Bikes are the cleanest ,healthiest and safest way of getting around the city streets but cycling around Dublin can be a nightmare!

Critical Mass is a mass coincidental bunch of cyclists on the city streets The point is to show everyone--commuters, pedestrians and residents that there is a better way to get around. Once people see how much fun cycling can be, and how much safer and more pleasant it makes their streets,we will see improved facilities for cyclists in the city something that will benefit everyone

We ride to show how much quieter, cleaner, and safer the streets of Dublin would be without so many cars. We want to show that bicycling is a fun and healthy way to get around the city.

Anyone can participate. A bike is handy but you can skate, rollerblade or even walk!Bring colour, music and energy too!
Come along!

Flyer and Poster pdf to follow for some DIY advertising!

Pathetic.
It really was.

Three bikes and three pedestrians showed up.

what happened to 30 or 40 people on a regular basis taking back the streets of dublin for a couple of hours a month?

i dont want to try to guilt on people.
i just cant figure out why people dont show up anymore.
it genuinely makes me sad, it used to be a really enjoyable and inspiring thing to be a part of but the last few rides have just been depressing.

maybe this starts a discussion and maybe people get involved again. maybe not.

Firstly Id have to take a certain amount of responsibility for the lack of publicity at least-unfortunately I got knocked off my bike by a bus last weekend and was outta action all last week as a result.
The answer as to why noones showing up anymore is unclear-it could be one of many things-lack of publicity, lack of interest in general, lack of a new formula,or maybe Critical Mass needs a new direction, like RTS..
With the poster ban (supposedly>>>) dropped I envisaged it to be easier to get posters up for the mass, obviously that didnt happenb this time.
It seems to be falling to one or two individuals to do the donkey work around advertising the mass, maybe a collective is needed or something...
The state of play is poor,Ill admit.

hi,

not sure if this is the right place to post this...
but i'm originally from san francisco (where CM is huge) and would love to get involved/help out here in dublin...judging from the turnout at last nights dublin city cycle, i think CM could gather quite a crowd here if people knew about it...
i'm a graphic/web designer, so maybe i can be of some use?

it was never an issue with design, it just needs people committed to flyering bikes each month and not just anarcho-spamming places like here and mailing lists

despite it supposedly being an organic happening, the 3 people who did most of the work for it arent involved any more and it has died off.

a few people i talked to as well who were just into cycling were pretty narked with DGN (dublin anti capitalist group that has since dissolved) essentially hijacking it as part of an anarchist weekend a couple of years back. i was surprised initially but i guess i see their feelings now, it wasnt right for any political group to claim it as their own or part of something they did, same way that people get pissed off when trots leech onto campaigns, this was the same thing happening, and since then its disappeared.

I just got an email saying Critical Mass is on this Friday 28th July at 6pm from the Gardens of Remembrance. Anyone coming?

anyone can use it the idea and it has always been political, whether you try to make it such or not.
If you want to spread the word on it use your networks to do so. The people DGN were completely open with what they were doing and have been part of CM.
