The Answer to War- Media/Lobby co-option of the Nuclear Issue.

category national | anti-capitalism | opinion/analysis author Thursday June 29, 2006 20:19author by Chris Murray - The Unmanageables Report this post to the editors

or Denis O Brien's Newstalk 106 takes on the issue of Nuclear Power in Ireland.

Professor Peter Mitchell of the UCD school of physics , provided
today a completetly risible excuse for the media -led campaign on
nuclear energy in this country. The campaign has been trundling on
at least since Feburary 16th of this year, though it gathered momentum on
June 1st with the press release from the Oireachtas Committee on
natural resources that the nuclear option is one that we should be examining.
According to Mitchell nuclear power generation in Ireland could
provide an answer to our offence at and opposition to war.

This could be achieved by buying the great powers weapons
that will no longer be in use, and burning them, "once ,twice
or three times". It is a capitalist solution to a capitalist problem.

It brings a whole new meaning to the idea of reduce, re-use and
re-cycle, doesn't it? The buying of depleted or unwanted plutonium from
hawk nations to re-use in Ireland as a source of energy.

On 16th Of feburary the SIB was launched, it is currently passing
through the committee stage in the houses of parliament.

'Core energy issues' are part of the remit of the legislation , which will
advance the issue of nuclear energy in the state.

On June first , the Oireachtas committee on natural resources
stated that the option of nuclear power had to be faced.

The OECD is supportive of a debate which is not emotive,
given that the issue of corruption and cronyism dominate
a government dedicated to advancing the wealth of the lobbies
by removing fundamental rights in relation to protest of the
community ,it is difficult to see how a mature and rational debate
on such a weighted issue can be carried out.

The discussion which occured on Newstalk 106 this evening
had two commentators, both pro-nuclear energy. It wasn't exactly
a rounded discussion.

BTW: Denis O Brien owns the biggest stake in newstalk 106. They are
going national soon, they started as an independent radio station.
(last seen, front row centre at Mr Haughey's funeral).

Part of independent media responsibility is to monitor the corporate
interests that drive the established media organisations.

The Department of the Marine and Natural Resources launched it's energy
policy on Sunday 1st October 2006, the same day as the consumer's ass.
demanded that the massive hike in gas be stopped and were denied.

The Dept of the Marine had Bertie there to underscore the media junket aspect
of the day, therby all the mainstream journalists attended to hear that no-
we will not have nuclear power in the next ten years, meanwhile the gas went up
enormously and loads of lovely photos were taken.

Costs of domestic gas are now at an all time high and people are beginning to
feel the pinch. Most of our power will be generated by wind over the next 20
years (its sustainable -you know, and Marine sold off the Gas rights and
criminalised the people of Erris today).

Meanwhile the O Brien Sponsored newly nationalised Newstalk 106 regularly
interviews professors, such as the one mentioned above to lobby for the
introduction of nuclear power into Ireland.

The Strategic Infrastructure Bill allows for the introduction of this energy
into the country and as we all know it provides for the divison of an Bord
Pleanala and a one-stop shop for the corporations to lobby and create
focus groups for the necessity of this energy source.

O Brien hit the headlines in the last two weeks because he gave up a substantial
number of his directorships (except Media) in advance of the Moriarity Tribunal
inquiries into ESAT. (He even gave up Digi-tech- his co-director is the Caymans is
PJ Mara) Both were last photographed together on June 16th at the funeral of the
late CJ Haughey- The day of the introduction to the Dail of the Strategic Infrastructure
Bill. This administration has said that nuclear energy will not therefore be introduced into
Ireland, but the media lobby ignored the cost of gas to the consumer and the impending
Garda encroachment on Rossport.
