Spoiling your Holidays

category international | racism & migration related issues | news report author Tuesday August 08, 2006 11:52author by iosaf Report this post to the editors

a reminder of human misery & now the possibilty of adjusting Shengen.

The second week of August is the peak vacation week for citizens of the EU. Over 200 million EU citizens are not presently at their usual workplace or abode. Many (but not all) choose sunny destinations with the Mediterranean coast and the various EU archipelagoes enduring in popularity. Of course, not all EU citizens enjoy the fun, the month of August annually sees the most lay-offs and timed bankruptcies in continental Europe, whilst both law firms and trade unions are temporarily unavailable to help or counsel the "shafted workers". August and summer also see precarity peak, there is undoubtedly much employment available in tourist sectors but the pay is low and security non-existent. August also sees the influx of African migrants peak.

A short article on "spoiling your holidays".
float. sting. eat. if over-fishing and climate change continue the dominant marine life form in 50 years will be the jellyfish.
float. sting. eat. if over-fishing and climate change continue the dominant marine life form in 50 years will be the jellyfish.

___________________________________________________

Every year I attempt to bring readers' attention to the tide of migrants who motivated by a combination of true economic desperation in their home states of "sub-Saharan" Africa and the allure of western culture's nonstop advertising of "how good our lifestyle is" attempt to make the crossings into the EU. Crossings which occur at the border enclaves of Melilla, Ceuta, or the stretches of sea and ocean between northern africa and Spain, Malta, Greece and Italy or the visible coastlines of the archipelago of the Canary islands from Western Sahara.

Last year the onslaught brought attention as weekly thousands of poor Africans attempted to enter the EU, attention which in turn brought public indignation, government discussion :-

http://indymedia.ie/article/72231
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=71750

Resulting from the "humanitarian disaster" at the borders of southern Europe last summer & the scandalous abandonment of africans in the desert by the Moroccan authorities, certain states of the EU agreed to create a multi-state task force of naval and coastal guard vessels to patrol the routes of human traffic, migration and desperation & also to notch up the amount of accords with our southern Mediterranean neighbours on the northern African coast.

The figures this year are already considerably higher than last year.
Some indications are that the number of Africans attempting to enter the EU has doubled.

Spain as always is meeting with Morocco to discuss repatriation, this is an old theme which I have explored at length before. http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=69199 But now new elements merit reporting. The new Prodi government of Italy is discussing expanding the current mission of the inter-state naval force which now intercepts migrants in EU waters to patrolling the national waters of Libya and Tunisia on behalf of those states.
In short - to stop the rafts and boats before they enter international or European waters. Spain has already achieved such an extraordinary right of securing another states' sovreignty which was once deemed "establishing a protectorate", having being given permission to patrol the national waters of Mauritania on the western coast of Africa whence many sub-Saharan africans begin their odyssey. It is noteworthy that this agreement was made with the a regime which came to power in a coup d'etat last summer (c/f http://www.indymedia.ie/article/71288 )

But now the item I'd like to draw attention to is the proposals by various government and establishment figures in Italy, Malta, Spain and Greece to redraw Shengen.

On the Spanish front, this would mean adjusting the status of the Canary islands and possibly the already fortified enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla so that once arrived there, no migrant would have automatic right to carry on to mainland Europe. On the Italian front the suggestion is to remove the island of Pantelleria which is equidistant from Tunisia and Sicily as well as the island of Lampedusa which is very close to northern Africa from Shengen. Indeed some are already arguing that Malta itself ought also impose travel restrictions. The other "popular destination" of course is the island of Cyprus, which this year is not proving as popular for "illegal" migrants on account of the Israeli sea blockade on Lebanon whence normally migrant workers of the Levant region (Syria, southern Turkey, Lebanon itself and even Jordan) enter the EU. The Cypriots though are playing host to over 50,000 refugees from the Israeli war on Lebanon.

I realise that this might bore some Irish readers, who along with the Luxembourgish enjoy the most foreign holidays of any EU citizen.
Therefore with that in mind, I will lastly squeeze into some factiods and titbits on the jellyfish.

It all started and I would say finished about 400 million years ago.

A multi-celular lifeform came into existence in the post-primordial soup, evolved some tentacles brimming with poison, and then stopped. That means the lifeform went no further in evolving.
It could float, it could sting, it could reproduce being a dioceous creature it didn't even need to make up its mind on what sex it was. Indeed, it can't even have been thought to have evolved a brain so the question of it making its mind up is rather lame. Just like you, if you get stung by one. & the shocking factoid for today is this :-

every 15 minutes a EU citizen gets stung by a jellyfish

There are a plethora of reasons for the plentitude of jellyfish in both the Mediterranean and Atlantic in recent years. Perhaps the most scintilating are :-
* the rise in global temperatures commonly termed "global warming" (for the technically minded) has increased salinity favouring the reproductive cycle of jellyfish as well as their ability to float.

