A report on the International Women's Day Feminist Walking Tour of Dublin
At half past two on a crisp, sunny Saturday, over 140 people, of all ages, gathered at St Stephen’s Green front arch – exceeding all expectations – to attend the a Feminist Walking Tour marking International Women's Day.

The tour guides for the day were Carol Hunt – a history graduate and veteran tour guide – and Sinead Ahern, one of Choice Ireland’s finest spokespeople. Carol joked that she used to run a women’s history walking tour around Dublin, but that it was often not that well attended by men – until she changed the tour’s name to “A Sexual History of Dublin.” Same tour – different name – far better male attendance!

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5I am sorry I only made the afters section at the Teacher's Club, but everyone came in looking
like they had had a good time. As to the comment above, yes there are problems and I do
believe that many grassroots women's organisations are addressing them and engaging
at many levels. i would work with quite a cross-section of NGO's and advocacy groups.
this walking tour which was organised by Rag, Choice, WSM, and other individuals
and groups showed two things of great importance:
1. A willingness of diverse groups to work together to raise awareness of Irish feminist
history and organisation , there was also an inter-generational impetus which is brilliant.
(older active feminists came out to support and talk about experiences in feminism)
2. A willingness to engage with history and to utilise it to raise awareness of Ireland's
feminist history if which many of us are incredibly proud. A student of mine told me
that she could not go but had been reading and following the rag collective and though
she missed on her education (and is only now catching up) she was delighted that
younger women are trying really hard to engage with issues from a feminist perspective.
for many of the women there on the day, it was not a 'Teddy bear's picnic', they have
worked incredibly hard on a variety of issues- well done.

just to say congrats to all who organised the tour and the event in the teachers club. it was a really good, informative and enjoyable day all round and it was great to see so many feminists and pro-feminists there! ;)
