Garda Credit Union awash with dirty money

category national | crime and justice | news report author Monday May 22, 2006 22:25author by Liam Mullen - Freelance Journalist Report this post to the editors

Revenue sources have indicated that serious irregularities have come to light with member’s accounts showing irregular balances, that have mostly been lodged in Gardaí’s spouses and their children’s accounts. It is believed that a number of Gardaí have been privately reprimanded but the matter remains very hush-hush.

At a time when Justice Minister Michael McDowell has appointed Kathleen O’Toole to oversee changes within the Garda Síochána, and at a time when the force itself is under the spotlight with the Morris Tribunal, and recent high profile cases like Abbeylara, the news that dirty money has been lodged into member’s accounts will hardly engender public confidence in a force already rocked by a number of high profile disasters of late. The force has also come in for much criticism from government circles over its refusal to consider a reserve force.
One of the most successful credit unions in the country, the main Garda credit union can boast upwards of twenty eight thousand members, and has assets in excess of 353 million euros. It is not known how much dirty money was involved but the fact that a top-secret revenue probe was launched by the internal revenue investigation division suggests that millions of euro could be involved.

nothing surprise's me. people have a notion that a mainly by hollywood and the media. That a corrupt cop is the instrument of organized crime ie. like the mafia or some drug baron giving his lacky money for info.

A corrupt cop can be a fella on the take raiding premise's where large wads of drug money are they are the first to touch it temptation is ripe we live in a greedy world with banks owning are homes.
people are human.

who cares it's going in to draws for year's sometime trials fail.
i remember an issue ihn fitzgibbon st recently a garda station in the nth innercity dublin.
where 25000euro's went missing fro m a drug lock up.
the orignal drugs trial had failed. judge dismissed it.
State appealed ordered a new trail but evidence, ie.drug money was missing. big investigation still on going.

or fines, a big thing cops blakmailing people.

The ease with which every last file into the Dublin Monaghan bombings disappeared from the Department of Justice and Garda HQ simultaneously combined with the lack of arrests or even identification of the suspects involved in this highly criminal act would indicate the British are paying off garda members as well , and have been on a regular basis for decades .

what a load of horseshit, another case of put garda in a story and write what you like, come on if your a journalist outline your proof or show us u can write a story with a bit of back bone, i'd say your as much a journalist as I am, come off the hash.

Liam one of the differences and advantages of writing for the internet as opposed to papernews is that you can add links directly to the story to back up story. Which you may need to do.

I'd like to point out that I have nothing against the Gardai, per se, but that I am reporting on a matter that emanated from revenue sources.
One of the first rules within journalism is to protect your sources and keep them confidential, and that's the way I operate. If you don't like it - tough!

Protecting your sources doesn't mean write what you want and attribute it to a source. You still need evidence.

If you sent that horseshit into a newspaper, they would laugh at you. Regardless of your "sources" you still have to stand the story up somehow. You are talking about Revenue probes, "dirty money", gardai getting reprimanded. If there was much as a mouse's fart of truth in this, couldn't you at least show a little evidence, a little third party corroboration, at least something to stand it up.

It's a disaster......

Reader says
If you sent that horseshit into a newspaper, they would laugh at you...

Well yeah they would be very reluctant to publish a story that attacked the establishment or status quo but when it comes to things like immigrants, activists, protests they have no problem publishing unsubstantiated stories attribute to just sources or garda sources. Only yesterday the Evening Herald did this. Remember the MayDay stories: Anarchist to gas Dublin. That was attributed to "sources".

Yet when for example news was coming out about what was going on in Donegal they were very reluctant to run the stories even though there was plenty of evidence and we had the Morris tribunal. Likewise with the planning and corruption.

Nevertheless it would be interesting if we did indeed have more information about this story.

"Garda Credit Union awash with dirty money"

Awash? what figure? oh hang on you nail that later in the...ahem...article

"the news that dirty money has been lodged into member’s accounts will hardly engender public confidence"

What news? what dirty money? what are you talking about?

"It is not known how much dirty money was involved"

If any

"suggests that millions of euro could be involved"

Really? Does it? How do you make that one out?

You say you are freelance - have you ever actually been paid for an article? By anyone??

ehhhh? dear reader the story about drug's money in fitz st garda station, was a very public story in the media.
stolen from supposedly "oh sorry gaurds" i mean missing

would never of come to public attention only after the dpp appealed and the second trial judge wanted to know were the 25, 000 euros of drug money evidence was.

Gardia turned up in court looked at each other stuttering and mubling we cant find it.

what said the judge? "well we need more time your honour may be its missed place"ha

so dont nit pick dear reader there are corrupt cops on the take. and they have been in the mainstream me,
media cops knocking people down taking chases, peodahilia , remember john ryan veronica guerin decorated for bravery.

it seems that wants the corruption stay s with in its own ranks, its ok but if these cops expose it inadvertantly to the public domain there isolated and outcasted.

mafia like i say. have you not heard of morris tribunal
a lot of money changing hands up there. dont forget these lot carried their bad habits up from dublin thats were they were for the majority of their careers. suddenl;y the boredom of the quite donegal countryside corrupted them.

dont think so.

Wow, talk about building an innocuous report into a heavily slanted story filled with unsubstantiated references, innuendo and bigotry! Not surprised the journalist is 'freelance'! Or should that be 'journalist'...?