* they have no natural predators.

* quite right!!!

400,000,000 years of existence, no brain, eyes, or even sense of direction yet no other creature has evolved which counts jellyfish in its food chain.

Your claim that the jellyfish has no predators is incorrect. Jellyfish are a very important part of the marine food web. Jellyfish are carnivorous, feeding mostly on a variety of zooplankton, comb jellies and occasionally other jellyfish. Larger species, however, are capable of capturing and devouring large crustaceans and other marine organisms. Jellyfish themselves are preyed upon by spadefish, sunfish, loggerhead turtles and other marine organisms. One species, the mushroom jelly, is even considered a delicacy by humans. Both fresh and pickled mushroom jellyfish are consumed in large quantities in China and Japan.

Thank you faithful readers who it appears still remember me after my holiday period.

I must admit the idea that the jellyfish had escaped the foodchain has troubled me all day along with the assertion that a EU citizen gets stung every 15 minutes. Not being a scientist but rather a classicist, I remembered about 2pm (barcelona time) that Pliny the elder wrote with delight of eating the flourescent jellyfish aqua vitoria which was all the rage during his lifetime. No roman dinner party was complete without munching a bit of glow in the dark jellyfish and then asking the slaves to put out the lights so that everyone could marvel at each others' lips.
The gene which caused such flouresence was the first to be indentified of any genome, and was in fact inserted into another living organism for the first time succesfully in 1985. The scientist who did it had good reason : if the flourescent gene had been transplanted from the jellyfish to a worm... the worm would glow in the dark....& it did.
As of 2004 there are over 600 patents on applications of this gene technology ranging from useful medical applications to highlight cancer or tumor cells to the rather more frivilous "glow in the dark christmas or hannukah tree".

After remembering that, I went all "Raul Castro" like & almost autistically tried to work out is a EU citizen stung by a jellyfish every 15 minutes of every day? or just during normal bathing hours? (leaving the refreshing and dare say sexy skinny dip at midnight out of the equation). It begs questions of any developed mind....
How many bathers are likely to receive multiple stings? I first got stung by a jellyfish in Sardinia in 1998 and really had no idea what had bitten me ( it felt like a bite ) and was quite relieved it happened in shallow water because numbness and cramp as well as shock kicked into my puny little body rather quickly.

Every day hundreds of poor people who can't afford holidays try to come to Europe. Every week at least a dozen are found dead on our beaches. We have no idea how many go unaccounted for into the food chain of highly evolved marine carnivores. They really are poor people. A pensioner in Cuba gets 48€ a year in cash and food benefits which include 6kg of rice a month. The poor people who want to work in Europe only get 3kg of rice if the UN declares their country a humanitarian disaster zone and someone can secure the rice gets to their village.... & then they have to share it with all their neighbours.

our "prosperity" is based on systematic exploitation of fellow man. perhaps thats why dead africans on the beach goto heaven and we get skin cancer, stung by jellyfish, & talk about peace.

Spreading jellyfish all over the Mediterranean Sea.

author by iosafpublication date Wed Aug 09, 2006 09:00author address author phone Report this post to the editors

the BBC took up the jellyfih story at 17h45 GMT yesterday (faithful readers) which I think is about first gin & tonic Barcelona time, and cited marine biologists agreeing with me. Wonderful little piece full of factiods :-
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5256652.stm

Now moving on!

Every summer as we know European forests get torched. Last year Portugal suffered the most damage, and is sadly again "alight". As is the neighbouring region of Galicia in the Spanish state.
The Galician authorities issued figures yesterday for the rate of forest destruction which show from January to July alone three times the hectarage of last year has been burnt. To put this in perspective for the Irish reader who has never left home or even walked to Dublin (which I forever try to do) Last year Europe saw a forested area equivalent to the counties of Galway, three Louths and one Meath burnt. Or if you prefer a provincial comparison :- in 2005 a little short of half of occupied Ulster got burnt. & this year it looks like an area equivalent to Connaught will go.

