The NHS is often said by politicians to be the 'envy of the world'. But after a 48-hour odyssey through A&E to get an urgent scan for suspected appendicitis, Shane McEvoy is convinced nobody anywhere is envying us.

The Covid Inquiry has allowed itself to degenerate into a cudgel to flog the Tory government of Boris Johnson. But an inquiry that instantiates a lie is worse than no inquiry at all, says Will Adie.

As he entered Downing Street, Keir Starmer told us he would "tread more lightly" on our lives. In 18 months Labour has gone from merely lying to bullshitting, losing all attachment to reality, says Sean Walsh.

After The Election: Time To Build A Real Political Alternative

People Before Profit Announces Details of Launch In Dublin Central

On Thursday, November 1, People Before Profit (PBP) will hold a public meeting to launch the new Dublin Central Branch of PBP. Election candidates Richard Boyd Barrett and Councillor Joan Collins will address the meeting.

Richard Boyd Barrett, who was almost elected in the Dun Laoghaire constituency, called on all those who want a real alternative in Dublin Central to attend the meeting:

“Following the General Election there has never been a greater need for a real alternative to the established political parties. The entry of the Greens into government, betraying all those who voted for them, and the willingness of Sinn Fein to ditch their polices to make themselves fit for government means that those who want real change in Irish society need to look elsewhere.”

Councillor Collins, who was a candidate in Dublin South Central, said

“Ireland has experienced unprecedented growth and prosperity during the past 15 years.
Yet for most of us the Celtic Tiger has meant huge house price increases, bigger mortgages, a rise in stealth taxes such as bin charges, traffic chaos, growing inequality and a health service more likely to be found in a third world country than in one of the world’s richest.”

Eddie Conlon, one of the organiser of the meeting and a long time political and trade union activists, said

“All those who want real change need to work together to build a real alternative
All the main ‘opposition’ parties broadly accept privatisation – and prefer to keep decision-making, involvement and empowerment limited to an elite few. There has never been a better time for a new political alliance to bring together people from campaigns and movements opposing government policies to give expression to the increasing discontent in the country. This important meeting represents an opportunity for all those on the left to discuss the outcome of the election and the possibilities for building a New Left.”
