay, or are they farmed with Shell diesel in the tractors and lorries? Would organic ones be better, or can I still eat inorganic ones because they are half the price?

Consumer boycotts have a part to play in many campaigns- you only have to ask why Topaz are trying to hide their connection with Shell to see how effective the protests had become.

And if you don't believe me, here's a quote from Frank Gleeson, retail director of Topaz, in an Irish Times article, explaining why the Shell signs had to go:

"Events in Mayo were part of the mix," says Mr Gleeson.

"The Shell brand was a little bit tired and hadn't been invested in for many years. In addition it had some negative connotations with the Corrib protests, of which it should be remembered that Statoil was involved too; they are also a shareholder in that."

Yet, all of the fuel sold in Topaz stations is still coming from Shell. Supposedly the consumers will be blinded by the bright new Topaz sign to realise...

Yeah right. Not buying petrol from Shell/Topaz will inevitably lead to the end of industrialisation, and thus civilisation will return to neolithic condidtions. It seems supporting a company which undermines human rights both in Ireland and iin other parts of the world is necessary for modern life to exist.

Get a grip. Buy your fuel somewhere else- or buy a bike, take the bus, or walk.

Supporting a company which uses force to secure profit is much more uncivilised (some might say "stone age") behaviour than taking peaceful action to educate them about the consequences of their actions.

The actions of our friends in Dublin and elsewhere in picketing Shell stations are very important. Back in the 90's at the time of the

Ogoni 9 and Brent Spar, Shell stations all over the world were boycotted and it scared the crap out of them. Admittedly, all they did was to

try to pretend they were adopting a new, ethical approach, which came to nothing as we can now see in Erris, but the fact remains that

they got a real shock when forecourt sales began to tumble. I'm now suggesting that we busy ourselves organising similar action

worldwide, informing anyone who cares to listen about exactly what's happening here. This increased level of awareness will be

needed because I fear that Shell are about to get very nasty indeed here in Erris. They're back, reluctantly I would suggest, in the village

that buried them 3 years ago, and the facade they've been so careful to build is beginning to slip in many small ways, not least with the

business community in Belmullet who're beginning to realise they've been sold a pup. So they're forced on to the commonage and I

expect them to stop at nothing this time to try to push through. But it's a different country now than it was in 2005, and a lot of people are

asking where all the money went. If we can notify as many people as possible nationally and worldwide about what's going on in Erris

it's just possible that this time we mightn't be left to fight the war on our own.

So keep it up guys. They're already trying to change their name; before this is over we'll make them change their tune.

And wasn't it terrible that someone got killed and a petrol station was fire bombed during the Brent saga only for Shell to be then vindicated when Greenpeace announced that they got their facts wrong - way wrong!!! Talk about reacting to erroneous information and ill based data. A great PR stunt based on heresay which all parties involved now admit. Erris looks like it is going the in the same wrong direction because certain people won't listen to the facts and are being driven by emotion. Greenpeace were man enough to say they didn't do their homework correctly on Brent and they would have reacted differently if they had.

Also remember that Shell in Nigeria is over 60% owned by the Nigerian Government and there were pleas for clemency from The Hague regarding the alleged 'act of treason'. Shell had no part in condemning The Ogoni 9 - if you believe so, then show me the proof of their involvement in the conviction of the 9. So you're not comparing apples with apples.

I await to this day a sound engineering justification from S2S as to why the pipeline shouldn't be where it is (I told you a number of weeks ago that you weren't going to like its new location!) and why the terminal is so dangerous.

Just shows the utter contempt Shell have for the local people by basically ignoring the events of the past 3 years and coming up with the same dodgy route and project which caused all the problems in the first place. By coming up with this route Shell consultants RPS even took the mickey out of the widly discredited Cassles report which Shell championed for so long. Suprising for a company with Shells resources that its PR dept is so inept as further evidenced by the sad little troll who goes by the name of "Erris Exile".
