Imigration Control Platform Plan Recruitment Drive

category dublin | racism & migration related issues | news report author Tuesday August 01, 2006 12:16author by Marcas MacCaoimhín Report this post to the editors

Whither the left?

The Immigration Control Platform (ICP) are set to try and crawl out of the woodwork once again. It has been brought to the attention of this activist that Aine Ní Choinaill's bid to halt ethnic and cultural diversity in the name of a "homogonous nation" is to begin a recruitment drive in Dublin City centre.

The ICP has been meeting recently in a pub on Caple Street and is set to launch a recruitment drive at Stalls outside the GPO. A leaflet asking people if they "Feel like foreigners in (their) own country" is to be distributed. The leaflet will be aimed at recruiting fifteen to forty year olds and to see if their is any support for the ICP position among the general public. A member of the group stated that the ICP wishes to voice their opinions "without being called racists". He went on to say that he is "sick of walking down the street and hearing nothing but foreign voices."
Obviously as uncertainty in the economy increases and people are forced to accept lower wages to compete in the labour market with super exploited migrant workers, there will be more of a niche for groups like the ICP. The question must now be posed to those on the left of how the threat of racism, both thinly veiled and open, will be countered. It must also be put to the trade union movement that ultimately the best way to halt tensions between Irish workers and immigrants is to fight the "race to the bottom". A unionisation drive among migrant workers should lead to resistance of "the race to the bottom" and unite Irish and Immigrant workers.

Every political party in Ireland either right, left or centre welcomes immigrants and foreign workers into Ireland. While the majority of people support our representative in Dail Eireann such as Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour, The Green Party, Sinn Fein and Independents there will never be a place for the ICP.
These bizarre people are a fringe of a fringe of a fringe of a fringe.
They are simply an incoherent comical irrelevance.
My advice to you, ignore them and get on with your life.

I alluded to the fact that harder times will see people looking for easy answers. Immigrants will become scapegoats and lead to the possibility of support for racist groups. They may be small now but the I'm sure the Nazi Party seemed like a comical Irrelevance in 1919. From little acorns, big trees grow. It is important to (to continue with the horticultural analogies) nip this in the bud before it has a chance to grow.

If the ICP are recruiting in Dublin then we should use the opportunity to infiltrate that organisation. They are a joke of an organisation and their members are mainly intellectually challenged racists, therfore they would be easily infiltrated and destroyed.

Right wing groups never seem to have a problem getting funding. And why? because they play exactly into the agenda of those in power. There is a very long history all around the world of right wing and racists groups been funded, covertly promoted and covertly controlled by various state security agencies.

This is all the more reason that they should be nipped in the bud.

“Obviously as uncertainty in the economy increases and people are forced to accept lower wages to compete in the labour market with super exploited migrant workers”

Bullshit!

People are coming to this country for the opportunities it offers and out of choice.

There are plenty of jobs here and while life on an unskilled minimum wage can be difficult, a great number of foreigners coming to these shores are skilled professionals, who win jobs over Irish workers because of their competency and skill and NOT their willingness to be paid less.

You sir, are ignorant of the facts and mildly racist with the assumption that we do not have good education and are open to exploitation. Are you pity for us because we are not Irish? That is discrimination based on race!

You are saying there is no Race to the bottom? You are saying that there are not large numbers of migrant workers being super exploited? You are living in lala land.

"You sir, are ignorant of the facts and mildly racist with the assumption that we do not have good education and are open to exploitation. Are you pity for us because we are not Irish? That is discrimination based on race!"

There is no such assumption in my article. It is a fact that migrant labour is super exploited in this country. If you think otherwise then it is you who are ignorant of the facts. Gama and Irish Ferries are only two examples of many. I'd like you to retract your accusation of racism or I'd like it removed as it is a libelous accusation. I don't see how demanding that migrant workers get paid the same as Irish workers is racist. Do you?

Just look at the *One Nation* party in Australia, they got massive support and if you think people do not notice the massive influx of cheap workers from the former communist monster you are sadly mistaken, it is after all a part of the globalisation process that has been ongoing now for many years

give nato a few more years and they will have swallowed up more of the old soviet block, then the EU will absorb it, this will increase the flow, and the tension

at the moment unemployment is low, but once this creeps up watch the ranks swell with people

change is hard, and Ireland is no longer the homogenous state it once was, many people find that upsetting

it is a failure of the government to prepare its people, never the immigrants fault, but these people will of course twist the reality

Personally, i dont believe that racism is as rampant in Ireland as some claim.

Firstly, we have no cognent extreme right wing unit. For every public racist we have in Ireland, other countries have a racist group/ political party or NGO. With regard to the UK. For Aine Ni Chonaill, they have the BNP, for Justin Barrett they have the National Front, for Ted Neville they have The British Peoples Party, for Pat Talbot they have the Get Britain Back Alliance.

Anybody who watched ITV'S "Vote For Me" last year will remeber the jackass that was Rodney Hylton Potts. Former jailbird Potts, managed to gain public notoriety and infamy by expressing extreme right wing views itv. Hylton Potts proved victorious, and stood as a candidate in the 2005 General Election. He failed in the election miserably, but at the same time, he managed to fight off competition from people who were standing on noble sigle issues. Needless to say ITV wont be running the show again.

In France, Le Pen's racist National Front has been a more potent force in recent times. In 2002, he defeated Lionel Jospin (A Socialist) in the first round of presidential elections.

THis beggers the question about how racist Ireland really is. In both the UK and France, the media is forced to offer racist parties a platform. Racism inb the media has been very limited. When was the last time Ni Chonaill was on the TV. I remember her in the late 1990s and the early 2000s on the TV regularly. Nowadays Questions and Answers and The Late Late Show wont bother with her. Ditto Barrett whos reputation lies in tatters after his Nazi escapades were exposed.

On Sunday when reading my copy of the Sunday Tribune, i noticed a letter from Aine Ni Chonaill of the ICP. Again she was complaining about the level of Immigration in Ireland. This would suggest that the ICP are about to launch some kind of assault on the General Electon next year. However, Ni Chonaill is so dispised by the Irish public, that as long as she is in control of the ICP, they will never be anything more than a fringe group. Similar to certyain groups who are at the other end of the extreme, as some their ideas (such as completly open borders) are utopian and to an extent dangerous.

We need to understand that we need certain immigration controls. I dont think Ireland's immigration has gone out of control. We are in the best shape ever, and we can accomodat many immigrants. This includes many more. However, we cannot throw open our borders, and risk taking on the worlds problems.

Individual racism is a major problem. Lies about immigrants etc is scaremongering, and on the whole wrong. However, we dont face the same type of institutional racism that is prevalent in other countries. The ICP are the only major group, and many people believe that their membership has a grand total of five or six activists. Until I see a party with the words Freedom, Peoples, or National Demcratic, I will refuse to believe that racism is as big a problem as it is with other countries.

By the way, I do agree that many mindless individuals engage in racism and racist activities. And of course i condemn these people. All people deserve to live in private and public peace
