Belfast Solidarity event with Burmese people

category antrim | miscellaneous | event notice author Friday October 05, 2007 12:43author by Lawrence McBride - Trócaireauthor email lmcbride at trocaire dot ieauthor phone 02890 808030 Report this post to the editors

Sat 6th October 1pm Queen's Bridge, Belfast

Urgent call to public, campaigners and activists to join solidarity event in line with international day of action on burma

This Saturday 6th October Trócaire, with support from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Amnesty International and NICVA, is calling on the public and all organisations and individuals concerned with the plight of the Burmese people to join them in a solidarity event at Queen’s Bridge, Belfast (beside Beacon of Hope sculpture, Thanksgiving Square at Laganside) at 1pm.

The event is scheduled as part of an international day of solidarity and will mirror other such gatherings in the UK and around the world where Monks or other religious and community leaders will scatter petals from a bridge into a river (the bridge is to symbolise the desire for reconciliation, the petals the lives of the Burmese people currently at risk).

Our messages:
The people of the world stand with the people of Burma
The International Community/ the UK and Irish governments must do more/keep the pressure on until the military crackdown ends
and all political prisoners are released

The event will serve as a photo-op for local media and will be addressed briefly by speakers with experience of work in Burma and up to date developments on the ground. Attendees will be invited to wear red clothing or a red arm / wrist / head band in an additional gesture of solidarity.

Invitation to attend will be circulated to political parties, religious leaders, community leaders and relevant local figures. Please circulate to your networks and supporters and add to e-bulletins.
