Car Free Day Critical Mass Dublin!

category national | environment | event notice author Thursday September 14, 2006 19:01author by Starstruckauthor email cormboy at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Calling all cyclists, skateboarders, rollerbladers, pedestrians and anything without an engine!

Critical Mass to celebrate alternatives to the Automobile

Global Car-free day is a victorious day of actions on four continents reclaiming our streets and our lives from the automobile.
The Car Free Day festival’s intention is to raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of sustainable living and sustainable transport, by leaving the car behind. The event is a fun day out where visitors and the local community can enjoy Dublin City Centre as a traffic-free urban space.

--Poster--

On yer bike-yer feet-yer rollerblades-or whatever else you can come up with!

Why should I take part?
You can avoid stressful traffic jams
Many of us know all too well the frustration of traffic jams. By using an alternative mode of transport to do your daily commute, you can take a break from sitting in traffic.

Help break the dependence on oil
Choosing alternatives to the motor vehicle can help break our relentless dependence on oil that gives the MNCs such power over our daily lives, our governments and our environment.
Imperialist bloody wars are being waged in the name of oil-start doing something to break the dependence!

It's good for your health
It's hard to find time for exercise in our busy lives. By walking or cycling instead of driving you are getting good exercise as well

It's good for the environment
As well as polluting the air, car emissions are a significant contributor of greenhouse gasses (CO2) which cause climate change. Climate change is an issue that we can no longer afford to ignore. Reducing the amount of car journeys you take will make a valuable contribution to the environment.

So spread the word!

Anyone interested in promoting the event, flyering bikes, putting up posters or generally doing stuff-there'll be a pdf of the Bike flyer going up next week and the poster above, otherwise contact the email below..

Yup great ride. If it wasn't for this humble effort the day would have passed with just more gridlock and no challenge. The Ahern Government attempts to follow through on its commitments to car free day were minimal. As minimal as their attempts to address public transport, cycling safety etc.

A bonus was finishing at the new social centre. And a bunch of folks introduced to the space for the first time. We had quick circle and short reports from orgnaisers of the car free day effort, further NVDA planned to dmilitarise Shannon Airport, Revolt video, activism against the deportations earlier in the week, the Killer Coke action planned for the Coke sponsored Compromise Games coming up wit hte aussies. And a longer hang out.

Hi,
Have any plans been put in place yet for World Car Free Day 2008 in Dublin, Galway, Cork etc? I have started an online facebook community group in support on introducing a bicycle rental scheme to Dublin (search under Ireland network for more details). I'd like to let the group know of any future plans asap so they can get their skates/bicycles on,

Thanks,

Bikerider
