Destruction of Trees in Dublin

category dublin | environment | news report author Wednesday November 21, 2007 20:55author by K. Ryan Report this post to the editors

Phoenix Park Trees Destruction

This week saw the beginning of a plan to remove the trees in front of St. Marys Hospital Phoenix Park.

While visiting my elderly mother there on Wednesday, she asked me what was all the noise about with the chainsaws. I enquired and was informed that the trees are being removed so that the hospital can be seen from the park gate. This has been approved by the Office of Public Works, who are responsible for the park.
With so much development in Dublin destroying green areas, I would have hoped that the Phoenix Park was a refuge from such development. It is also shocking that this plan ignores the fact that the elderly patients, confined to spend their final days in that hospital might prefer to look out the window at trees and nature, instead of cars and roads.

If the above report is correct, this is pure fucking madness. To see the Hospital from the gate? How much is this costing? And there's a budget squeeze and a recruitment embargo on the Hospital itself?!

Some years ago St. Mary's Hospital terminated the cleaning contractor with unionised staff - the new contractor (currently getting new contracts in other hospitals, incidentally) used non-union labour. Oh! the savings were worth it - helped to clear the view and fell the trees.