Q : What causes this?
A : Quite simple really, hotter temperatures termed "global warming" not only increase salinity in our seas encouraging jellyfish but also mean less rain which in turn sees Africa become agriculturaly unproductive and its workers want to come here &.... our forests dry. Forests are mostly made of wood which is a highly flammable material and a little fire can soon spread unfought because of the difficulty of access.
Q : So how do we stop these fires?
A : Simple. We pray for rain & lobby the USA to cut its carbon fuel emissions.
Q: & what else can we do in the short term?
A : Well the states of the EU lend each other special fire fighting planes an helicopters. They almost always get them back afterwards except of course in the case of Portugal last year who after only five hours use of a Catalan plane ditched it into a forest. Needless to say the Portuguese didn't get offered a Catalan plane this year.
Q : Surely it's not only the USA / UK "brits" / Israel war machine who are to blame for these fires?
A : Well ok it isn't. A large amount of public service budgeting goes into educating locals and tourists alike that bringing your own ashtray whilst camping, not letting your kids play with butane or magnifying glasses and such like is an important factor in preserving Europe's forests. Indeed both Sardinian & Catalan regional governments have declared their forests "non-smoking" zones, which though is quite difficult to enforce. (One fire last week in Portugal was according to investigators caused by a cigarette butt thrown from car window). But Most fires are in fact caused deliberately !
This is by two types of individual :-
* arsonists and pyromaniacs. (who are now monitored during the dry season)
* land speculators. (who fantasise about building hotels on mountain tops once the trees are gone and people give up on beach holidays)
Q: Anything else to add to this "spoiling your holidays" series?
A: Yes the magic word "precarity". Astounding as it may seem most people who are engaged in fighting forest fires by throwing water, driving containers of water, beating brush, digging trenches to stop spread are not employed with proper contracts. In fact last year in Portugal, Spain, Catalonia, France and Italy attention and some small public outrage was brought to bear on the tardiness of payment for many of these workers. This led to the usual "governmental reactions" to tighten the sector and be "governmental like" (meaning writing rules - doing advertising - illegalising cigarette smoking in a forest). The region of Galicia as we know passed from being the personal feudom of 80+ year old Manuel Fraga in the recent times, and is now ruled by a coalition of socialists and nationalists. The Galician nationalists insisted that their langauge "Gallego" become an obligatory requirement for public service work. Quite normal one would think for working in the civil service, but this year hundreds of experienced firefighters have been turned away from working in the region for not having the equivalent of Junior Cert Galician. There are as I write over 100 fires active in the region and more than 25 of those are un-controlled.

It gets even worse!! - The most voracious jelly-fish consumers in the sea ie. various species of turtles are declining at an ever increasing rate due to our love affair with the plastic bag, and our unlovely habit of droppping them where-ever we like. Since they resemble jelly-fish when floating in the sea, turtles accidentally consume many leading to choking and certain death!!!. Already a number of species are near extinction thanx to this, another prime example of human ignorance/laziness when it come to the environment, having devastating consequences for an entire ecosystem!!!.

I doubt many people in Ireland / Eire have seen a dolmen in its natural habitat. This is because in golden days of yore we sold our trees to the brits to make ships out of & conquer the world.

I like Galicia and the Galicians which is why told you all about the Prestige and how Fraga ended.
The people behind Nunca Mais went back out on the street yesterday to protest the inefficacy of measures and strategies to stop forest fires. Be that in Galizia or as it logically works out the Rain forests and Andean selva regions. Zapatero turned up on telly in a Galician fire control centre, lots of monitors and computers and telephones to co-ordinate the helicopters and planes loaded with sea water dumping it on the burning forests. This is how states fight forest fires from Portugal through the Spanish state to Romania. Except in the Carpathians and Transylvania they don't have choppers or planes, and they're still awaiting their 2004 flood damage money.

Pretty soon I'm going to move this wonderful "comeback" article (((did faithful indymedia ireland readers and team-members know I almost went away on extended sabitical and betty ford type therapy???))) forward-

The story of our dry burning earth populated with near slaves demands another issue.

My last comment yesterday at around 5am Irish time hinted that I'd move on our reflection to air travel. As we all know a few hours later MI5 shut down Heathrow and lots of peoples' holidays were spoilt.
= air travel sucks. There is neither long term ecological or cultural sense in facilitating mass travel by airplane.

