BP Oil Spill in Prudhoe Bay

category international | environment | other press author Sunday August 13, 2006 23:01author by Brian Mac Grath - Tara Foundationauthor email tarafoundation at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

March 2006 Oil Spill in Alaska

Recent reports, indicating a huge oil spill into the Alaskan Prudhoe Bay in March 2006, and the recent shut-down of production, highlight the dangers of allowing transnational energy corporations access to pristine areas such as Alaska or Corrib.

It has emerged that a large oil spill has taken place in Alaska's Prudhoe Bay. The leak is described as being approximately 1.2 million litres, covering around 200 miles of tundra. BP is facing a criminal enquiry as a result of the accident, which follows a fire and 15 deaths at its Texas facility, and the collapse of a rig in the Gulf of Mexico. One of the factors being investigated is the poor condition of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline itself, constructed in the 1970s, and believed to be in poor condition in sections. The recent shutdown of the Prudhoe Bay facility is alleged by some to be a device to push oil prices beyond their already record levels.

These events indicate that oil corporations such as BP, Shell and Exxon-Mobil operate
without reference to environmental laws and standards. Alaska today is Corrib and the entire West Coast of Ireland in the future.
