Here's some extracts:
The problem of Galway’s serious water contamination arose months ago. The fact that people have been falling sick in every neighbourhood since Christmas with vomiting, drastic weight loss, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea that lasted for weeks or was re-occurring, and was spreading from person to person, did not become an issue until cases began requiring hospitalisation.
Amazingly, the biggest noise began to be made when businesses were alerted that this could affect profits in the service and tourist industry.
The Galway City Manager and city council management team have shown the utmost contempt for the people of Galway throughout the crisis.
Their behaviour beggars’ belief at a time when over 180 people have been hospitalised as a result of infection from contaminated water, and Galway City faces one of the most serious crisis in its history.
AND
All in all, people lack confidence in their safety, in how the crisis is being handled, and the less well off have the added financial worries too. On top of this we are having to pay for any short term solutions (such as subsidising private bottled water companies for their BOGOF) that the city council is making out of our annual budget. Hence, come November when there is a huge deficit in the budget, Galway citizens will be penalised again by having funding slashed, probably from essential public services. You can bet the poorest in society will be the hardest hit. The government should be giving us emergency money to deal with this emergency situation.