But I couldn't have told you that at 5am yesterday - coz MI5 might have changed their mind, & I'd seem idiotic. ( I thank the BBC europe desk for updating both stories on jellyfish linking to the Barcelona marine biologists institute and of course following the Forest fire story and underscoring that unhappy former workers in that precarity sector of fire fighting are most probably to blame) but my less faithful readers who worry about my use of "whence" / "hence" / "thence" and paratactic phrasing replete with cryptic analogy probably forget that I also told you all in an extended way that July 7th 2005 was going to be a "terror day" & followed that stunning analysis up with a fatwa on the 21st of July 2005. c/f http://www.indymedia.ie/article/70614 http://www.indymedia.ie/article/71025 http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=70500 (& all comments with attention to date) Terror days in the western civilised calender are really easy to spot. For one thing they are almost always a thursday unlike coup d'etats or dodgey electiosn which are almost always at the weekend.

For those of you who would like to be as uncanny as me & know when our "terror event" days are coming up - it's not really got much to do with "11".

It has much more to do with the Moon. That much said, every day is a terror day outside of our fortress.
Only terror brings people in overcrowded boats to our beaches. Only terror has been the product of anglo-saxon hegamony. & Western civilisation adores "terror" perhaps because ironically we never seem to get afraid of anything. & thats why I no longer worry to much about Al Q. I believe the bottom line of our geopolitical concern - the most important issue for the psychopaths and sociopaths who lead our governments and corporations to deal with is not :- terror, or reshaping the middle east, but actually climate change. It is the lowest common denominator behind all other problems.

One of the comments above by an Irish reader about the bogs burning in Roscommon being an act of God got me thinking about how I came to be an activist in the first place, of how I came to be in rts! in the 90's and go through all that paranoid mindcrushing marginalisation thereafter -
Years ago when I was living in England a group of colleagues at Oxford university decided to attend the Kyoto conference. That dismal attempt to co-ordinate global action at both the state and corporative level to combat global warming. The bottom line which is terraforming our planet. The single most important issue which exacerbates poverty, provokes migration, lays waste to agricultural development and brings jellyfish to your beach. My pals in an idealistic way decided rather than flying to Kyoto they would travel by land - a longer and infinitely more ecological route. & so they set off much ahead of all the others to cross the Eurasian continent and when they hit Siberia they saw an awesome sight. For more than a decade then & still now : the peat reserves of Siberia have been burning under the earth. The smallest change in land temperature un-noticeable to a human was enough to cause spontaneous combustion. The earth above splits open in cracks which glow red and smoke pours out. It looks rather like hell. The images were so shocking to those who saw them A long time later when they came back that they pushed us out of our complacency & into planning street actions. We rented a little shop space in Camberwell London and put photos of all the people they had encountered on their way to Kyoto in jars. & we invited the public to come along and gawk and told them about our plans to carnival against capitalism & change public opinion and basically make the world a better place to live in. For a few years the agenda of the "shadowy anarchists" merited the attention of the dark castles of spooks and much media manipulation. Attention neither I nor anyone of the group enjoyed. But at the same time in more "moderate" circles the agenda of "climate change" and "global poverty" began to move into the wish list of the centre. Slwoly we found ourselves dropping off the "monitored potential terrorist" lists because Al Q. had been invented.

& what an astounding concept Al Q proved to be with its obsession with pursuing a simplified US plot line complete with characters and modus operandi and smersh like TV addresses.

Terror is why we build walls around Mexico, Israel, Morocco, and why indeed the Israeli war thought it neccesary to push the jellyfish eating green turtle closer to extinction.

Terror though is a lie.

Al Q may not be so unsophisticated that in place of simply phoning up the local press and giving a timed warning like armed groups of old - it works to a fixed lunar calendar. It simply makes no sense. So if nothing else dear reader forget about "eleven".

I'd prefer if we all worried about ending the Car and travelling by Air less. We must change our energy.
We must undermine the sector of Western civilisation the military industrial arm oil complex by exposing every one of its misdeeds, and practically choosing other options. If not -----

our beaches will be jellfish & our navies will start sinking boats of Africans in 5 years instead of just giving them blankets and asking them to go home.

this june and july approximately 15,000 migrants were processed in theCanary islands and approximately 10,000 were processed at the Italian island of Lampedusa. these are the frontier islands currently enjoying joint EU naval protection. In the rest of the EU outsideofthe mediterranean the state that boasts the most internet migrants is Hungary. We currently hold just short of half a million africans and asians in our EU _dont past go_ internment system. This undoubtedly will make us friends.

Ghadaffi will accept Italian and EU supervision of Libyan waters to stop migrants before they reach international waters of EU waters if and only if the EU subsidises a new motorway.

