Solidarity With Gaza!

Day of Action in support of the Gazan people

Today members and supporters of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign as well as members of the Palestinian Community in Dublin staged a protest in support of the besieged population of Gaza.

Solidarity with Gaza!
Solidarity with Gaza!

Around 60 people turned up to hand out information leaflets, chant slogans, talk to passers-by and hear a few speeches. It was a colourful and vibrant action that drew the attention of many onlookers and helped raise the profile of the Palestinian struggle.

David Landy, an IPSC spokesperson stated: 'The situation there has reached emergency levels – not enough water, electricity, and medicine; widespread hunger, poverty, and unemployment; schools and other services rendered inoperative; constant bombardments and attacks by the Israeli military.'

He also highlighted the manner in which the EU has supported the siege, aiding and abetting a clear breach of the Geneva Convention, and called on all present to write letters of complaint to the EU and their local TDs.

The EU continues to give Israel most favoured-nation status through the Euro-Med agreement, and there are EU officials monitoring the borders to the Gazan "open air prison". Even worse, last month, Vice President of the European Commission Franco Frattini went to Israel to express EU approval of the siege of Gaza.

There were other speakers from the Palestinian Community and the Irish Anti War Movement as well as an impromptu speech by a member of the public who had seen for himself the suffering of the Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli state.

Congratulations to all. I participated in an equivalent event in Paris today, which was a little bit disappointing. For one thing, the demo was a general anti-racist one and the Palestinian contingent took up the tail-end. There were only about 200 of us (I think - but I'm a bad judge), which makes the Dublin demo proportionately much larger. The Dublin demo also seems to have been more colourful. Once again, well done!

From 1948 to1967 Israel's Arab neighbours operated a total siege on Israel's land frontiers excepting a few diplomats and tourists at the "Mandelbaum Gate" in Jerusalem.
Israel has been soft with Gaza compared to Allied treatment of Germany; given the war between Gaza's Hamas "government" which seeks an outcome when and where Israel will not exist at all,
It is time Raymond and ISPC stopped and thought clearly what they mean by calling for, "Victory for Gaza," because in the present conditions that they claim exist in Gaza - despite the plump faces of their demonstrators - they look like De Valera presenting the Germans with condolences for the death of Hitler.
Do note that ever since UN 181 in 1947 it is UN policy that there will be a Jewish majority, self-determinedly Jewish Israel as one half of the peace between the Arabs and Israel.
Arabs and friends(?) are in breach of UN policy in supporting anybody who holds to the contrary as every UN resolution on this wasteful Arab vendetta is premised on a Jewish Israel even with Arab and other minorities as is the case with all countries nowadays - excepting Palestine which seeks to be exclusively 100% Arab.

While Private Citizen Cohen's piece was chiefly incomprehensible, one part did catch my eye - his assertion that the UN, through resolution 181 called for a Jewish majority in Palestine.

I'm as happy as the next man to slag off the UN, but let's be fair! As bad as it might be, the UN has never legislated for the ethnic compositions of states - particularly when to make an ethnic Jewish state, you 'needed' mass ethnic cleansing in 1948.

Anyway, good to see that Israelis are paying some attention to UN resolutions. Let's hear it for resolution 194 - callingfor the return of Palestinian refugees.

Also congratulations to all who made Saturday a success - one of many demonstrations around the world to call for the end to the siege of Gaza.

David L has fallen into his own propaganda ambush. Israel, British Palestine west of the Jordan, and the putative Arab State IN western Palestine that never arrives for wanting to gobble Israel, are not congruent. However dearly David L likes to write as much to confuse the issue to his advantage, he only has confused himself.
Resolution 181 - the partition resolution of 1947 proposed a majority Jewish state; a majority Arab [Moslem] state and actually mapped proposed borders.
Ever since, all UN resolutions on the dispute of the Arabs with Israel assume the premises that Israel is, and is entitled to be a Jewish majority state according to the usual rules of self-determination. The fact that there is an Arab minority in Israel is no more a contradiction to the majority's Jewish self-determination of Israel, than the Catholic majority of Ireland despite some Moslems, Protestants - and even some Jews.
Meanwhile the history of the failure of an Arab state in Palestine to stand up is a matter of Palestine Arab fatuity, Jordanian and Egyptian occupation, and the failure of Palestine Arabs to write off their losses and talk to Israel as an equal that has rights to self-determination and independence - as much as has Ireland, India, USA....
As long as the PLO and Hamas charters, Iran and various others willing to use violence call for Israel's disappearance the war will go on.
The last occasion this was proved in public by an Arab dropping his political pants was in the week of Annapolis when M. Abbas and Nabi Sha'ath and colleagues said full face to camera, the Palestinians will never recognise Israel as a Jewish state, nor as a state of the Jewish people. This is as silly as saying Ireland, or the USA, has no right to be independent of the UK. Worse it is a mistake because to wage war and break the social rules is to invite a similar response - as has happened.
In fact Abu Mazen / Abbas has just saved everybody a lot of hypocrisy - not in the least himself by breaking off the Annapolis round of talks - which were enforced by the haplessly out of depth Bush Jnr. Meanwhile 194 of Dec 48 only speaks of, "refugees willing to live in peace with their neighbours," so it falls flat since the Arabs do not live in peace with Jewish neighbours, not even with their Arab neighbours qv Lebanon, Iraq, Algeria, Black September, Darfur, Yemen, Morocco ....
