Iran's Fishermen Not Covered By Labour Law

category international | worker & community struggles and protests | other press author Thursday August 16, 2007 20:55author by Persian Report this post to the editors

Recent ratifications by the International Labour Organization (ILO) based on which fishermen should be covered by the law.
The ratifications will become mandatory in Iran after the Majlis approves them. Fishermen will then be protected like all other workers in Iran. according to a recent article in Iran Daily.

Despite earning their living from a hazardous and risk-prone job, fishermen are not covered by Labour Law, according to Mohammad Mojabi. ..therefore, he pointed out, they do not benefit from the privileges of the law.
He cited recent ratifications by the International Labour Organization (ILO) based on which fishermen should be covered by the law.
The official explained that although government and worker delegates from Iran attended the gathering, ILO ratifications are not yet obligatory for the country.
The ratifications will become mandatory after the Majlis approves them, he stressed.

The 96th annual ILO conference which concluded on June 15 adopted a comprehensive new set of labour standards for the fishing industry.
The new standards contain provisions designed to ensure that workers in the fishing sector have improved occupational safety and health and medical care at sea; that sick or injured fishers receive care ashore; receive sufficient rest for their health and safety; have the protection of a work agreement; and have the same social security protection as other workers.