I want to remind everyone that the incoming migrant figures are at their highest whilst the expulsion figures are hovering at average. This means thousands more Africans are being lost in a system of repatriation. In practise this means they are suffering internment, spending ever longer times in detention before their country of origin will take them back. Long after they get on telly with their insulation silver blanket and red cross tents or in the arms of a EU migrant naval force coast guard or at the very least a kind tourist..... they are still in prison........after comitting no crime other than attempting to seek work.

i would also like to remind readers that even though this summer saw heightened terror threats on flights in Europe with several security alerts on both transatlantic and transmeditteranean flights recorded, and unprecedented disruption of air travel, associated with the highest figures on lost or stolen luggage ever....

less EU tourists have died abroad this year.

In the period august 2005 to august 2006, I counted very few Irish deaths abroad. 2005 saw an Irish teenage tourist die in a Kurdish terrorist suicide bombing in western Turkey, and several Irish tourists survive bombings in Egypt. 4 prominent members of Irish criminal networks engaged in narcotraffic died abroad. 2 were killed, one committed suicide and one got beaten to death by her loving boyfriend in their spanish villa. Beyond that less than ten Irish tourists enjoyed natural deaths due to heat attacks or ignored brain tumors or dodgey food.

last littlew factiod to delight the usual readers of indymedia who are no doubt enjoying our normal transmission again...... 34% of UN peace keeping soldiers are European. Ireland sends 650 troops abroad to make everything better. Well behind the largest donor of young men and women, Germany who sends almost 7000. second is the UK who sends 2000 less troops than it keeps in Iraq to peace missions, then france, spain, italy down the list to the islands of Malta and Cyprus who send 2 soldiers each to maintain peace on UN missions.

Or if they did it was sort of home. As usual the ngo doctors without borders found a few hundred more dumped in the desert without water or food because no African contintental state wanted to take them in.
Interestingly enough 30,000 people were stopped at the Catalan Pyrennes town of Jonglers which acts as the "non existent" border with the rest of the EU. They were Romanian and Bulgarian migrants who crossed all of the EU to "not get into" Spain.

Sinead Finn is not a person most of you know. But she's one of the people with great responsibility for holidays in one of the few corporation & big companies bad & hypocritical enough to be on my permanent list.

She's the director of European marketing for Ryanair. Her boss the unacceptable face of capitalism Mr O'leary has just recovered from laughing his way to the bank. He sued Heathrow for spoling his customers holidays with their terror threats. (read it all above it happened duing your holidays). He said (& I qoute) "we should keep Britain flying and protest this disruption". It wasn't the first bout of disruption Ryanair had got. Back for the holiday season peak (end july stat august) the workers of spanish airline Iberia walked out of and off of their usual positions at Barcelona's "Prat" airport. A few thousand of them from baggage handlers to cabin staff to the people who tell you not to pack liquids occupied the landing lanes of a very very busy airport. Mr O' leary sued.

Sinead Finn advertised to the people of Barcelona the day before yesterday that if they arrived to the central square with a plackard upon which was a slogan abusing the airline Iberia (& by references it's workers, who are still in strike like action & precarity) they would get :-
"a free flight for two people".

I need not surprise ye by telling you Ryanair didn't give me free flights. It took a short while before the riot started. Agents of Barcelona's police as well as the national police of Catalonia escorted Sinead Finn away from the lynch mob as she repeated (in english) too many people. too many people.

The establishment (including me) of this little mountain nation were up in arms by tea time. Over 1000 lawsuits have started. Less than 300 people received a bit of paper offering them "a flight but including supplementals (for wheelchair) (luggage) & full taxes from airports which are 20€ train journey away". To top it off the period on the Ryanair receipt was dated "September 2006 to May 2006".

Today Ryanair facing editorials relling at their cheek, criminal advertising, aggressive marketing & sheer repellent 24% share of precarity pollution travel -

offered everyone who said they were in Placa Catalunya yesterday such a ticket. = Yes you were there. I saw you. I have receipts from the kiosk on the corner. this is the email address gratis@ryanair.com & this being Barcelona a place where people like protesting especially when it's less than a week back from holiday season.... 200 people today assembled to protest Ryanair's fraudulent advertising, and some carried "support Iberia" plackards. Parliamentary questions have indeed been asked and more than 70 articles return on a google search.

Sineid Finn has now this evening claimed she has 4 million tickets to give away (before May 30th _2006_?) to celebrate the 4 million people they moved during the month of August. Which proved to the be safest month for European tourists since the war on terror began.

That's one for all of you.
What will we talk about?
17,500 africans in boats?
30,000 romanian & bulgarians on buses?

The moment Ryanair started a riot in Barcelona.
