Limerick says: Refine the Gas at Sea!

category limerick | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday October 07, 2006 00:06author by Cian - SY & SPauthor email ComradeCian at eircom dot netauthor address Limerickauthor phone 085-7077919 Report this post to the editors

There have been a series of activities in Limerick in solidarity with the people of Rossport

I just thought it was about time that I mentioned that Limerick has also seen people take to the streets recently campaigning in solidarity with those in Rossport.

Limerick Socialist Youth and Socialist Party have been campaigning around the issue of the dangerous pipeline being inforced on the community of Rossport.

Last Saturday, this tuesday and thursday and again tomorrow, members of Socialist Youth have distributed leaflets and collected petitions, demanding the Corrib Gas be refined at sea and arguing that Shell and their counterparts can't be trusted with the irish peoples natural resources.

Tommorrow, again, we will take to the streets of limerick city centre doing the same. We are also looking into a public meeting and pickets at Shell stations, unfortunately I don't know of any well placed ones to picket but im keeping my eyes open.

We will also be contacting people in the UL Envioronmental Socety for some co-operation on this. Also, we have sent people up to Rossport protesting.

If anyone on here is from Limerick and would like to help out in campaigning then contact me. Limerick could benifit with more people campaigning!

Thanks,
Cian

Fantastic news from Limerick. The country is coming alive with calls for justice.

Please keep up the struggle wherever you are, we will continue to fight the bullying tactics of the state here in Mayo, and vow to increase the pressure.

The knowledge that people out there are willing to give of their time because of our struggle makes it easier to rise out of bed well before the dawn and defy the oppression forced on us by corporate greed and government collusion... and all before breakfast!

.

"We do not seek conflict, we know the strength of the forces arrayed against us. Know that because of them we can only use peaceful means, but we are determined that justice will be done!"

The primary concern of the people in Rossport and its surrounds and which they are struggling for at this time is the right to health and safety. They are exercising the right to protest in pursuit of the primary right of health and safety. The right to work has to be subordinate to this right to life. This needs to be held primary in acts of support. A refinery by its name expells poisons into soil, water and air . Fire is a constant fear. Animals and plants are the sustainers of life itself. The issues of gas ownership and compulsory aquisiotion orders are critical too. Primary at this moment is the impact of the refinery on the health and safety of the 200 pople we see protest. With their extended families such as children, elderly parents and relatives this 200 beecomes 2000 in reality. Let us keep in mind the primary concern for healh and life. Our support is deeply appreciated by an enduring people.
